Hobgoblin Night: Mask and Dagger 2 Page 35

by Teresa Edgerton

Oberon removed his hat, tucked it under one arm. "The centuries roll on, and life is unutterably boring. In a world grown stale and flat, only Titania remains eternally fresh and new. I believe that I wander, only that when I return I may feel once more the delightful shock, of your novelty."

"The centuries roll on," Titania answered, "and I grow weary of your endless affairs, your heartless deceptions."

"I believe that I finally realize that," said Oberon, and now his manner was far less arrogant. "When you first said my name, I heard such bitterness, I knew that I stood in danger of losing the one thing that makes my life endurable. Titania . . . beloved . . . if you will give me but one more chance, I think I can promise that you will not be disappointed."

As he spoke, she heard something in his voice—a vulnerability, a touch of humanity—which had never been there before.

And perhaps, she thought, this is the revelation we have all been awaiting. That as we grow older, we become more human.

She had a vision of herself and Oberon, not as gauzy-winged beings transformed like butterflies, but as a comfortable old couple, turning gray and prosaic, happy to spend their declining years in each other's company. The shocking thing was that the idea did not repulse her. In fact, it had a certain perverse charm.

And that being so, she knew what her choice must be.

"I believe," said Titania, offering him her hand, "that I can find it in my heart to forgive you one last time."
