His Secret Life Page 14

by Webb, Debra

Though Victoria had certainly wished to wipe out the threat to her granddaughter, she couldn’t help feeling regret that human lives had been lost. Even if those humans were nothing more than vicious criminals.

“I’m sure there was no way around that result,” Victoria suggested. She knew her son. Though he had at one time been a ruthless assassin, that had changed. He did not take human life for any reason other than a last resort and in defense of his own life or that of another.

“That was Barker’s plan,” Jim said. “One of us was going to die. Lucky for me, it was him.”

“We’ll be waiting for you at the agency,” Victoria told him.

  “Well done,” Lucas put in.

Tasha and Jim said their goodbyes and the call ended.

Relief, so profound that she would have swayed with it had she not been seated, washed over Victoria.

Tasha reached across the table and squeezed her hand. “Jamie’s safe now. We don’t have to worry anymore.”

She was right. Victoria reached for Lucas’s hand. “Our family is strong. We won’t be outdone quite so easily.”

  “Hear, hear,” Lucas agreed.

The courage and strength that had wavered the past two weeks filled Victoria. She wasn’t old at all. And though she tired from time to time, she was far from done.

The Colby Agency had only just begun.
