ONE YEAR LATER
The tow-headed boy toddled at a rate faster than any 8-month old baby should. His blue eyes stared off into the sky for long moments before returning to his toy car. A butterfly caught his attention, landing on his chubby little hand, then waving it off to let it be free.
“Dada?” He looked around, his mouth quivering.
“I’m here, River. Daddy’s here.” Hunter scooped his son up, throwing him in the air, making him giggle.
“Mama?” His blond head turned, a smile spreading on his sweet, pudgy face.
Lana held her arms out and cuddled her two boys together. She kissed her husband’s puckered lips and then one for her son.
The field bloomed with the daisies they had planted in the winter after River was born, a field of wild flowers. She loved coming out here with River and picking bushels of bouquets to place everywhere in the house.
“Pretty!” River said, touching the delicate flowers in her windblown hair.
“Very,” Hunter agreed.
Her sundress blew all around her, her hair whipping in the wind. She put River down and let him walk the rest of the way back to the house. Holding her husband’s hand, they laughed at their advanced son’s curiosity of everything.
River abruptly stopped and pointed.
“What is it, baby?” Lana asked.
“Jack!”
They both looked but didn’t see anyone.
River giggled, following something they couldn’t see.
“Lana?”
“Yes,” she said, knowing what he was about to ask.
“How does he see Jack?”
“River, come back!”
The boy turned to give her a smile too mature for his age. He then turned back and began to run faster, chasing an invisible force. “Jack…Jack…Jack.”
