Though she couldn’t make eye contact with him yet, she said, “I guess Shane and I should probably talk. We’ll meet you at the house.”

  EPILOGUE

Lina was glad she’d decided to give Shane a chance. It turned out that, in fact, what she had thought of as his authentic self really was. That, in fact, once he’d said the words, “I love you” came easily, sincerely, and regularly to his lips.

With the whole good and evil thing out of the way, it turned out that Grey was also great company. He and Shane were pleased to find that their friendship from before had been just real enough to persist now.

Which was great, because it was Grey who helped Shane regain his skills with a sword. Apparently, Shane hadn’t been too bad the last time he’d carried a sword, but that had been centuries ago.

It was also Grey who showed them all they needed to know to be demon hunters. He’d initially tried to warn off Lina, apologizing to Shane for getting in the way of love, because he was worried for her safety. Once they showed him her fire, he changed his tune.

It wasn’t anywhere nearly as easy or pleasant a life as the one they’d had before. They were trying to slowly save up enough that they’d be able to settle down once Shane finished up his part of the deal. Until then, they traveled and stayed in cheap hotels. They sucked up the challenges and did the work.

And, like a promise, like a reminder that they were on a new path that would change his very form, Shane now had a ring of grey around the iris of his left eye. To celebrate, he put a ring of silver on Lina’s hand.

“We’ll finish this. We’ll figure out your fire. And we’ll do this together. For good,” he promised.

  “For good,” she agreed.

  “Don't wanna let you down

  But I am hell bound

Though this is all for you

  Don't wanna hide the truth

  When you feel my heat

  Look into my eyes

  It's where my demons hide

  It's where my demons hide

  Don't get too close

  It's dark inside

  It's where my demons hide

Your eyes, they shine so bright

  I wanna save that light

  I can't escape this now

  Unless you show me how”

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Chapel Byrne moved too much growing up, so she daydreamed constantly to build herself a stable world and a love life that could go with her. All of that somehow got her to the non-imaginary stability of a cozy home with an opinionated, pretty boy. The moving is done, and the daydreaming is now just for pleasure and inspiration for books. She believes in truth, music, beauty, and the power of words. In her rare leisure moments, she enjoys NASA videos and getting lost in other people’s creations. Whether or not there are supernatural things in the world, she’s going to keep having a crush on the idea.
