Ocean's Cage Page 10

by Carlton, Demelza

I want one, was my first thought. The second was that I needed to know more about riding one. A mermaid on a motorcycle was joke enough without me wobbling around with no idea of what I was doing.

"This model has twin-shoe brakes instead of the dummy-belt rim ones my Triumph has. And this has the new low-pressure, wire-edged tyres which won't jolt so much. The ride will be much smoother. The oil – "

Pregnancy must have dulled my wits, for Sarah understood better than I did. She stormed down the steps. "Will, you're a bloody fool! Buying your pregnant wife a motorcycle? What kind of crazed idea is that? You think she wants to ride that throbbing thing while she's carrying your child in her belly? You're a – "

Wonderful, wonderful man. I couldn't seem to speak the words. I just stared at him and the motorcycle, but mostly at him. William understood, though. Since the day we met on the Trevessa, he'd been reading my eyes and the thoughts behind them.

I stumbled down the steps, clutching at the handrail to slow my descent, my eyes never leaving William's. Once I stood on flat ground, I threw myself into his arms, planting fervent kisses on his mouth, his cheeks and any part of his face I could reach.

Jackson's voice cut through my euphoria. "You mean this magnificent machine is for your wife? McGregor, you're crazy, man! My wife wouldn't touch one of these things, let alone know how to ride one. Or appreciate the engineering that went into creating it..." He stroked the curved fuel tank so fervently I wondered if he'd ever touched Anne that way. I doubted it. In fact, it was almost obscene.

"Mr Jackson, I'll thank you to stop fondling my motorcycle."

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish.

She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below.

Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world.

The Ocean's Gift series was her first foray into fiction, followed by her suspense thriller Nightmares trilogy. She swears the Mel Goes to Hell series ambushed her on a crowded train and wouldn't leave her alone.
