Since everyone thinks we’re engaged, she can’t appear in public without a ring. I’ll have to ask her what her preferences are.
Chapter 5
Kate
“I’d like to take you to dinner. What do you say?” he says.
“Yes, of course, but are you sure? I’m not exactly dressed for an elegant dinner.”
“I thought we’d stop by your house to change into one of your new dresses. I made a reservation at a more secluded restaurant. I hope you like it.
“I’m relieved to hear that. I’m a little tired after work,” I say. Today is my last day at the office. We’ll leave New York tomorrow. My mom is ecstatic, and I didn’t want to upset her and tell her that my engagement is fake. My family and friends are all crazy happy with the news.
Alex comes upstairs with me to my apartment. I’m not ashamed of my little apartment, but since he lives in a palace, I expect him to say something negative about it, but instead he says it’s cozy and nice.
I like the reaction he has when he sees me in the dress he bought me. I like the way he looks at me. No man has ever looked at me with that sensual hunger before. When I’m ready, we finally head out. The restaurant is dimly lit and very elegant. I like it.
We’re led to an elegant table, and I feel like everyone is looking at us. A few of his security guards sit at a nearby table while some stay at the door.
“Kate, I’d like you to know that things won’t be easy for you. The press might dig up ugly things about your past. I just want to tell you I’m sorry about that, and I’m sure you’ll be well compensated for all of this.”
“Alex, I don’t want your money. I’m going to look at this as a free accommodation holiday. So, I’m going to ask you to show me your country. I don’t know much about it. I know you export diamonds and you have a lot of oil, which is not unusual for a Northern Europe country.
“Kate, I insist on paying you. You’re going to have to quit your job to do this.”
It’s my turn to laugh. “Alex, I wouldn’t give up my job for you or any other man. I’ve talked to my boss and explained the situation to him. He agreed to let me work from home. So, I’ll take my laptop and I’ll continue to work. I’ve already told you I don’t want your money, and I’m serious about it. But I’ll keep all the clothes you bought me, so we’re even. We just have to set an end date for this whole charade, since I was only able to take three months off from work. Darius has only agreed to let me work from home for three months, and I can’t afford to lose my job.”
Alex takes my hand, and I shudder when our fingers touch. Lost, we look into each other’s eyes until we’re interrupted by the waiter. After a dinner of fish, white wine, and a chocolate dessert, Alex takes me home.
The truth is that I’m a little nervous about how the meeting at the palace will go. He’s father is the king, after all.
Alex kisses me passionately at my door and I see the hope of being invited inside in his eyes. I have the impression that I’m playing with fire and that I may come home from Fairland with just a new wardrobe and a broken heart.
***
I’m left speechless by the beauty and elegance of the palace where Alex lives. I didn’t do any research before I came here, so everything is a surprise. Alex has promised me to show me his country, and I am very excited.
I’m even more shocked by the big diamond ring Alex gives me. It belonged to his grandmother, the former queen and I feel honored to be wearing it.
As promised, Alex takes me to visit a lot of places. I realize the immense love he has for his country from the pride in his voice when he talks to me about his country’s history. He showed me all his favorite places, and we’ve gotten to know each other better. Wherever we went, he was instantly recognized, and people welcomed him with open arms. And they welcomed me too.
I am a little frightened by the immensity of the palace and the crowd of servants and security. My room is actually a huge apartment with a luxurious bathroom and a big wardrobe, like you only see in the movies.
His mother is a very beautiful and elegant woman. The king is a sober man with salt and pepper hair and a straight nose. He was serious at dinner but polite.
The palace has a big garden, and I especially like the rose garden. Alex and I go for a walk in the garden every night. He kisses me behind the rose bushes, so the rose garden quickly becomes my favorite part of the grounds. I don’t know how much longer I can say no to him when we kiss goodbye in front of my door at night, when in fact my heart wants to say yes.
Tonight’s ball scares me. It’s the first official ball and the first time I’ll be formally introduced as Alex’s fiancée. Now that we’re going to a ball, things seem a little too real, and I think maybe we’ve gone too far with this charade.
I feel like I’m living in a fairytale wearing a gorgeous soft blue gown and diamond earrings and a necklace his mother loaned me from her big collection.
***
“Are you tired, Kate? You want to go and make out in the garden?” he asks like a naughty schoolboy, and I giggle.
“I don’t want to ruin my dress. And I drank too much champagne. Thank you, though. It was a lovely night, but I’m tired.”
He nods. “You are so beautiful, Kate. I’m happy you had such a great time.”
He kisses me goodnight in front of my door, and I can see how hard it is for him to walk away. Inside my room, I wonder why I continue this torture. Even if there is no future for us, we have a strong chemistry. I should just enjoy what he has to offer. Memories are all I’ll have in a few weeks when I go back to New York. They might as well be amazing memories.
He’s a prince, perfect and sexy, and he acts like he’s my real fiancé. Even his family has accepted me. I believed that they wouldn’t be very welcoming, but they are. It’s now or never. I’ve been a virgin long enough.
I softly knock on his door, and when he opens it, I can tell that he’s surprised to see me.
“Hi, Kate, do you need anything?” he asks as he takes off his watch and places it on the nightstand.
“Yes, I need you. What do you say, Alex?” I say and blush scarlet. I want him so badly, but now I’m a little nervous.
“Are you sure, Kate?” he asks, and I swallow hard, my chest pounding.
“Yes, Alex I’m very sure. Come here and I’ll show you just how sure I am.
The corners of his mouth turn up, and he walks slowly toward me. He presses his body against mine, and I can feel his erection against my belly.
He takes my hand and kisses every finger, and I moan loudly. Embarrassed, I bury my head in his shoulder.
He chuckles. “No, baby, don’t hide. I love it that you are so responsive.”
“You do?” I ask in a small voice.
“Very. But I want to take this slow, so we’ll start with the dress. I need to see you naked, baby. Don’t worry I’ll make it good for you,” he whispers in my ear.
“You’d better! You had a lot of practice,” I grumble, and he chuckles.
Truth be told, I’m terrified, but I really want to do this. I smile, relaxing under his gaze.
His lips are on mine when he touches my breast thorough the fabric of my dress. He growls, frustrated, and unzips my dress, helping me take it down. I love the deep breath he takes when he sees me naked and he lifts me up and takes me to his huge bed.
I have never been inside his bedroom before, but he really does have a bed fit for a king.
His shoes hit the floor loudly, followed by his pants and shirt. Naked, he’s breathtaking, every toned muscle tensing when he moves.
I inhale sharply when he climbs on top of me and hungrily captures my nipple with his mouth, suckling and licking it until my pussy is on fire.
He plants a kiss on my neck, and his fingers touch my clit, making me come with a scream. I can’t believe he could make me come like that in just a few minutes.
I feel his cock against my tight entrance and pain stabs at me, replacing the pleasu
re of moments ago. Still, I don’t want him to stop. I gasp at the invading thickness that suddenly fills my core. His cock fills me, stripping away everything but my need for him.
Our bodies joined as one, he pulls out almost all the way and then plunges deep, once again filling me completely.
Our fingers lock and hard, rough strokes rock my body. I lift my hips to meet his, all of my apprehension melting away.
His tongue slides inside my mouth, and I felt his hunger for me.
With his hands clenching my buttocks, we come together in shuddering waves.
I’m so happy my Prince Charming is the one who has made me a woman.
Chapter 6
Alex
It’s weird to pretend to be engaged to a woman I’ve only known for a few weeks. She still tenses when I take her hand in public and blushes when I kiss her. It is good that the world does not expect me to be very affectionate in public.
My parents were cautious at first. After all, Kate is an American and has no blue blood, but they received her with open arms, and the topic of my previous arranged marriage never came up again. Which is a plus.
My parents have ambushed me in my father’s office when I just want to go find Kate and take her to bed. It’s been two weeks since I took her virginity, and I don’t think I’ll ever tire of this woman. I’m going to have to man up and confess my feelings to her.
“Alex, we are not sure if Kate is the right woman for a Crown Prince,” my father says somberly. “She’s a pretty and sweet girl, but I don’t think she’ll be a good queen. I think it’s best if you break off the relationship and find a more suitable girl for you.”
“You’re right, father. Kate is not the ideal woman for the Crown Prince.”
I can see the relief on my parents’ faces and refrain from rolling my eyes.
“Caroline is still free,” my father continues. “I don’t know why you broke up with her.”
“I know you were heartbroken when your brother died, but you haven’t been the same since,” my mom adds.
“It’s going to be a cold day in hell the day I take Caroline back,” I say. My voice is calm, but I’m boiling mad.
“I don’t know why you’re so stubborn about her, Alex. She loves you so much, and she’ll be a good wife for you,” my father says, and a small vein throbs over one of his eyebrows.
“Please don’t talk to me about Caroline or my brother,” I tell them. I’m frustrated by this conversation that will get us nowhere.
“But why, Alex? You know how much your brother liked Caroline. If you didn’t do it for yourself, at least do it for him. I don’t say break up with the girl tomorrow. You can have your fun a while longer.”
Black rage bubbles my blood. “Don’t talk like that about Kate. She’s not some whore I can play with until I can marry the woman you chose, father,” I yell, shaking with fury. “Do you know why my dear brother Charles liked Caroline so much? Because he slept with her. And a week after I found out, the bastard got on that boat and died. So, don’t talk to me about sweet, perfect Caroline.”
I can see the shock in my parents’ eyes, and I immediately regret my words. The pain in my mother’s eyes hurts the most. I feel like a bastard because I hurt them. My parents idolized my brother, and there’s no point in digging up the past.
My dad sits down and looks at me, his face pale and haunted. “Is that true, son?” He’s suddenly showing his age, his voice barely a whisper.
I squeeze my eyes shut in pain. “What?” I ask.
“About Caroline and your brother.”
“Yes, but let’s not dig up the past.”
My father mutters something unintelligible under his breath. “Son, you should have told us. Now I understand your behavior in recent years. I know you think your brother was our favorite, but that’s not true. Your brother was too wild and reckless.”
“I’m sorry,” I say. “I shouldn’t have brought up the past. Focus on the future, please, and never mention me Caroline again? Please!”
My mother nods slightly and tears run down her cheeks.
I sigh. “I’m sorry, Mother, I didn’t mean to hurt you. As for Kate, I haven’t made a final decision yet, but I’ll let you know when I do. My opinion is that Kate will be a wonderful queen, but I don’t know if she will accept the role. This is not about me wanting her but about her wanting to stay. You know I’m going to do my duty to the country and the crown, but I’d rather have Kate with me. Indeed, Kate is not the right person for Prince Alexander, but she is the right woman for Alex. I know she’s been the woman of my dreams since I saw her in that elevator. Just give her a chance.”
Chapter 7
Kate
My heart is broken. I didn’t mean to eavesdrop on their conversation, but I can’t believe Alex’s parents don’t approve of me. They were so nice to me that my heart broke when I heard them speak like that. I don’t know what to think anymore. I think the best thing right now is for me to go home to the United States.
I realize that I love Alex with all my being, but I can’t stay here and continue with this lie. Anyway, I only have two weeks left, so I’m leaving early.
I go to my room and pack my bags. I leave the ring in the velvet box and place it on the table by the window. I have really enjoyed living here and being Alex’s fiancée, but life is not a fairytale, so it’s time to get back to reality.
The reality is, Alex needs a queen, and that’s not me. Sure, he likes to sleep with me, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to be a good husband. Even though I’ve been here for more than two months, Alex hasn’t said a word about love to me.
Of course, couples in other situations wait longer to say those words, but our situation is special.
I take my suitcase and call a cab. Thankfully, Alex and his parents are so caught up in their own drama, they don’t notice when I go.
I don’t take the clothes Alex bought me. I don’t need them. I don’t need palace clothes in New York.
I try not to cry on the plane, and I’m so happy when we land in New York. I get in the first taxi I can get and go straight home to cry and cleanse my soul. I find an old carton of ice cream in the fridge and start crying while eating it straight from the container. I’m such a cliché.
I thought I could spend three months with him without falling in love, but the truth is, my life has changed irrevocably since I got into that elevator.
I’m glad I don’t have to go to work. I couldn’t bear to go to the office every day. I call Lily and go see her. I haven’t seen her and Ethan in months, and I brought the boy some presents from the kingdom.
Ethan is thrilled when he sees the cars I brought for him, but he’s ecstatic about the miniature castle. I can’t believe I actually lived there. He happily unwraps the presents while Lily and I sit on the couch.
I tell her about my time abroad and start crying again. Lily hugs me. “My dear, what happened? Are you okay?
“Yeah, I’m not doing too well. I really fell in love with Alex. It’s not just the stupid crush I had before I met him.”
“And why did you leave him, then?” Lily says.
“I overheard a conversation between him and his parents. The king and queen said I was not fit to be his wife. And he just sat there and said he agreed with them. I couldn’t stay there anymore. I don’t understand why they initially treated me so well if that was their true opinion of me.
“You know how blue-blooded people are. They’re polite, but they stab you in the back,” Lily says.
I laugh through my tears. “Yes, you’re right, Lily. It’s best to forget about him and move on with my life. I’m young and I have all the time in the world to find my Prince Charming.”
Chapter 8
Alex
I can’t believe Kate left me.
I went into her room and found her ring on the table by the window. Next to it was a note that said she’s bored and it’s time to break up and return to New York. I just can’t believe she did that.
That was two weeks ago.
Maybe my parents are right, and she really doesn’t love me. The truth is, I didn’t talk about my feelings with her, and we hadn’t talked about our future and my marriage plans. I don’t know what her real reasons are for leaving, but there’s one thing I’m sure of. She lied to me in the farewell note.
I think I need to go to New York and talk to her. I can’t live with this uncertainty.
I don’t think I can’t live without Kate, and the best thing for me is to go to New York and get her back.
She doesn’t answer when I ring her doorbell, so I decide to wait in front of the building until she gets home. My patience is rewarded after an hour when she appears with a bag of groceries in her hand.
I get out of the car and reach her as she opens her door.
I pat her on the shoulder so as not to scare her, and she turns around, surprised. She is wonderfully beautiful but pale. She looks like she’s been crying.
“Alex, what are you doing here?”
“I might ask you the same thing. Kate, what are you doing? Why did you leave? I can’t believe you did that.”
“I had to do it, Alex. I know I left sooner than I promised, but it was time to go.”
“Forget the agreement, Kate. I don’t care about it. I only care about you. Why, Kate?”
“The truth is, I was bored there, and I wanted to go back to my life,” she says.
“Is that really true, Kate? Were you bored in Fairland? Don’t you think you can adjust to life there? Tell me now, because I love you so much and I want you to marry me. You’re already a princess, but now I’m offering you a real tiara. I’m asking you to be my queen, but if you don’t want it wholeheartedly, please tell me now.”
I frown at his words. I don’t understand why he’s saying these things when two weeks ago he agreed with his parents. “Alex, I don’t know what you’re playing at. I heard you back in Fairland talking to your parents. You told them you agreed with them that I was not a good fit for you, and now you’re telling me you want to marry me.”
