Stark intervened. “He’s been caught now. They all have. The best thing you can do is concentrate on getting better.”

  “My sentiments exactly,” said Anna.

Stark said her good-byes and left Flic and Anna alone again.

“Things have been running surprisingly smoothly in our absence.” Anna changed the subject and read a memo from Dee.

“I see you’ve at least waited until one day post surgery to bring this up.”

It sounded dramatic, but being shot—twice—wasn’t as painful as Flic had anticipated. She was taking some super strength painkillers, and she couldn’t be sure if the warm fuzzy feeling was because of the opiates or because of Anna. Either way, she was ready for whatever Dee and Anna had in store for her.

“You have a new agent and PA.”

  “I do?”

“Laura’s on board, has been since I left to be with you in the house, and as far as I can tell, she’s got the Love is Love campaign completely under control.”

  “Laura?”

“Apparently, we offered her a rather attractive package. How could she say no?”

Flic shook her head and shrugged. She couldn’t believe it.

“Cameron’s ready to discuss your new book whenever you are. Dee will clear his calendar the moment you give the word.” Anna smiled. “She’s predicting book number two will be a best seller.”

The luxury of experiencing some notoriety was all coming back. She’d forgotten how high people would jump when she asked them to.

“And Dee’s already scheduled and finalized the US tour.” Anna shrugged. “Well, obviously not Dee on her own, I mean. That would be a complete balls up from the onset.”

Flic was struggling to keep up. Did another promotional tour mean leaving Anna behind? “Will you be coming?”

“I don’t think that’s part of Dee’s plan, sorry, honey.”

It was the first time Anna had used a term of endearment. It hadn’t sounded half as good as she’d imagined—she hated that it was on the end of bad news. If Anna wasn’t going with her, she wasn’t sure she wanted to go at all.

“I’m kidding.” Anna delicately hugged her close. “Dee knows we’re a great team. She wouldn’t dare put that in jeopardy. I’m all yours for as long as you want me.”

Flic looked Anna squarely in the eye. “I want you forever.”

Anna smiled. “Then that’s exactly how long you’ll have me for.”

“No. I’m not talking about work.”

Perched on the edge of the bed holding Flic’s hands in hers, Anna was like an innocent child. She was beautiful and Flic knew what she was asking was serious indeed.

“Can you imagine being with someone else? Because I can’t.”

  Anna shook her head.

“So if you can’t imagine that, and I can’t imagine that, I think we should just give it up as a bad joke and when we’re ready, I think we should get married.”

Anna began to cry, and although she attempted to speak, nothing came out.

“Anna Lawrence, will you be my wife?”

“You’re proposing to me full of painkillers from a hospital bed?”

“I sure am, but I promise to make up for the lame proposal with a smashing wedding.”

  “You’d better.”

“I will. So what do you say?”

Just at that moment, Laura and Dee burst into the room full of cheer and full of gusto.

Laura glanced from Anna to Flic and back again. “Did we just interrupt something?”

Flic never took her eyes off Anna. “I’m waiting to see if Anna will say yes to marrying me.”

Dee gasped. “You mean we just burst in on your proposal?”

  Flic nodded.

  “Just this very minute?”

  She nodded again.

“Well, Lawrence? What in God’s name are you waiting for?” Dee asked.

  About the Author

Michelle is Tasmanian born and now resides in the UK, just north of London, with her wife. She’s a fair weather golfer, a happy snapper, and a lover of cafes, vinyl records, and bookshops.

Michelle harbors an unnatural love for stray pieces of timber (she promises her wife she’ll build her something one day), secondhand furniture shops, and the perfect coffee.

She can play six chords on her guitar, stumble through a song on her drum kit, and if you see her wearing headphones, she’s probably listening to Mumford and Sons while dreaming up stories and plot twists.

It goes without saying that writing is Michelle’s favorite thing to do.
