“I have already procured a special license,” Tristan revealed. “We may be wed when we choose.”
“Were you then so sure that I would succumb to you?” she asked.
“I was so desperate for you to say yes, that it felt like a talisman that would make it true.”
They fell silent, and Caroline listened for a moment to the sounds of the carriage springs creaking and the clip of the horse’s hooves over the rumble of the wheels on the cobbled street.
She turned to Tristan impulsively, “Very well then, let us marry tomorrow afternoon. In the morning I will go to Brook Street, and have Beckham begin to pack my trunks, and bring Jonathan and his nursemaid and governess to your house. You decide where our wedding trip will take us; I am happy to go anywhere.”
“Will Venice do?” Tristan asked with a laugh in his voice.
“As it is the farthest from my family of any destination you have mentioned, it sounds delightful,” Caroline replied.
A sudden lurch as the carriage rolled over an uneven patch of road flung them together, and Tristan clasped her to his chest, and kissed her passionately. When he lifted his head, he was breathing heavily, and Caroline was flushed.
“Tomorrow will do nicely,” he muttered, and kissed her again.
