Behind the Shield Page 21

by Sheryl Lynn

“I imagine so. Oh, and before I forget. A fella from Mutual Security and Assurance is looking for Madeline. Turns out Parker told the truth about one thing—there really is a finder’s fee. You want his number?”

The water stopped running in the bathroom. It had been six months and he and Madeline were getting to the point where they weren’t thinking all that much about the hijacking and her father and Jill and Tony Rule. “Nope. If he calls back, tell him we’ve changed our names and gone into the witness-protection program. Besides, you know I can’t accept rewards.”

“Uh, Carson? It isn’t for you, it’s for your wife. Don’t you want to know how much it is?”

Stark naked, her honeyed skin glistening, Madeline walked out of the bathroom. She scrubbed at her long wet hair with a towel. Carson’s mind blanked as all the blood rushed to another part of his body.

“Who are you talking to?” she asked.

He looked at the phone. “Room service.”

“Two point eight million dollars, Carson. Two point—”

Carson nearly dropped the phone. He was in love, not an idiot. Two-point-eight million would buy a lot of beads. “Take care of that and there’s a big tip in it for you.” He hung up on Pete’s laughter. “I ordered whipped cream.”

She giggled. “But I just showered.”

He opened his arms for his lovely wife. “Reckon you’ll just have to shower again.”
