My necklace began to glow hotter with my anger. Magic started to pulse through my body as I stared down the two people I hated most in the world. They were ready to kill Drake and my friends. I refused to let that happen. If that meant I would die saving them, then so be it.
Daphne and Vivian’s eyes widened as a blinding light began to flow from my every pore. I screamed as I fought against the strength of my enchanted friends, breaking free with a blast of magic. Drake was starting to get up, healing himself after having his neck broken. He stopped moving to watch me stomp in the direction of the two women.
Grasping for straws, Vivian grabbed a hold of Roark’s head, her hand poised over his chest. “Make another move and I’ll rip his heart out,” she threatened.
The magic coursing through me was almost too much to handle. My nerves felt like they were on fire. Drake slowly stood up, shaking his head, obviously knowing that I was about to make a move. Daphne grinned, placing hands on her hips.
“Who has the advantage now? You may have that necklace, but I have your sister. She’s the most powerful Witch in existence, aside from Merlin.”
The necklace grew brighter, the light expanding around the room as if it was about to close in on us. Daphne looked around nervously. Vivian didn’t move because she knew that if I found an opening, I would blast her away. I had no love for my sister. After she turned into a monster, I knew there would be no way to bridge the moral divide between us. It broke my heart, but we were at the point of no return.
As the light made its way around the warehouse, everyone grew quiet, waiting to see what was about to happen. Not even Kevin, Jenna, or Mikey were trying to recapture us. Something crazy was about to go down, and not even I knew what it was.
There was a ripping noise then, which echoed through the entire warehouse. We looked around, but by the time we realized what was happening, there was nothing that could be done to prevent it. Two of my ancestors came out of the light behind Daphne, the appearance of their monster-like faces making me cringe. As they clawed their way out of the light, more tearing sounds could be heard. Daphne attempted to run, but they grabbed her, claws digging into her chest.
“We must take you back to our home. You have disrespected the Chosen One,” they said in unison. “The Chosen One saves us all.”
“Leave her alone! Get your hands off of her!” Vivian turned to attack, running in their direction as she screamed. “Daphne!”
“You are next. We shall come back for you!” the ancestors declared ominously.
Vivian froze, debating her next move. She took several steps back, then turned to start running, leaving her lover behind. The front of the warehouse burst open at that moment, and an army of men and women shot through the opening. The next thing I registered was a shot ringing off, and then Vivian fell to the floor, a stake driven into her chest.
I ran over to her, for reasons I couldn’t be sure of. She looked up at me, tears streaming from her eyes. “I tried to be good, I really did.”
One of the ancestors appeared from the light, hobbling over in my direction. “She must come with us. Her sins are too great to let her pass beyond where we remain. We must punish them both. Never to be seen again. Never.” The ancestor started dragging her away, toward the light.
Then there was yelling, and the warehouse door banged open. I glanced over to see more than a dozen men entering the building. Zander and Finn appeared next to me, watching as the ancestor dragged Vivian away. I wanted to stop them, but why? Did I feel bad that they were taking my sister? There was nothing left that we could be patched up between us. I was sad that our relationship was so bad that we hadn’t talked at all over the years.
“What the fuck is that?” Finn asked, holding a gun in his hand.
Glancing over to his second in command, Zander sighed. “I believe that’s a Witch ancestor.”
Disgusted, Finn shook his head. “That’s creepy.”
Drake came over to where we were and offered a hand to me so I could get to my feet. Then I hugged him hard, the necklace still glowing between us. Staring over his shoulder as the ancestor disappeared, I relaxed in his arms. They were gone. What would Daphne and Vivian’s punishment be?
“You know what you have to do now, don’t you?” Zander asked me.
It was something that I hadn’t thought much about. Even though the ancestor claimed that I’m some kind of Chosen One, I didn’t think I could pull it off. That meant me being in charge of the Witch’s Council. Or did it? From the expression on Zander’s face, though, I knew I had to at least replace Daphne.
*
After spending a week compiling evidence against Daphne and my sister, I finally presented the case in full to the Witch’s Council. They were surprised and impressed that I was able to take down the Head Mistress. However, they weren’t really into the idea of my becoming the new Head Mistress. In fact, the majority voted against me—at least until the ancestors came into the room to show that they supported me.
The Council was equally shocked by the statement from the ancestors. Thankfully they were in their hoods, looking mostly human. Unfortunately, my taking over the position put a heavy burden on my relationship with Drake. In response to the issue, he decided to begin a new company in my town, and left Roark in charge of Riverdale’s operations. It was a surprise that he was willing to sacrifice so much for me.
We moved into the Head Mistress’s home, and had Daphne’s stuff disposed of as soon as it became clear I would be leading my people. My cat was furious for several days, constantly making messes, and even hissing at Drake. She eventually warmed up to him. Though, with her, I never knew if silence was a bad thing or not. She was too smart for her own good, and often stewed in her hatred before she attacked.
Zander didn’t take long to try to work with me. He wanted to begin manufacturing the peace between Witches and Vampires immediately. Something about him made me nervous, though. Did I want to deal with him so soon after becoming the Head Mistress? The ancestors didn’t answer me when I posed the question. They had been silent since helping me take over the position. The necklace glowed at times when I used magic, letting me know they were there. Hopefully I wouldn’t come to regret working with them. Becoming Head Mistress was a huge change, and it scared me pretty badly. I didn’t know how to lead people before, but every time I stepped in front of them now, I became something greater than my normal self. My confidence would appear, and I took charge.
“What are you thinking about, love?” Drake asked, trailing a finger down my stomach, stopping just at the panty line.
I shivered in anticipation, immediately becoming wet for him. My nipples perked up, appearing beneath the thin tank top I was wearing. We were in bed, resting after dealing with so many people who had complaints against Vampires. It was never ending.
Shaking my head, I smiled. “Just about how much life has changed in such a short time.” My heart started beating faster just thinking about it. If I wasn’t careful, I would become overwhelmed. That was the last thing I needed. Drake shouldn’t have to see me have a meltdown.
As if he knew where my mind was going, he closed his mouth over my nipple, the heat from it doing amazing things to my body. I purred in pleasure, arching my back. He reached over, grabbing my ass. “Fuck me my naughty little Witchpire,” he growled.
“Witchpire? I like that.” I pushed him onto his back, straddling him. “It will be my pleasure.”
