“I got a call from the photography place. They restored the collection. We can pick up the pictures at any time.”

“That’s great.” I look at her. “You’re okay with keeping the movie posters? You don’t mind them going into the upstairs office?”

“Of course, not,” Amanda says. “I think it’s fitting. I’m glad we saved them from moisture damage.” She rubs my back as I flip one of the steaks. “We’re making our way through her movie collection. Are there other movies like hers?”

“Oh yeah, loads,” I say. “You like them?”

“I think they are crazy and quirky, and I love they’re not overtly sexual. They’re tantalizing and erotic. Definitely not like porn.”

“See, I’m glad you enjoy them.” I begin stacking the steaks on the plate Amanda holds for me.

“I get a little turned on watching them.”

  “That’s the idea.”

She makes a funny face. “The 70s bush on the girls is a little over time.”

“That leaves room for imagination when you’re looking at their whisker biscuits.”

Amanda laughs so hard that I have to steady the plate before she drops it. She leaves me to shut down the grill. We’re ready to have dinner outside with friends.

  AMANDA

I am in complete and utter bliss. Never in my life did I think showing a random house to a guy I didn’t know would turn into the best thing that ever happened in my life. My parents love Tyler. I don’t know if it’s because he’s charming and sensitive with a whip-smart wit, or the fact they finally get me out of the basement. Dad tells me he called a contractor to finish the basement finally. It’s a good move, and I feel the unfinished setting where I lived was a way of sending a subtle message.

I bring the plate to the picnic table, and we’re ready to sit down with friends. I have more friends now, and cops banded together. It has to do with putting their lives on the line. Brandon doesn’t have a girlfriend, so he stares at everyone else’s girlfriends. We girls know that he’ll be next having someone at his side.

“Did you call Jackson?” Brandon asked.

“He’s got to work until six. He’s coming over then,” Tyler says. He lifts his beer. “To good company.”

“To friends,” Brandon says. “And to an old erotic film actress who had a modest taste in houses.”

“That, I can drink to,” I say. “But I saw a few of her films. She’s got bigger tastes when it comes to men.”

“So naughty,” Monica says. She looks at Tyler. “I like her. She’s yummy.”

We dine and laugh into the night. Jackson arrives, still in uniform, and we’re short two girls for Brandon and Jackson. I think as we enjoy each other’s company, it won’t be long before the men find women as wonderful as the rest of us. I know they are handsome and sexy and ripe for the picking.
