As I moved to pile into the car, Ms. Baxter called out to me to wait. "Lani, ride with me back to your house. I want some company and Billy's car is about full."
"O.K.," I said looking at Billy to see if she cared. She nodded to indicate she didn't and then asked, "So, Lani, how was it for you? You glad to be a lifelong member of the club?"
"Well, it was wonderful, you all know that. I'll never forget it and never be able to pay you back But you know what, I don't think I'm going to be a life member of the club. In fact, at graduation in May, I'm going to let my membership expire."
The surprise and disappointment on everyone's faces was deep and sudden. "What?" they said in near unison. "You're going to quit at the end of school?"
"Yes I am," I said softly and left a dramatic pause while they just looked at me from the car in stunned disbelief.
"But why? Nobody quits. I thought you loved it."
Cracking a huge smile and shaking my head so as to throw my hair back I happily announced, "Oh, that's so simple, it's so I can rejoin and get initiated all over again."
The light came back to their faces and they broke out laughing. "You bitch!" blasted Jen.
"Tell you what Jen. I think you better do the same thing and we can let Billy and Chris, and Ms. Baxter too, of course, see if they can come up with anything better."
"Fine!" Jen exploded bouncing in the car seat, "then right now, Lani and I are announcing our resignations effective at graduation next May and petitioning as new members to join the club."
Half an hour later as we cruised down the windward side of Oahu on our way back to my house in Ms. Baxter's BMW convertible, neither she nor I had said a word. She drove along happily, but in silence, as I reclined on those neat leather seats and watched the beautiful scenery go by. I'd been down this road hundreds of times, but never grown tired of it.
As she pulled away from a stoplight, she broke the silence that had settled comfortably over us. "We are very proud of you, Lani. I just can't tell you how happy we are that you will be the next generation of our little sisterhood."
I assumed that the 'we' was Ms. Baxter and my Mom, but wanted to ask. "You mean you and my Mom?"
"Why, yes. You know your Mom was very sure that something in you would be responsive, but she was always absolutely careful to avoid any possible influence on you from her."
"I'm glad you feel that way. I'm anxious to tell her all about what I've discovered. I want to show her these lovely marks. I know it sounds weird, but I wish she could have seen me," I added almost shyly.
"I guess I should tell you that she did see most of the better stuff from the house and the club. I had a video made for her. I didn't get that last part with Bart though. That was really something. Anyway we are going to a little play party of our own. Seeing your films and got your Mom pretty excited. Maybe you can compare whip marks tomorrow night. And then on Wednesday you will have your own new adventure."
"Yeah, I guess Wednesday is all right. You sure about this guy, Mr. M?"
"I know him very well. To be honest I've played with him myself. He's very good and knows what he is doing and how to whip a girl. Besides, he has a really cool dungeon set up at his house and... I suppose I should but I won't tell him about the whipping that Bart gave you. That was your choice, and besides, he'll most probably notice the marks himself anyway. I won't tell you more about it now so as not to spoil it for you. The way you soak up the pain and enjoy it, you're going to love it. So, are you ready to really explore this new world of ours?"
Why not? Should be fun. Wednesday would be cool. This was going to be a great summer. I am going to have a great life.
