  “Muthafucka!”

Baby wasted no time retaliating. She let off four shots in succession in the direction of her father. Arthur Love dove for cover just in time to escape two of the bullets that would have surely found permanent homes in his body. He was not so lucky to dodge the third and fourth shots though. The first one burned into the back of his right calf while the other ripped through his ribcage. He could feel the blood oozing from his side. The burning sensation that started in his calf muscle steadily made its way through his entire body. Arthur Love positioned himself against the back of his living room sofa out of harm’s way. He slid his leg over, which had become numb. Then, he pressed his hand up against his side.

The shots fired at her father made for a great diversion for Baby. They were able to provide her with enough time to regain her balance. She raised herself from the floor. Then, with all her strength, she lifted Treacherous’s body again.

“I’m getting you out of here.” She threw Treacherous’s arm around her neck and opened the door.

“Baby!” Arthur Love yelled out his daughter’s name.

Baby never bothered to turn around. She continued to drag both herself and Treacherous out the door.

  “Shit!” Arthur Love cursed.

He closed his eyes tightly and banged his head repeatedly on the back of the couch. His chest heaved uncontrollably. He knew what he had to do.

“Baby!” He peeked around the sofa and yelled out again.

He saw that his daughter had made her way out the door. A tear rolled down Arthur Love’s face as he released three more shots through the open door at his fleeing daughter right before he lost consciousness.

  Chapter 39

Baby drove aimlessly with no destination in mind. Her arm was sore from the gunshot wound inflicted by her father and she was tired. She had ditched the previous getaway car and hotwired another one. She knew it was just a matter of time before they’d be looking for the BMW they had fled her old home in. Being the daughter of a cop, she was trained in the way police thought, so she also knew she had to stay off the main roads and highways for now.

The empty, pitch dark back road she traveled on only added to the drowsiness that continued to fall upon her though. The blaring of the music coming from the stereo system did little to help, so Baby shut it off. It was her survival instincts that kept her wide-eyed and alerted her each time she dozed and swerved. Every other minute, she looked over at Treacherous, who was still unconscious. Her heart ached each time she looked at his still body. She shook off the guilt that tried to creep in, knowing that, if the shoe were on the other foot, she would have done the same for him. She knew it was because of her Treacherous was in the condition he was in. Had it not been for him trying to protect her, she may have not been alive, and she was grateful for that.

All she could think about was losing him. She knew if she didn’t get him medical attention soon that may very well be the case. The thought made Baby think about not wanting to live anymore herself. The scene reminded her of one Treacherous had read to her about his parents. As tears escaped from Baby’s burning eyes, she reached over and rubbed the side of his face.

“Just hold on, babe,” she pleaded.

Baby saw the sign she was looking for that read three miles to the interstate.

“Don’t you fuckin’ leave me, Treacherous,” Baby cried. “We got shit to do.”

“I ain’t goin’ nowhere.” The words were low and raspy but loud enough for Baby to hear them.

She nearly lost control of the wheel. When she looked over, Treacherous was staring at her with his signature smile partially revealed across his face.

“Boy, you scared the shit out of me.” Baby smiled as the tears streamed down her face. “I thought I was gonna lose you.” She leaned over and kissed Treacherous. Then, she rubbed and massaged the back of his head and neck. “I got to get you to a doctor.”

  “I s . . . saw—”

Baby cut him off before he could finish. She saw the interstate sign up ahead. “Shhh. Save your strength, babe. I’m going to figure this out.” She seemed hopeful.

“Babe, listen.” Treacherous used what little strength he had to raise his hand and placed it on Baby’s lap. Baby was now all ears.

  “I saw him.”

“Saw who, babe?” Baby thought he was delusional from the bullets he had taken. She placed her hand on top of his.

“The mu’fucka who killed my mother!” Treacherous’s tone hardened.

“What? Where?” a confused Baby asked.

  “At the house.”

It all made sense to Baby now. She instantly regretted not searching outside the house for the shooter who had caught them by surprise. She knew time was not on her side though and chose securing her and Treacherous’s safety over retaliation. Besides, there was no way of knowing that the man they intended to find and kill next was right up under their very noses.

“I can’t believe this shit,” Baby cursed.

She was tempted to turn around and go back but knew the house would be crawling with cops by then. Instead, she merged on to I-95 North.

“We didn’t know,” Treacherous told her.

He was just as surprised to see the face of the man who had been haunting him for the past five years. Luckily, he had detected the movement outside the window before the man was able to take another woman he had loved away from him. The thought of that almost being the case set Treacherous on fire. At that moment, there was nothing else that would bring him more pleasure than taking the life of the man he remembered everybody refer to as Chief Randle.

Baby saw the disturbing look on her man’s face. “Don’t worry about it, babe. I promise we’ll find him, and, when we do . . .” She let her words linger.

“It’s over for him,” Treacherous said, finishing her sentence.

  Chapter 40

“How you feeling?” Arthur Love asked, rolling the wheelchair he was in alongside Andre Randle’s bed.

  “I’m alive.” Andre Randle smiled.

  “Same thing I said.”

  “Any news?”

“They found the car they were in. Other than that, they’ve checked all the hospitals and come up with nothing. My daughter’s a smart girl and a survivor, so my guess is they’re far away from this area by now.”

“Yeah, I figured as much.” Andre Randle shook his head. “How are you holding up?” he asked.

“Aside from the fact that my child killed my wife, made me a widower, and is a fugitive, I’m okay.”

Andre Randle didn’t know what to say.

“Thank you.” Arthur Love put his hand on Andre Randle’s shoulder.

  “For what?”

  “For trying.”

“Wasn’t good enough.” Andre Randle grimaced.

Just then, the nurse popped her head in and interrupted the two men. “Sorry, guys, but it’s time for the both of you to be seen by the doctor, so, Detective, I need you to make your way back to your room.”

  “Thank you, Nurse.”

The nurse flashed a smile before she left the room.

“I’ll see you later,” Arthur Love announced. He spun his wheelchair around and headed toward the door.

“Art,” Andre called out, “don’t worry. If they don’t catch them before we get out of here, we’ll find them. I think I have a good idea where to look.”

Arthur Love nodded his head. Then, he turned and wheeled himself out of Andre Randle’s room.

  Chapter 41

Big Lou knocked on his boss’s office door before letting himself in. He walked over to the desk and handed him the cell phone.

“Boss, sorry to bother you, but I think you should take this call.” The nervousness showed all over Big Lou’s face.

“What the hell is wrong with you, and who’s on the phone?” Big Lou’s boss asked.

“It’s Charlie from Richmond.” Big Lou paused. “It’s about your father.”

The mention of his father alerted Big
Lou’s boss. The only time his old man didn’t call him directly was when there was a problem.

“Yeah, Charlie. It’s me. What’s up?”

The items on Sammy Black Jr.’s desk nearly bounced off from the impact of his fist crashing down on it. “Who the fuck was it?” he boomed into the phone.

He couldn’t believe someone had the heart to make a move on his family, unless they had a death wish. His father was a made guy, and their family was connected. Aside from that, Sammy Junior had established in the streets of Virginia before he relocated to Miami that if anyone messed with his family he wouldn’t stop until he wiped out theirs. He was almost certain that it was not mob related for two reasons. One because it would be like stealing from themselves and two, none of the other families would risk bringing that type of heat on themselves unless they intended to try to take over. The questions now were who, why, and how was someone able to pull this off?

“What about the chips?” He knew the answer to his own question. He just needed to hear it for himself.

“I got a million fuckin’ dollars cash for whoever brings me whoever is responsible for my father’s death or leads me to the cocksuckers. You hear me, Charlie?” Sammy Junior fought the emotions that wanted to reveal how hurt he was. “And, I want them alive!” He knew the party responsible for the murder of his father and the heist of the merchandise left in his father’s care was of no use to him dead. There was no way to bring his father back, but he knew if he didn’t recover what was taken, he might very well end up being buried alongside his father.

Sammy Junior discontinued the call. Then, with all his might, he flung the cell phone at the wall like A-Rod pitching in a World Series game. The phone shattered into pieces on impact.

“Book us a flight to Richmond,” he instructed Big Lou.

“On it, boss.” Big Lou scurried out of the office and closed the door behind him.

When he was gone, Sammy Junior pulled out his own cell phone and scrolled through his contacts. He found who he was looking for and dialed the number. The caller picked up on the first ring.

“Yeah, I need you to meet me in Richmond in the morning. We have a family emergency.”

That was all he needed to say. Sammy Junior hung up and placed his phone back on his hip. Then, he laid his head on his desk and wept for the loss of his father.
