“Excuse—"
“I’m going to make sure she feels loved. Every single fucking day of her life she will know. No doubt about it. I don’t know you, but I needed to tell you I’m going to be the man to give your daughter everything she’s ever wanted, and none of it has to do with money.” I exhaled and tipped my head before turning around.
“Sam,” he called, and I stopped. “Thank you. She…” He sighed. “You’re wrong.” I turned to look at him. “I know exactly how easy she is to love. Loved her since she took her first breath. I did a lot of shit wrong in my life, and there comes a point you have no clue how to make it right.” The regret in his voice was pained and clear.
“You could start by picking up the phone and saying hi,” I informed him. “Macie has a lot of great and some not-so-great qualities. She can be stubborn. But I’ve learned she has the most forgiving heart.” With that I walked out and got to the airport.
I held her ring in my hand the entire flight, excited and nervous about getting home.
Home.
I’d always thought home was a place, but it wasn’t. Home was wherever Macie was.
Sneak Peek to Last Minute
RIGHT THERE IN front of me was all the proof I needed to show me what an idiot I was to let everyone around me talk me into something I’d known wasn’t right from the get-go. My gut had been right after all.
My stupid, good-for-nothing boyfriend was cheating on me.
In my bed!
“Leti, baby, it’s not what you’re thinking.” He pounced out of bed, reaching his boxers on the ground, leaving the poor girl he was doing a piss poor job satisfying to scramble to cover up. I gave them my back wondering how the hell he was going to try and talk his way out of this all while trying to figure out if I had enough money to buy a new mattress or if I would have to bug my parents. Ugh, my parents. They liked him. They liked his family more than anything, if I was being honest with myself.
“Baby… say something,” he pleaded, and I turned, looking at his stupid face.
“So, you two didn’t just hook up?”
“No!” he exclaimed, but at least the brunette sitting in bed had the graciousness to look horrified. “Baby, it was just a moment. Didn’t mean—"
“Are you serious right now?” the brunette spoke up and shook her head as she got off the bed. Thankfully, she’d already thrown her dress back on and was currently making good timing of grabbing her shoes. I felt bad for her. She obviously had no idea about me. “Look, I don’t know you, you don’t know me. But had I known Jeffrey was seeing someone, I would have never come back to his place. Like, ever! That’s against the sisterhood, and I genuinely abide by the sister code.” She rambled on, “I’m all about women empowering one another, not plying shit on each other. But honest, bible, it’s totally okay if you don’t believe me since well, this…” She pointed to him, and she and I tried not to laugh. I liked her. She was honest, and I knew Jeffrey. He was a total worm!
“This is my place. He still lives with his parents.” One of the biggest reasons my dad liked him. Like living with his parents made him some kind of virgin. I almost wanted to laugh at the entire situation.
“Oh my god, I am so sorry!” she gasped, her face ashen. “You’re a fucking creep!” she spit out at him, then turned to look at me. “I didn’t know,” she said after slipping her feet into her heels and crossing her arms. “I’m sorry. I’m not that type. I don’t even do crazy shit like this. My boyfriend dumped me for his gym buddy, and I was at a bar trying to cope.”
“I’m sorry.” And I genuinely was.
Jeffrey was a skeeze. I knew it. I should have trusted my gut, but I hadn’t been able to prove it. I had the proof now. I could chuck him off my shoe like gross old gum.
“Shit happens. He said he didn’t know he was gay until he and Patrick had a fight that ended with them kissing and I guess more than kissing, though I don’t want to think too much about it. Not because I’m homophobic. I’m not. Not even close! Love is love is love. But I can’t think about it because I thought I was going to marry him.”
“Ouch.” I knew I just met the girl, and not in the best of circumstances, but, call me quirky, I felt for her.
“Yeah. Then he said he was single, and this was his place,” she said, pointing at Jeffrey, his face turning all shades of red.
“Funny, he’s never paid a cent in rent,” I sassed, resting a hand on my cocked hip.
“Dick.” She shook her head. “I’m Rosalee,” she said, and I smiled at her. Genuinely.
“I’m Leti.”
“Hey. I’m right here,” Jeffrey said, raising his arms.
“And why, I have no idea,” I added, annoyed and done with him.
“What? Leti, baby,” he started to say, but I was d-o-n-e.
“No, Leti baby nothing. You need to get your man-whoring ass out of my apartment before I call the cops for trespassing. Oh, but I need the key I gave you so you could water my plants when I was gone for my sister’s graduation before you go.”
“Are you serious? You’re going to let this get in the way of us?” he said, clearly shocked by my announcement, though how that was possible, I had no idea.
“Jeffrey, let me be very clear. There is no us,” I said seriously and looked at Rosalee. “You wanna go get something to eat?” I offered without a second thought. Afterall, she wasn’t the one who had done wrong. It had been him.
“That would be good. Wait, what’s happening? Shouldn’t you hate me?” she asked, and I shrugged.
“I never fucked him,” I bluntly shared.
“Maybe if you had, I wouldn’t have to get my dick wet somewhere else,” Jeffrey muttered under his breath, and Rosalee hit him hard against the head.
“You’re disgusting!” she said to him before turning to me. “You weren’t missing much.” She put her thumb and forefinger an inch apart, and I smiled. “Like, not much at all… if you know what I mean.”
“Fucking bitches,” he mumbled, and I laughed as he walked out, slamming my key on the table next to the door before he left.
“So, pizza or Chinese?” I asked.
That was the day my life changed.
