My hand flew to my mouth. I couldn't breath. I panicked and began to gasp for air. I pushed the channel up button several times to change the channel. At that moment, Bellamy returned with our dinner. I could feel my face lose all of it's color. He laid the bags of food on the coffee table and then he looked over at me.
“What's wrong? You've look like you've just seen a ghost.”
“I um....”
No words would come out.
“What is it Kate? What's wrong? You look like you're about to pass out. Are you feeling okay?”
I stood and walked quickly into the kitchen. I started opening every drawer and cabinet I could get my fingers on. Bellamy was only a few steps behind me as I frantically searched the kitchen.
“What are you doing?”
His voice had a tone of concern more than any thing else.
At that moment, I had found what I was looking for. It was a knife block with a set of very expensive Gordon Ramsay knives. I yanked the one from the block that had the largest handle because I figured it would probably also have the largest blade. It would be able to protect me better than the others.
As I grasped the black handle in my shaky hand, I took a deep breath and turned around to face Bellamy. My arm stuck straight out and I pointed the knife at him.
“You stay the hell away from me!” I shouted and my words echoed through his carpet-less penthouse.
The palms of my hands grew sweaty and I didn't know how I was going to get out of there. Bellamy had killed Beth. Beth was dead. He shot her in the head and left her there like a piece of useless garbage. He had to have done it. Her body was found at Stockton Yard where she had met him that one night. Then he was gone from work all day today. Did he leave work to go and kill her? He probably made her meet him there so he could shoot her.
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“Beth. You fucking killed her. It was on the news. Don't take another step towards me!”
“What? Killed her? You've lost your damn mind, Kate. I told you, she left town.”
He laughed and grabbed his stomach like he was falling over it was so funny.
“I'm fucking serious Bellamy. Nice try... she left town. Yeah right, you could have come up with a better cover up than that. I saw it on the news while you were paying the delivery guy. Channel 43. Turn. It. Back. On.”
I motioned the knife towards the remote that was laying on the couch.
He put hands up towards me as if in an effort to say 'don't shoot'. Then he took a few slow steps towards the remote, but he kept his eyes glued on mine. He bent at the waist to pick up the remote and flipped the TV back on to Channel 43. The news was on a commercial and I stood at least ten feet away from him while we waited to see if the story would run again. I didn't dare take my eyes off of him. A few silent minutes and several commercials later, the news returned. By the third story, the original story about Beth's murder replayed. Bellamy watched contently until the story was over. He didn't say a word the entire time.
Bellamy took a deep breath and blew it out in frustration, but he didn't say any thing.
“You fucking did it. Didn't you... you bastard! I heard you in your office the other day talking with Turner about getting rid of her.”
My shaky hand with the knife pointed towards him still as tears began to fall heavily from my eyes.
“And then you had to go and be so wonderful to me. I tried so hard to brush it off. I told myself that what I thought was going on wasn't really happening.”
I wiped my tear coated cheek with the back of my free hand.
“Kate... Let me explain.”
“No Bellamy, don't you even dare. You don't get to say a thing. I trusted you! I gave you every part of me. You said you wouldn't hurt me!”
My heart raced and I felt like I was going to pass out as my stomach grew nauseous with feelings of disbelief and disgust. Every nerve in my body began to tingle and I am sure it was my adrenaline preparing me to make a run for it.
At that very moment, I heard a loud ding and the elevator doors could be heard opening behind me. I turned my head to quickly take a look. Turner walked in casually. With Beth. Beth?! Beth is dead!! Turner had his hand draped playfully around her waist and she smiled at me.
“Hey Katie!” Beth squealed in excitement as she walked into the sitting room with Turner at her side.
When my brain finally caught up to what my eyes were seeing, I dropped the knife from my hand like a ten pound bag of bricks. It it made a loud clanking noise as it hit the hard wood floor.
“Back from the dead so soon I see?”
The tone in Bellamy's voice was evil like they were playing some sick game.
“Yes, well I think I look pretty hot for a dead chick. Don't you think, Katie?” Beth eyed me as she spoke.
At that moment, I watched as Turner's eyes suspiciously darted to look at Bellamy who was still behind me, out of my line of sight. As I turned my head to follow his stare, I heard a few loud footsteps rush me from behind. Then the room began to spin and everything went completely black.
Who is Beth Vanguard? What are Bellamy and Turner hiding about their secret life?
