  Which, for some reason, made me think of cake.

  Mmm. Cake. I wondered if someone would fetch me some. Oh, and some licorice, too. And…

  *

  Across town, Willow peeked out her window, looking for her cat, barely more than a kitten.

  She’d not had him for long and only found him by chance, an orange stray who suddenly appeared in her life right around the time of the Peabody incident.

  Where are you, furball? He never spent the night outside, preferring to snuggle under the blankets against her lower back.

  When Whiskers didn’t come, even after she shook the food bowl and made kissy noises, she ventured outside, wand in hand, incantation ready to fly.

  What she saw sent her running back indoors to grab a phone and dial.

  “Psychic Network, you need it, we know it,” said the bored male who answered.

  “This is a call for the TDCM,” she stated.

  Immediately, his tone changed. “How can I help you, ma’am?”

  “I’d like to report a theft.”

  “Ma’am, this line is for serious magical emergencies. Theft and other petty crimes should be called in to the regular police.”

  “Not a normal kind of theft. I am fairly certain a demon stole my kitty.”

  “Why would you think that?”

  Because of the clawed paw prints singed into her lawn.
