  Chapter 1

  “Where do you want this?”

Illya Chekov looked up from his hard-drive to see a tall, hulking man in the doorway holding up the box that had ‘kitchen utensils’ written in big letters on the side. Illya rolled his eyes.

“Where do you normally put kitchen appliances?”

“I don’t know,” Ivan Chekov responded snidely, “the bathroom?”

“Fuck off, Ivan.” Illya went back to putting the hard-drive back to its rightful place on his sprawling desk. “I haven’t got time for you to fuck around with me.”

“You fuck off yourself,” Ivan muttered in Russian as he left the room.

“I would except this is my house.”

Illya could hear his younger brother grumbling in their native language as he disappeared down the hall. He was lucky to have hauled in his little brother to help him take all of his things from the apartment Illya had owned outright in the neighbourhood of Arlington in Baltimore to a huge, sprawling house in Long Reach, Columbia. It was an extra forty-minute commute to get to work, but Illya didn’t care. He had the money that he had saved from his ten years as accountant to Anton Romanov and Illya wanted something to show for it. And Long Reach was a really nice neighbourhood. No enemies around here; maybe he could have some peace in his life outside of work.

For the moment. Although that was debatable, seeing as Ivan was grumbling the whole time. For someone who did the dirtier jobs that Illya wouldn’t touch with a pole, he hated doing any cleaning or tidying that wasn’t directly related to his job. But he loved his older brother and Illya had used that to his advantage.

It had also meant Illya could buy the big desk he'd been eyeing for some time and get more computer equipment. He loved his games almost as much as he loved his family and played religiously. Having a bigger desk with more computers could mean he could work on one and play games on the other without having to leave a game to deal with something important. Anton expected prompt responses from his men, especially his accountant. Illya wasn’t about to ignore an order to jump.

Once his pride and joy was set up on the brand new desk, which stretched almost across two walls of the study, Illya went in search of Ivan. His brother was making coffee in the kitchen, the utensils from the box scattered across the island. Sighing, Illya gathered them up and began storing them away. Ivan made a face at him.

“I still don’t get why you’ve moved out here. You’re nowhere near everyone else.”

  “That’s precisely the point.”

“Nice to know what you think of me.”

Illya shook his head as he placed his knife block on the counter and began placing the knives in it.

“You know what I mean. There are better houses in Columbia than Baltimore right now. Besides,” he gave Ivan a lopsided grin, “what’s the point of being a billionaire when you can’t use the money?”

  Ivan rolled his eyes.

  “You’re not on the list.”

“Not the official one. I’d be arrested if they knew where half the money in my name came from.” Illya finished putting the knives away and then began to hang up the cooking utensils above the stove. “Anyway, it’s a lovely neighbourhood. Very quiet. And you know I needed a fresh start after Nat walked out.”

That hurt a lot. Two months earlier, his long-term girlfriend Nat had suddenly disappeared without any explanation. She'd left a note saying she couldn’t be with him anymore but that was it. Illya was still confused even now as to why she'd gone. It was something he couldn’t quite come to terms with.

Getting away from that was a good thing in his eyes.

“I don’t get why she left.” Ivan leant against the counter and crossed his arms, his biceps flexing under his sweater. “She was a good girl and she clearly adored you.”

“I know she did.” That’s what made it hurt the most. “She didn’t hang around to tell me why.” Illya busied himself with his hands to keep from punching something. Even now he was still angry over it. “That’s what kills me the most.”

Ivan was silent. Two years between them, they were close. Illya had always protected Ivan. Their father had been an abusive drunk and their mother had been a manipulative narcissist who liked to treat Ivan as her scapegoat. They had kept their heads down and worked hard, Illya finally getting them out of there when he was old enough to leave. It'd had some effect on Ivan but he wouldn’t speak much about it. He just hid behind a mask whenever he shut down. That wasn’t much around his brother, but then Illya knew not to push it. Ivan knew the same when it came to Illya.

  Or so he'd thought.

“Well, from what I could gather,” Ivan said with a grin, “you two hadn’t hit the sheets in a while.”

Illya stopped and stared at him. He felt his face going red. Ivan stared.

  “I was right?”

“I wish you weren’t.” Illya put the cutlery mesh holder in the drawer and began to put the knives and forks away. “Not that it’s any of your business, but Natasha wouldn’t touch me for months. She never said why except that she was tired.”
r />   “Why haven’t you called her and asked her why she left?”

“Because she’s blocked my number,” Illya said gruffly. “I can’t find her on social media so I think I’m blocked there and her friends are refusing to speak to me.”

“And they all live in Arlington.” The light seemed to go on in Ivan’s eyes. “Now I see why you’re out here. You want to get away from the harpies gossiping behind your back.”

“I’m not doing that,” Illya lied. “I just needed a new place.”

“Away from the screaming harpies.” Ivan paused as they heard a female yelling obscenities outside. “And speaking of harpies…”

Illya was suddenly on the alert. Nat’s friends couldn’t have found him, surely? Only Ivan and Anton, who had given him the day off to move, knew that he'd moved. They couldn’t have followed him this quickly. He hurried to the window and looked out. Ivan had driven the moving van while Illya had led the way in his huge BMW. He'd parked in the drive but Ivan had parked lazily on the kerb across the neighbour’s drive. The neighbour was now stalking around the van, giving it a kick and letting out another curse.

He would never understand where women learned such language. Illya groaned.

“Why did you park it there?”

“What? The neighbours aren’t in.” Ivan joined him at the window and saw the woman. “Well, they weren’t.”

  Illya sighed.

“I’d better go and smooth this over.”

“Have fun.” Ivan punched his shoulder and walked away. “She looks like a fire cracker.”

Illya couldn’t argue with that. From what he could see, the woman was African-American, tall and slim wearing a tan-coloured skirt with a white blouse, her long hair done up in a high ponytail. From the back, she looked like a professional, classy woman.

  Until she opened her mouth.

Illya braced himself for a fight and left the house. He was crossing the lawn when she let out another curse. Illya took a deep breath and put on his best smile. That always worked.

“Can I help you with something?”

  “Yes, I…”

The woman spun around. And stopped, her mouth falling open when she saw him. Illya also stopped.

She was beautiful. Illya had met many beautiful women in his time but never anyone like this woman. Chocolate-brown skin, dark eyes and a sweet-looking mouth, not to mention the slightly overly large breasts to go with her slim frame, she looked like one of the models in a magazine.

Illya had never met anyone like her before. But he managed to compose himself even as he felt his heart trip over itself before starting back up again, making him feel lightheaded.

“You want my van out of the way of your drive, yes?”

“I…” The woman floundered for a moment before she gathered herself, a dazed look on her face. “It’s your van?”

“I’m afraid so. My stupid brother thought it would be a good idea to park here seeing as no one was home.” Illya spread his hands as he approached her. “I’m very sorry.”

The pulse in his throat seemed to speed up. It was a warm day, but did it suddenly get warmer? The woman, his new neighbour, swallowed hard and seemed to gain back some control. Placing a hand on her hip, she gave him a sassy look.

“Didn’t your mother teach him it’s bad manners?”

  Illya chuckled.

“I think he missed that class. He missed quite a few, actually.”

“From the look of it, he didn’t miss gym class.”

The woman nodded towards the house. Illya looked up and saw Ivan standing at the huge window into the lounge. He gave his brother a little wave, which resulted in Ivan giving him the finger and walking off.

“He certainly didn’t.” Illya held out a hand. “Illya Chekov.”

She hesitated. Then she slipped her warm hand into his. She felt so delicate in his grip.

  “Blossom Fairbrother.”

Blossom. Lovely name. Illya stopped himself from showering her with that compliment. Now was not the time to flirt with his neighbour. She could be in a relationship, for all he knew. Just because there was no ring on her finger didn’t mean she wasn’t in a relationship. He coughed and took a step back, nodding towards the van.

“If you give me a few moments, I’ll move the van.”

He hurried back inside and snagged the keys from the hall table, glowering at Ivan as he made a rude gesture at him, a smirk on his face. All his brother could think about was sex. He hurried back out and jumped behind the wheel of the van. While he moved it to block his own driveway, Blossom got into her SUV and pulled into her drive. She was out and taking out a backpack and laptop case as Illya hopped down. He prowled back to her, trying not to openly stare at the nicely shaped backside pointed at him.

Blossom straightened up and turned to him, giving him a shy smile. If she'd seen him staring at her rear end, she didn’t say anything.

“Thank you for that.” She put the backpack on her shoulder. “How’s the move going?”

“Not bad, considering it’s just us two.” Illya shoved his hands into his pockets, wishing he was wearing a suit and not jeans and an old grey t-shirt. “It’s slow going but we’re getting there.”

Blossom looked towards the house and sucked her lip between her teeth. Illya felt his crotch tighten and his jeans felt uncomfortable. He shifted, hoping she didn’t notice.

“Need any help?” Blossom asked. “I don’t mind helping you out with that.”

Illya was about to refuse. She looked like she'd had a long day at work and she probably wanted to have a bath and a chill evening, not help lugging around boxes. But she looked eager to help and Illya wasn’t about to turn her away. He gave her a sly grin.

“I don’t know. Think you can handle it?”

  Blossom grinned.

“I moved in here with just my best friend and her brother for help. And that was only six weeks ago. I can definitely handle it.”

She lived here alone? Illya looked up at the house. It was almost as big as his and probably cost the same amount. It looked far too big for just her. Then again, maybe his was too big for him.

It wasn’t up to Illya to judge.

“If you’re offering, I’m not going to turn it down.”

Blossom’s smile widened and she walked towards the front door.

“Let me get some cleaning things. You haven’t cleaned, have you?” she added, giving him a hard look.

“We’re men. What do you think?”

Blossom’s eyes twinkled as she turned away.

“I’m not going to answer that.”

  *****

Blossom couldn’t believe it. Her former neighbours, a loving middle-aged couple who had gone to live in Florida for their retirement, had been replaced by a gorgeous raven-haired man in his thirties who had a charming smile and a Russian accent that made her insides melt. It was like living next door to heaven.

It was certainly a relief after coming home from work. Blossom’s day hadn’t been great. Several women, a few of them with children, had needed help escaping abusive husbands. The problem was, a few of the husbands weren’t about to let go and had found out where their wives were. Blossom’s stomach still hurt after being punched because she'd put herself between a man and his seven-year-old daughter.

So, to come home and find that a hot Russian now lived next door to her felt like absolute bliss. Blossom would certainly be at the window drooling whenever he was in the garden. Or at one of his windows. She couldn’t wait for that.

The evening passed quicker than she thought. Going over armed with cleaning products, Blossom had set to work. The brothers, Illya and Ivan, had made quick work moving the furniture while she scrubbed and got things looking like he was living in a showroom. She made his bed and put out his toiletries in the bathroom. Blossom didn’t know if it was a good or a bad thing she didn’t encounter any condoms. The thought still made her blush, even hours later.

Illya and Ivan had been lagging
behind in putting things away beyond putting the furniture in the right place. With the exception of Illya’s office, all the rooms looked like that. Blossom didn’t even blink as she moved Ivan aside and sorted out the kitchen. She ushered both men out of the room while she tackled putting all the dishes away.

For a man who seemed to be living alone, he certainly owned a lot of kitchenware.

It was nearly nine when they finished. They were all sweaty and worn out but Blossom offered to make dinner. It was the least she could do to apologize for the way she'd acted when she had seen a van blocking her driveway. Ivan had turned dinner down, claiming he needed to get the van back to Baltimore. But he'd looked meaningfully at Illya and suggested his brother take advantage of a meal he didn’t have to burn.

Blossom wasn’t going to unpick that response.

But now here she was, an hour later, finishing off the last of dinner. Blossom had expected to be in bed by this time—she always rose early to avoid the morning traffic—not cooking for two.

When was the last time that had happened?

She was applying the finishing touches when her cell phone rang. Just hearing it sent a shiver up Blossom’s spine. It wasn’t him, was it? Then Blossom remembered that she had blocked the number and told herself not to be so jumpy. Besides, he didn’t contact her by phone; he preferred to do it in person.

Relief flooding her body, Blossom answered the phone.

  “Hello?”

“Hey, girl.” Came the purr at the other end. “How’s it going?”

Blossom couldn’t stop herself from smiling. Even this late night, this call was welcome.

“Hey, Jen. What are you calling so late for?”

“I decided to stay up and watch a movie but it’s not as good as I thought,” Jenny Benson grunted. “Commercials are on right now so I thought I’d give you a ring.”

“Even though I’d be in bed by now.”

“Well, you’re clearly awake,” Jenny laughed. “What are you up to? In bed waiting for sleep to hit you?”

Blossom grinned. She'd met Jenny when she first went to work at the women’s shelter and they had become firm friends. Then when Blossom was having her own problems, Jenny had been the person she'd called. Her parents were no longer in her life, neither was her extended family, so Jenny was her lifeline. Jenny and her brother had gotten Blossom into a new place and helped her get back on her feet.
