  Chapter One

Arms filled to brimming with client files, Violet stumbled into the house. She kicked the door shut behind her with the back of her high heel. Tripping forward, she aimed for the nearest flat surface where she dumped everything in a heap. Success. Not waiting another second to slip out of her heels, she flung them off in the general direction of the entryway closet. The cold ceramic floor soothed her aching feet bringing blessed relief. She glanced up at the wrought iron wall clock. Ten o’clock already! Her stomach grumbled in protest. Trying to assuage her angry stomach she padded barefooted into the kitchen to dig up something for dinner.

Her eye caught on the cabernet beside the stove. Wine first then dinner, she decided, popping the cork off of the open bottle to pour her favorite red wine. Pausing to allow the aroma to hit her olfactory receptors, she felt instant relaxation. She took a slow sip before she turned to put some leftovers into the microwave.

The faint ring of her cell phone came from the mound of belongings she had just dumped on the table. Running over, she dug through the pile until she realized her purse had been knocked under the table. Grabbing it, she tunneled through her purse, finding her phone at last at the very bottom. “Hello,” she answered, panting and gasping for air.

Her childhood friend Everleigh’s curious voice sounded on the line. “Um, did I catch you in the middle of a marathon or something?” A pregnant pause and then, “Oh shit! I didn’t interrupt you in the middle of um, extra-curricular activities, did I?”

Violet laughed heartily. “No, Ever, there’s virtually no chance of that. So ease your worried mind.” She chuckled some more as she caught her breath. “I literally just walked in the door and lost my phone in the mad dash to get out of my heels.”

“Woman, do you ever rest? Two hours until midnight and you’re just getting home?” Ever asked incredulous. “I’m exhausted just thinking about your schedule.”

“What? This is normal for me,” she admitted.

“I know, which is why I’m calling so late. You don’t think I call my other friends at this hour do you?”

“Um, I’m guessing no,” Violet responded as the microwave beeped to indicate dinner was ready. She pulled it out and took it to the couch to settle in.

“Actually, I called because I have some really good news,” her friend said, excitement bursting from her.

Violet pulled the throw blanket off the back of the couch and tucked it around her. “Awesome, do tell.”

“I just got news that Corbin’s Bend has agreed to put on a huge art fair. I got it approved today.”

“That’s amazing news!” she gushed along with her friend. “How did you pull that off?” she asked, having no doubt that if anyone could it was Ever.

“It is, and I’m ecstatic! I’ve envisioned this since I first moved here and put feelers out not long after that in hopes to garner interest,” Ever continued breathless in her excitement. “I’ve already sparked the attention of several nationally known artists who will be coming to put on demonstrations and have booths of their own.” Excitement bubbled over in her voice. “I wasn’t sure if there would be enough community support, but everyone seems to be on board.”

“Holy smokes, girl! This really is going to be huge isn’t it? It sounds like you are completely in your element.”

“Yes, it is and that’s why I need your help,” she said. “Between the two of us we have the knowhow and the history to make this festival a real success,” Ever rushed on, not allowing her to get one word in edgewise. Violet picked little red balls of fabric from the blanket as she listened. “Besides,” Ever went on, “Rob’s going to be gone on that business trip overseas, so the timing could not be more perfect for the two of us to get together and do what we’ve always done best. Violet, dust off some of your old artwork and come enjoy something you haven’t in a long time. It will be like old times,” Ever appealed. “You are so talented. I want to show you off. It’s been so long since you’ve done anything creative and I know you need a break. Plus I miss you,” she rambled. “This is the perfect time for you to come up and visit me.”

Memories swirled inside her head. Violet and Ever had grown up together, living and breathing art. In fact, they had headed up a city beautification project enlisting art students and professionals alike to take part in their project. In their senior year of high school, they had even helped head up a committee working toward building an art district for the city nearby. It had been a huge success, and she was sure that was what Everleigh was referring to.

But times had changed. While Everleigh had gone on to make art a career, with tremendous pressure from her mom and a failed relationship her first year in college, Violet had traded her paint brushes for a briefcase and went corporate instead. Anxiety curled in her gut. Did she even have it anymore? She had not picked up a paint brush in years.

“Everleigh,” she began, “you know it’s not that easy for me to get time off of work. And it sounds like you’re talking about quite a bit of time if you want me to help with the organization of a project this big—”

“No, no, no,” Everleigh interrupted, “the time is not significant. I will be doing all of the major planning. I just want you to be there with me, Vi. How can I do something like this without you?” she asked with a waver in her voice. “You know, I always imagined growing up that we would open a studio together when we were older. Plans change and that’s fine, but I don’t want to do this without you. Can you honestly tell me you don’t miss it at all?”

“Of course I do. I don’t have time to miss it very often, but it’s still in my heart, in my blood.”

“Good,” Everleigh cut her off, “then no excuses. Come for a week or two and let that side out a little. It will be good for you to flex your creative muscles. We both know how overworked you are,” she said, her voice firm.

Violet laughed out right. “Okay you’ve got me, I surrender! I miss you too and you’re right, it’s been way too long since I’ve picked up a paint brush or dug my hands into some clay. This could
be fun.”

“Could be? Will be, you mean,” Everleigh exclaimed, indignant. “This is going to be a blast.” Her tone lightened immediately. “Like old times.”

“Yeah, they are going to kill me for taking time off but,” Violet said as she smiled, “it will be worth it to see you.”

“Oh it won’t just be me,” Ever teased. “Mark my words, you are going to get here and fall head over heels for one of these spanking studs that we have here in Corbin’s Bend.”

Violet’s face burned as the words got to her. Thank God Ever couldn’t see her face over the phone. She didn’t need her best friend to know how much the word spanking still got to her. “I doubt it,” she chuckled with bravado, “but you’re welcome to try.”

“Oh come on.” She could practically hear her friend rolling her eyes. “You and I both know that finding yourself over some handsome, strong, and sexy as hell man’s lap getting your bottom turned a blazing red would be too decadent for even you to resist. Remember I know who you really are inside.”

Violet squeaked, coughing quickly to cover it up. “And you know it will never work in the life that I have. Relationships like that don’t work in the world I live in. However, I am looking forward to seeing you. I know how much you love where you live and I am happier for you than you can imagine,” she said, genuinely happy for her friend. “I love that you have found exactly what you want out of life. I just don’t see how it would ever work for me.” She sighed feeling wistful for what might have been.

“Fine, just promise me that while you are here, you will take off your corporate suit and let the real you come out to play okay, Vi? I want to see the real you and have some fun the way we used to.”

“I promise. I will let myself have some fun. And if I’m honest, a little “community” experience while I’m there wouldn’t be so bad, if you know what I mean. We’ll just see what happens.”

“That’s all I’m asking. Plus, I have a feeling you will find that we have some pretty compatible men here with exactly that little something that you can’t resist.”

“Well, whatever happens, I’m looking forward to spending time with you. That is the only thing that matters to me on this trip.”

“All right, I will email you the forms you will need to reserve your booth, and any other information you might need. Now eat some dinner and go take a long hot bubble bath.”

“Are you sure it’s you who gets her butt spanked in your relationship?” She laughed, teasing. “Because you sure do know how to be little Miss bossy pants.”

“Hey, I can’t help it if I know what my best friend needs better than she does. Now scoot. I will talk to you later.”

“Okay, talk to you later, Ever.” Violet smiled as she hung up the phone.

She had to admit a trip like this was exactly what she needed right now. She couldn’t wait to pull out some of her old art work.

“Come here you little minx,” said a deep velvety voice in her dream. “You are getting a long and hard spanking.” She felt herself being pulled over the lap of a dark and handsome stranger, skin on skin, the silk of her panties sliding down her legs. His firm hand scorched her bottom over and over again. She was being reprimanded for teasing just a little too much as that strong warm hand came down again and again in delicious cadence. She felt the warm slickness between her thighs. Her hand slipped between her legs as she tried to relieve the pressure. “Ah-ah little one, only I get to give you that sweet reward.” His hand slipped in place of hers, slapping firmly up and down her thighs and back up to her bottom. Violet moaned and thrashed, floating higher and higher toward a shattering release. She woke to find herself in the midst of having the most incredible orgasm.

What was that? She panted, trying to catch her breath. Holy shit, getting ready for this trip to Corbin’s Bend was doing all kinds of crazy things to her mind. It was apparently even creeping into her dreams. If it was like this now, just getting ready for her trip, how was it going to be immersed in spanking culture where submission and dominance were the norm? Holy cow she would never survive. She was going to spontaneously combust.

She flung the sheets back and made her way to the shower to cool down. Her natural curls clung to her neck. She was going to have to wash it before she left. She glanced at her cinnamon complexion in the mirror, which glowed from the exertion in her dream. She was going to have to calm her hormones down before she made the drive to Everleigh’s house. As it was, her friend might win out in her quest to get her to hook up with some hot dominant hunk in her community. She needed to work this out of her system before she wound up succumbing to all this craziness. She splashed cold water on her face and turned on the shower, popping in for a quick cool down before she finished up her packing. Then, a week in spanking heaven.

She hadn’t been on the road for more than thirty minutes, and the guilt from taking time off was eating her alive. Her mother’s voice reverberated inside her head. “Violet, this is a man’s world. You’re never going to get ahead if you don’t stay one step ahead of the game. You have to work harder and be stronger than any man in the workforce, and you don’t get that by taking time off.”

“Ugh!” she groaned, frustrated with herself for allowing these stupid tapes to play over and over inside of her head.

Violet knew she was being irrational. She did not share her mother’s beliefs, but frequently found herself falling into those same traps anyway. Rationally she knew she was entitled to this vacation time every year and even deserved it. Just because she hadn’t taken it before, didn’t mean that she shouldn’t now. She had paid her dues, God damn it! Her knuckles clamped down on the wheel in an iron grip. Her career was well built. Why shouldn’t she take some time off to refuel and spend some quality time with a friend?

To make matters worse, her boss had been a royal ass since she announced her intention of taking time off. Stanley had begun making snide comments alluding to her not being up for “playing with the big boys” or “pulling her weight,” frequently in front of her co-workers.

She usually brushed his barbed comments off as a bad personality trait. In recent weeks, though, it had become clear that she was being singled out for this treatment. Several of the guys had taken vacations with no flack at all. She pushed hard on the gas pedal as her frustration built. The faster she went, the more in control she felt. Her little car zipped past the other cars on the highway.

Her phone buzzed from the seat beside her for the umpteenth time. Picking it up, she glanced at the display. “What the hell do you want, Stan?” she mentally growled. Thus far she had refused to pick up or listen to the voicemails he left.

Her phone gave a little chirp indicating a new voicemail. Ignoring it, she glanced down at her speedometer. The needle pointed at the 90 mile per hour mark, climbing. “Shit,” she cursed as she blew out a frustrated breath. At the same time she noticed a highway sign that indicated a rest stop ahead. She decided that a little breather and coffee break would not be such a bad idea. A speeding ticket at this point would not help her mood.

Pulling into the closest space she could find to the rest stop’s gray bricked building, she grabbed her purse to make a beeline for the vending machines. She fished in her purse for quarters, her anxiety heightened as she could not find a single one. Calming down, she spotted the dollar bill slot. She pressed the buttons to get a coffee with cream and sugar and took a deep breath while she waited for her drink to be ready. The next machine over had a full selection of chips and candy bars. A little endorphin rush would do you good Vi, she thought and picked out a package of Reese Cups.

Armed with her snacks, she made her way back out through the double doors and outside. She sat down on a nearby bench and took a bite of her Reese Cup. Allowing the chocolate to melt on her tongue a second before swallowing; the taste of salty peanut butter mixed with milk chocolate soothed her frazzled mind. She took deep full breaths of fresh air into her lungs, b
lowing out the last of her frustrations.

Feeling better after finishing the coffee and chocolate, she headed back to her car ready to finish the trip. As she sat down, she noticed her phone sitting forgotten on the passenger side seat with a new message buzzing in. She clicked the button to make sure it wasn’t anyone important. Just as she picked up her phone, a text flashed across the screen from Stan.

FYI Since you’re busy off having fun I decided to give the Fromholtz case to Jason. Enjoy your time off.

She was livid. The Fromholtz case wasn’t even pegged to start until a week after she got back. Fury threatened to take over her newly achieved calm. She breathed in deeply. In. Out. In. Out. Centering herself, she saw his ploy for what it was. A last ditch effort to achieve control over her. There would be other cases. There was always an abundance of work. He might know that this case was one she had worked hard to land, but she was not going to give him any more power over her. Taking one last deep breath, she clicked the button on the top of her phone and the screen went black. No more cell phones. No more Stan. She was officially on vacation.

The Corbin’s Bend sign signaled that she had arrived. Pulling onto the main street in the neighborhood ironically named Spanking Loop, Violet chuckled. They weren’t much for subtlety were they? As she made her way down the street, she noticed the beautiful big dome that she remembered Everleigh saying was the neighborhood’s clubhouse. She noticed several restaurants, including a really cool looking sushi place called Ginger Paddle, and a beautiful park.

Aside from the aptly named road as she first drove in and possibly the name of the Sushi restaurant, nothing else stood out to indicate that this was anything other than a beautiful upstanding high end community. In fact, things looked downright normal. She didn’t know what she expected, paddles hanging from the street signs? She giggled to herself as she looked for the house. She spotted Ever’s house number on the left and pulled in the driveway.
