“She’s only fourteen.”
Panic sang through his blood as Chase calculated her years and the time he had left. It would have to work. He didn’t have time to hunt for anyone else. Damn it, he’d make it work. To date, he’d been unable to find anyone at all, let alone “else.”
“You still there?”
“I am. Is the girl still breathing?”
“She is.”
“Then she’s getting older by the minute.”
Over Hunter’s sputtering, he calmly continued. “I owe you. See you in a few hours.”
Not by word or deed did Chase reveal the excitement and terror welling inside as he pushed the button to disconnect the call.
“Taylor!”
“Sir?”
“Wake everyone up. Tell Kerry to ready the jet and alert the pilot. We leave for San Francisco in two hours.”
