The Hike (Book 1): Survivors Page 30

by Quentin Rogers

The door opened into a yard with a very tall fence that was lit from above. There were several soldiers and a few civilians milling around, most of them puffing away on cigarettes in the night air. Patrick eye’s locked onto Mary and James sitting at a metal bench in the middle of the yard. He sprinted towards them as soon as he recognized who they were. Mary barely had time to stand up by the time that he reached her, and his momentum was enough that they almost spilled over with her going backwards when they collided. Patrick squeezed her so tight that he was scared he was going to break her, but he couldn’t make himself let up. Mackenzie slammed into them both seconds later.

James yelled “Dad!” from somewhere by Patrick’s knee and he scooped him up into the mass of family. Patrick’s whole mind and body was in relief.

THE LONG HIKE WAS FINALLY OVER.
