  May 21 Lady Jane Grey is forced to marry Guilford Dudley, son of the Duke of Northumberland.

  June 21 Edward VI names Lady Jane Grey as his successor.

  July 6 Edward dies at Greenwich Palace.

  July 10 Lady Jane Grey is proclaimed Queen of England.

  July 19 Lady Jane Grey is deposed, after being uncrowned queen for just nine days.

  Mary Tudor, daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, becomes Queen Mary I.

  July 25 The Duke of Northumberland and his sons, including Guilford, are imprisoned in the Tower of London.

  August 22 The Duke of Northumberland is executed on Tower Hill.

  October 1 Mary I is crowned queen.

  November 14 Lady Jane Grey and Guilford Dudley are tried and condemned to death.

  January 12 Queen Mary signs a marriage treaty with Prince Philip of Spain.

  January Sir Thomas Wyatt raises an army and begins a rebellion against Queen Mary and the Spanish marriage.

  February 7 Wyatt surrenders.

  February 12 Lady Jane Grey and Guilford Dudley are executed, Jane on Tower Green, and Guilford on Tower Hill.

  February 23 Lady Jane Grey’s father, the Duke of Suffolk, is executed on Tower Hill.

  March 18 Princess Elizabeth is imprisoned in the Tower of London.

  April 11 Sir Thomas Wyatt is executed on Tower Hill.

  May 19 Princess Elizabeth leaves the Tower and moves to the palace at Woodstock, where she is kept under house arrest.

  July 25 Queen Mary marries Philip of Spain at Winchester Cathedral.

  1555 The Catholic Queen Mary persecutes Protestants.

  February 9 John Hooper, Bishop of Gloucester, is burned at the stake for heresy.

  October 16 Hugh Latimer, Bishop of Worcester, and Nicholas Ridley, Bishop of London, are both burned at the stake in Oxford.

  October 18 Princess Elizabeth is permitted to return to her home at Hatfield.

  1556 Persecution of Protestants continues.

  February 14 Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, is removed from office.

  March 21 Cranmer is burned at Oxford.

  April Reginald Pole replaces Cranmer as the new Archbishop of Canterbury.

  1557 The persecution of Protestants continues.

  June 7 England declares war on France.

  1558 Further persecution of Protestants.

  January 7 The French capture Calais from the English, who have held it for over 200 years.

  November 17 Queen Mary I dies at St James’s Palace, aged 42.

  Queen Elizabeth I accedes to the throne and reigns until her death in 1603.
