The captain hesitated, and brushed the hint of a tear from his eye, “but it was not enough. We lost Sara on the morning of the sixth day.”

“Captain,” Detective MacTaggart said with a respectful tone, “ye have my most deepest sympathies. Ah meant what Ah said before … none of this need come to light.”

Hunter glanced down at the journal, then smiled at the memory of his sister. “No,” he said at last, handing the journal back to the detective.

In the captain’s mind, he returned to the moments of his childhood. Specifically to a time when his sister stood up for a younger friend abused by bullies. She stood there, defiant, even when they dared to try and strike her for being ‘impudent’. Of course that was before he and his brothers arrived to teach the ruffians proper manners towards a young lady. Anthony smiled at the memory.

“It should come to light,” Hunter said. “Sara fought for it, just as you and I did. We all fought to stop this nightmare. I know she would’ve wanted this, if it would keep others from suffering under that mad woman’s hands. It’s a chance for the dead to speak against their accuser. They deserve some justice, too, if we will stand up for them and make sure they’re heard. As my sister often told me: ‘Its only proper and right to look after those who can’t see to themselves’.”
