by Barton, Kathi S.

“My partner. I can’t leave without him.” The small creature that had been a part of her when she’d been born came and added himself to her body. The man, Winchester, only stared at her for a moment or two before he picked her up in his arms. “They’re taking me to their home.”

You’ll be safe there, Addie. Just let the drugs take you so that you can begin to heal. I will never leave you. She knew that it was something that she needed to hear from him. And while he did leave her on occasion to do a job, he could no more survive the world without her than she could without him. They were a pair, the two of them.

Bug was an Egyptian scarab, or a dung beetle. To his people he was the representation of the sun’s cycle, and also resurrection. And when he was on her body, he looked like a tattoo. Bug had been there when she’d been born, long ago. She’d been a defender of the weak and oppressed since she’d been younger.

As far as his representation to the Egyptians, to her he was her friend. The one that would scout ahead of a job, make sure that she was going to be safe. And like today, had gotten her medical help when she needed it, as well as someone to hide her. Addie knew, too, that if he said that someone was trustworthy, then they were. Or he’d kill them. Or she would.

He was beautiful. On or off her body, he looked like something that was created in some kind of old-world painting. His body was a royal blue for the oceans. His wings a lighter blue that looked like the sky on a summer day. He was gold too, to show that he was rich in magic. His eyes, blood red for others to see that he was able to kill. When he was around her neck, like a necklace, she could feel his warmth as well as his heart beating against her own.

Sleep, my friend. When you wake, you’ll be much better so that we might hide from this mess. She told him that she loved him. And I you. You are the dearest thing to my heart.

The drugs took her under and she felt safe. Addie wasn’t sure that she’d felt that way around strangers in her whole life. Not even when she’d been but a baby and her parents had been alive. She was safe in the arms of a stranger.
