until James and Henrietta were killed in that terrible car crash two years before your mother died. After their loss both your mother and I were devastated and lonely. I sometimes would hear her crying upstairs, and it was only with difficulty that I was able to keep from crying myself. Just like everybody says, your mother and I loved deeply, faithfully and passionately. We just never loved each other.

"So that's the story. Since your mother and I were never married, we have never been sure we were really the proper legal owners of the company, since Albert's will left it to Mr. & Mrs. Clark McMurry Clarke, a couple who never legally existed. Our solution was to never raise the issue, and when you read this you will know it worked for us. Our advice to you is to also never raise the issue lest it somehow threaten your ownership of the company. But you will have to deal with matters in the future as they come up and as best you can. That's why I'm telling you all this.

"Goodbye. God bless you all, and remember that while your mother and I never liked each other, we always loved each and every one of you, and always were immensely proud to be your parents.

  "Love,

  "Dad"
