About the author.............
1 CHAPTER One
The beautiful sunlight filters through my window, sending rays bouncing around the room. I sigh as a yawn works it's way through my body. The sharpness of the world around me never fails to amaze me, I know the world is strange. The killings have doubled and I wonder how people can be so heartless. I wonder how the killings start, all I remember is the government putting a curfew up and the news telling me that the killings were by an unknown source. What no one but me asks is what the hell is an unknown source?
I stretch my body, trying to make myself more awake. I grab my phone from its charging station on my bedside table, I have five missed calls. Crap! I think to myself, I look at the time and shake my head. It's only 11:00. My face drops into a frown, my eyes turn to slits as I look at the text from Tasha, she knows I don't get up until I want to. My sleep is the only thing I truly love, and Tasha knows this.
I text her a quick message, I hate you, you know I want to sleep in.
Two minutes later she replies with, yeah you know you love me really. I know you don't like getting up but this is important, meet me in the lobby in five.
I shake my head and reply with a simple, okay.
I look around my room, the different shades of red are brightened by the sun, the oak desk is strewn with my school work and my laptop sits open with various tabs I had open yesterday. I rush to it and plug the charger in, just to make sure all my work is not lost.
My wardrobe stands tall against the back wall, it's oak completion is stark against the red wall. I shake my head, I have analysed my room so many times that I could have walked around blind.
I walk to the wardrobe and open its big doors, looking for something to wear. I find a black tank top, I shrug. it's better than the pink one. I look for my favourite ripped jeans, they are faded black. I sigh as I look, wondering where they are. then I remember that they are on my chair next to my desk.
After dressing I walk down the old staircase, the steps creak under my weight which makes me cringe at the thought of them collapsing.
My mother waits at the bottom, her face worn with age. Her deep blue eyes sparkle and her hair is pulled back into a ponytail.
"Hey mum, why are you here. I thought you had to work?" I ask once I've reached the bottom.
"Hey sweetie, my boss called earlier. He wants me to work the night shift" she replies.
"Oh, I thought you hated the night shift?"
"Yeah honey I do but he says he will pay me double. I can't beat that, you know money’s tight with all the cut backs"
"Okay, you want me to come meet you after work?"
"Yeah that would be nice"
"Okay, I've got to go out and meet Tasha. I'll be home later"
"Bye, see you later" My mum yells as I run out of our house.
I look at my phone, I realise I will be late. I can't make it for the arranged time, it takes ten minutes and that's at a run.
I'll be there in ten I quickly text Tasha.
I start to jog down the road, the sun glares down on me. I grit my teeth and wipe the sweat from my head, three more minutes and I'll be there. The dust on the road tries to choke me but I breathe in and out through my nose.
I rush into the lobby and collide with a boy about my age, I have to do a double take when I see him. I feel my eyes widen and my jaw drops. He tilts his head and smiles.
"uh, s-sorry" I stutter.
"It's okay" He replies, his voice makes me want to curl up by his feet and purr. I feel my disgust at the thought and I turn without a backwards glance.
I scan the lobby, looking for my erratic friend. I find her back at the lift, I shake my head and run over to her. She looks like hell I think to myself. Her long wavy blonde hair sticks up in every direction and her bright green eyes don't shine like usual.
"Tasha, what's up? Why do you look like hell?" I ask, concerned for my only friend.
"I know who is taking and killing people" She replies, talking extremely fast.
"WHAT" I gasp.
"Yeah, I know who it is. I'm sorry, I'm just scared. I just had to tell someone"
"Oh my god, are you sure?"
"Yeah, listen you can't repeat that I know okay?"
"I won't Tash, just don't do anything stupid without me"
She nods and I hug her, I'm slightly scared that she knows who is killing people but I trust her judgment. I know she won't do or say anything without telling me first.
She sighs into my pitch black hair, I've always been jealous of her lovely blonde hair. I shake away that thought, she's my best friend and it doesn't matter what she looks like.
"My mum just text me to come back up stairs" Tasha says.
"Okay, I'll see you later" I say.
She nods and heads for the lift, I shiver knowing she's going into that little box. I've never liked lifts, I wave as the doors shut. she waves back and the lift goes up.
I shake my head and yawn, I glance at my phone. it's only 12:30, I roll my eyes and start to walk home. The world takes on a strange weather pattern on my way home, dark clouds gather around my house. I shiver even though it's not cold, I feel like I'm being watched. I shrug off the feeling and hurry home.
I open the door and see the house in shambles, chairs are knocked over and the sofa is slashed. The TV is on the floor with glass all around it. I start to head towards the kitchen, wondering where my mum is and hoping that she's safe.
"MUM!" I yell once I confirm that she isn't in the kitchen.
"Up here" I hear her yell from the loft.
I hurry up the stairs, the whole house has been trashed. I gulp and I see claw marks in the wall by my room. I grab the string that pulls the loft stairs down, I pull it and walk up the stairs before they are on the ground.
"Mum" I whisper. I see her curled up in the corner and I feel tears fill my eyes.
"Are you okay?" I ask.
"Yeah, they came in and luckily I was up here, they didn't come up" She replies tightly.
"It's okay" I say as I hug her, I hate that my mum feared for her life in our own house. Emotions threaten to choke me but I push them away as I tighten my arms around my mum.
I pull my phone out and text Tasha, Hey Tash, could you come up to mine. My place has been ransacked?
The reply comes almost instantly, Me and my mum are on our wa
y, don't move they could still be there.
Unable to think of anything else to text I reply with, okay.
I cradle my shivering, whimpering mother as she cries softly into my hair. My mind reels at the thought that she could have been hurt, I’m just grateful that she was up here and as safe as one can be in this situation.
2 CHAPTER Two
Tasha and her mother arrive five minutes after I text. I hug them both and look to my mum, she hugs her knees and refuses to talk. I sigh, I hope she starts to talk soon. I know why she won’t, this is a traumatic experience for her and she’s in shock.
The sun has set, sending creepy shadows around our house. My mum jumps at everything and I'm so tired I can barely think.
"We are staying here tonight" Mrs Miller, Tasha's mother says.
I nod feeling grateful that I have a great friend and so does my mum.
I walk slowly up the stairs with Tasha behind me. I open my door, the scream I let out echoes down the street and around the house. I feel myself falling, Tasha grabs me before I fall fully. She lowers me to the floor and shouts for her mum.
"Oh my god!" She gasps as she takes in the blood all over my room.
I feel myself being pulled up, I let whoever it is help me out. Tasha has gone white and I wonder what I look like, I feel sick to my core. Who would do that, it's gross and not to mention sick.
"Come on Ellie, you have to come to mine" I hear Tasha say.
I nod, I know I'm in a deadly shock but I can't seem to shake it. The house is chilly and I realise that the kitchen window has been smashed, Nice I think to myself.
I'm pulled outside, the air makes me shiver. The moon glows brightly in the sky, it's fullness surprises me. I feel Tasha shiver as well, we both hold onto each other for comfort and to ward off the chill.
We all stumble to Tasha's. She uses the stairs which I'm grateful for, heaven knows how much I hate lifts. They may look innocent but I've been stuck in one before and I won't ever get in another one.
We walk in silence up the stairs, the perks of living in this block is the view but the downside is that you have to walk up ten flights of stairs to get there.
Once at the top, we enter Tasha's house. Her mum and mine beat us by using the lift, they have already set out some food and made hot chocolate.
I yawn as I sit on the little red sofa, Mrs Miller hates it but me and Tasha love it so she shoved it to one side of the room so we could keep it.
This house is like my home away from home, Mrs Miller loves it when I stay over so me and Tasha make sure to stay at each others house often.
My mum goes straight to bed, she rang her boss and told him what happened. She has to work both shifts tomorrow.
I sigh as she leaves, Mrs Miller kisses me on the head then says she's going to bed as well. Tasha and me stay up, The horror of what I have seen kicks in and I start to cry. My breathing hitches as I cry uncontrollably, Tasha hugs me until I fall asleep.
*****DREAM******************
I'm running, the forest is quiet and the moon hang full in the sky. It's light scanning the the world for it's creatures. I feel the wind tangle in my hair, my eyesight is so sharp that I can see the tiniest leaf.
I hear a growl, my head snaps to where the noise came from. A lone wolf stands tall, it's black coat shines with health. I hear something running towards us and I realise that my ears are sharper than they should be.
My breathing picks up and I take off running again, I didn't even realise I'd stopped. The wolf follows me, I run down the hill and I jump a little stream. More wolves fall in around me and I feel my fear reach it's peak, the other wolves have either cream or different shades of gray fur. The black wolf guides them and I suddenly feel at ease with the wolves around me.
Just as we start to pick up the pace, a gun shot sounds and I fall. Pain radiates around my body and the wolves snarl, they attack as one.
My breathing slows and I feel myself floating.
*******DREAM OVER***************************************
I wake up with a gasp, my heart races like crazy. I look around, I panic until I realise I'm in Tasha's house.
"Hey, you okay?" I hear Tasha mumble.
"Yeah, just had a strange dream" I reply.
She nods then jumps out of bed, I notice that the sun isn't shinning through the window. I sigh as I know the sun is taking a break, I love the sun and it always stays behind the clouds.
I yawn, the house is strangely quiet. I wonder where my mum is, I see the note on the table next to my makeshift bed. I pick it up, it says:
Gone to work, don't wait up for me. The police are at our house so don't go back just yet. I love you be careful. Love mum x
I shake my head, I don't have anything to do. My phone is nearly out of charge and I don't have a lead here.
Tasha goes and has a shower which leaves me on my own, I walk into the kitchen and grab some bread. I'm not shy here, I wait for the bread to toast then I put butter and jam on it.
I've just finished eating when Tasha appears, fully dressed and ready to go out for the day. Rolling my eyes, I pull my shoes on and we walk out of the house.
Tasha locks the door and we head down the stairs, it takes us about twenty minutes to get down the steps and into the lobby.
"I don't get why you hate lifts" Tasha says as she puts her hands on her knees, trying to catch her breath.
"I just don't like them" I reply.
She rolls her eyes and we head towards the shops, we enter the best shop first. The rack are full with summer clothes and I like everything, I make a note of what I want to buy. I'll give it to my mum later.
We walk around the shops for a while before heading to the park. I sit on a swing, Tasha does the same and we just sit in silence. The events of the past day try to choke me and I close my eyes, trying to stop them.
"It's okay" Tasha says.
"When will the killings be over, I hate living in fear" I reply.
"Soon I hope" She replies.
I hope so too.
3 CHAPTER Three
The wind howls and the rain pours. I don't know why I chose today to go for a walk in the woods. It's been three weeks since my home was trashed, I still fear leaving my mum on her own but I need my space. I realise that the woods isn’t the best place in the world to go right now but I just love the way the trees sway to the breeze and how the animals sing their cheery tunes without feeling the fear I do.
The night is silent and the moon is nearly full, the forest gives me Deja Vu. I feel eyes all around me, I wonder if this forest has wolves; it shouldn't.
I shrug, the walk is simple and nice but in the dark it's creepy. I used to come here whenever I needed space or I was upset.
The creatures don't judge you like people do, it's nice.
I slowly walk around the uprooted tree. It's my favourite place to sit and watch the world go by.
I sit, the moss around the tree is wet. After a while, the shadows come alive. My heart beat increases as I hear shuffling. I gulp slowly and try to calm my racing heart, it’s no use though as my heart become so fast I’m sure it will jump out of my rib-cage.
I hear a growl, just like my dream I think to myself.
I feel myself stiffen when I see the glow of golden eyes. black fur surrounds the eyes and I know it's the wolf from my dream. I breath slowly as the wolf watches me.
I jump up, not knowing if the wolf will attack. It just stares at me, looking deep into my soul. It unnerves me the way the wolf is staring at me, like it’s trying to find out everything about me. I shiver with fear and cold, the wolf looks like it wants to comfort me but thinks better of it.
I turn, the shadows follow as I take a step back from the wolf. The wolf regards me before walking towards me. My breathing picks up as the wolf slowly walks towards me.
My phone suddenly goes crazy with texts, I ignore them as I start to run.
The wolf gives chase and I find myself running hard and fast to try to o
utrun a wolf.
I jump over the little stream and down a hill, the wolf gains on me and my heart rate increases.
I'm scared out if my mind, the forest blurs together as I try to escape. I don't think I'll make it and that scares me even more.
I jump down a little wall, my foot gets caught in a tree root and I go flying. I fall with a thud.
I try to get up but my leg is broken, I hear the wolf right behind me and I let out a scream of fear.
So this is how the dream ends, the wolf does eat me after all I think to myself.
The wolf snarls, I turn around just in time to see the wolf leap at me. I put my arms up so it won't bite my face.
The wolf latches onto my arm and I scream, the pain is intense. I scream as the wolf pulls away, taking a chunk of my arm with it.
"Please don't kill me" I say meekly.
The wolf stops and studies me, I just watch it. It stares at me and I hope it will just go away. The wolf nods then disappears, leaving me alone in this deep dark woods.
My mind reels, what are my family and friend going to do without me. Why was I so stupid and how will I get back home. My main question is why did the wolf leave me? I didn’t think they knew words and why would it listen to me?
The shadows surround me, making me fear for my life. My arm is bleeding heavily and my mind goes fuzzy. The darkness scares me the most and I hope someone finds me.
I'm in and out of sleep for about two days. My blood has dried and is starting to flake off. My phone is flat and I wish I had Tasha with me. Then I realize what is killing people; the wolf.
Startled, I see a person, running towards me. I struggle to sit up so they can see me, the light from the day is falling to darkness.
"Ellie?" The person says once he sees me.
"Yeah" I choke out.
"Oh my god, it's okay you'll be fine" The mysterious boy says as he picks me up.
I feel myself being swayed, my heart beat drops from blood loss and I hear the boy growl. The forest is completely dark and I wonder how he can see.
