Impossible Page 19

The doorknob jiggled and turned slowly, finally popping the latch. I pushed it open, and the light from the bright living room stunned my pale blue eyes. My first staggering step out of the closet made Nathan and Cam gasp.

My wrinkled face could barely muster a smile. The hair on my head was now entirely silver and white. It hadn’t been long at all for Nathan since I’d left, but it had been a lifetime for me. I’d dreamed of it as the years washed over me, both yearning for it to happen and fearing that it would come. Now I was overcome with embarrassment. How could they possibly accept me for who I was now that I looked so differently?

I hunched over slightly, and my hands were shaking. One of them held a single syringe, the product of a lifetime of waiting. It contained the cure for Huntington’s disease that the Cammie in another world had created. Now that I had it and I was here, I could fulfill my promise and rid Nathan of the disease that was killing him.

Before any of us could say anything, my foot caught the floorboard, and I started to fall. Like lightning, Nathan rushed to my side to catch me. His big arms surrounded my tired, aged body. I glimpsed him beside me, admiring the determination and resiliency on his face.

“Don’t worry, we’ll find a way to save you!” he promised, and it meant the world that he wasn’t about to give up on me.

“I’ve waited so long to see you again,” my warbled voice mumbled as he held me firmly.

My senses were so dulled that I didn’t even realize the syringe had fallen from my hand until it shattered against the floor.
