Hasty Resolution

Once I went to San Diego, I realized I could no longer keep the marriage intact. Mike was with someone else; he had been for years. It was no longer worth it to keep our marriage together for the kids. I filed for divorce. It didn’t get ugly like I thought it would.
My children continue to be involved with their friends, sports, school activities, and homework. I keep the fridge stocked, drive them where they need to be, and hound them to do the chores. I’ve returned to no one noticing what I do until I don’t do it.
"Mom, I don't have time to mow the lawn today!" my youngest son yells through the main floor as he is lacing his soccer cleats on the bottom stairs near the front door. I can hear his yell echo through to the back patio where I water the flowerpots.
There is a quiet knock on the front door.
"Is someone knocking on the front door?” I ask, walking inside from the back door.
"I guess so. I have to go, Mom," my son hollers before opening the front door.
Zeke bounds to it instantly.
“Mom, the soccer carpool is waiting for me in the driveway! Don’t forget, you’re picking us up!”
My son whisks past a man standing on our front porch, then retraces his steps to yell back into the house.
“Mom, your dog is attacking the man on the front porch.” He runs to get into the sport utility vehicle and drives away.
I dry my hands off with a dishtowel placed near the kitchen sink. I couldn’t decipher what was going on or what was being said by my son. When I walk to the front door from wiping my hands off in the kitchen, I find Zeke attacking a man at the front door in the entryway. I don’t pull him back. Instead, I grin from ear to ear and my face illuminates. I want to squeal with excitement when I see his beautiful face and emerald green eyes. Standing before me, he is still strong and unmovable, which astounds me.
"Hey, blue eyes. Want to escape with me?" Jake asks with a sheepish grin.

Note from the Author
I did not set out to conquer the literary world, win awards, sell a million copies, or have any piece of fiction be my claim to fame. I simply wanted to write a novel I enjoyed reading. A character stuck in my mind, brought their friends with them and ran with it. Writing is an escape for me. If you enjoyed this piece of fiction, related to the characters or the plot, feel free to leave a review. I would love to hear from you!
