I stepped towards Serena and took her by the hand. Lucy quickly took out glasses so I could hold both Serena’s hands.
“Serena, you’ve been like a breath of fresh air in my life these past months.” I winked and she frowned. But that was my cue for the conversation to be joined.
“Well not for all of them. She was a downright party pooper for a little while there.”
Serena spun around and her hands flew to her mouth. “Mum! Dad! What are you…? How did you… Why are you…”
I enjoyed her flabbergasted state as she hugged her parents. I took the opportunity of her distraction to drop to one knee and pull out the tiny box I had picked up that morning. My mother burst out crying at the same time as Lucy. Her mother soon joined them, and her father just turned her around to me. He hugged her and whispered.
“Whenever a young man is in this position, I believe we all know what’s coming. He has my permission and you have my blessings.” He kissed her brow and went to stand by my father.
She was shaking like a leaf as I took her left hand in mine. Her tears slowed faster than she could brush them away. I took a deep breath.
“Serena, from the moment I laid eyes on you I knew, I just knew. You were the one for me. I fell in love with your passion for life from that day. And with every passing day it has only been cemented. As I kneel before you today, I declare that my heart is yours and can only hope that you feel the same. Serena Bishop, will you marry me?”
Time stopped again. Everyone seemed to hold a collective breath. Seven pairs of eyes fastened on her. She broke into silent sobs and nodded.
“Yes. I will.”
I held her shaking hand in mine and slipped the diamond engagement ring onto her finger. I rose in one movement and caught her up in my arms.
“Kiss me, soon to be Mrs. Connor Wright.”
She smiled and laughed through her tears. As our lips met, we knew that it was only the beginning of the race of our lives.

Lydia Maxwell:
One moment Taylor is scowling at my tardiness and the next moment he is propositioning me.
What do I say to that? Of course, I hold my tongue from insulting him and his family any further. The man has the power to save my company or let it wither before it even gets a chance to blossom.
I just have to tolerate him for a year.
Certainly, I can do that.
I can keep up the ruse as long as he keeps his end of the bargain.
Fingers and hearts crossed that nothing changes.
Taylor Hirano:
I’ll admit that it’s hard for me to open up.
It’s not easy for someone to hold my eye. But Ms. Maxwell is proving otherwise. Something about her that makes me want to open up just a little bit. To tell her about the demons that I hide. Perhaps it’s her Oscar-worthy act that’s getting to me. I shouldn’t get too close. When the time comes, she’d be gone, and I’d be alone as she found me.
