“Well, I do want to help you. I’ve saved up enough money that I can build us a new house along with plenty of space for an apothecary in the front.”
“You don’t have to do that,” June objected. “I don’t want you to marry me because you feel sorry for me.”
“You must really have no idea how much I care about you, June Bug. Yes, I want to take care of you; however, I wanted to marry you and use my money to help you with your apothecary well before the fire ever happened. This just made me realize it was stupid for us to keep waiting for some moment to come when we thought it was the right time. Now, is the right time, because I love you. I love you so much, I don’t want to spend another day without you being my wife and Ben being my son.”
Claps and cheers sounded around the room as June realized that Daniel just declared his love in front of all of Belle.
“Are we getting this wedding underway?” Paps shouted across the church. “We all want to see you two finally get married.”
“Let me go change,” June said, taking the dress from Becky. “Do you mind helping me ladies? I want to make sure I look perfect when I marry the man I love.”
June took off for the back of the church and slipped through the door to the back area. She changed into the lace and satin dress that had sheer sleeves to the wrist, and a skirt that cascaded from the waist to the floor in pretty layers.
“You look gorgeous, June, prettier than I ever did in that dress. I’m so glad it fits you as good as it does,” Becky gushed with pride. “Daniel isn’t going to be able to look at anything else for the rest of the day.”
Her friends hovered around her, putting on all the accessories, fixing her hair, and making sure to pinch her cheeks just enough to make them rosy.
“There, you look perfect,” Kate said with a sigh. “You’re the prettiest bride I’ve ever seen.”
The other women exited out of the back room so they could take their seats. Becky handed June a bouquet of flowers before leaving. June went out the secondary door and made her way around the church and up the steps in front of the double doors. She pushed her shoulders back, took a deep breath, and headed down the aisle into Daniel’s waiting arms.
Epilogue
Late September 1881
Daniel and June stood side-by-side with Ben in front of them, as the final part of the barn-raising was complete. Everyone was congratulating the Davis family and telling them how they had the best barn in all of Belle.
“They look happy, don’t they?” June said, looking up at her husband with joy.
“They do, but between you and me, no one can be as happy as us.”
“You’re probably right,” June agreed with a snicker. “We set the bar pretty high on the happiness scale.”
“What are you two laughing about?” Uncle William asked as he joined them with Mabel by his side.
“Just about how incredibly blessed we are,” June stated with a giant smile, “and since my entire family is here now, I think it’s the perfect time to tell you; I’m pregnant.”
“Wait, what? How do you know? It hasn’t even been two months,” Daniel noted, flabbergasted by the news.
“A woman knows,” June stated, patting her stomach. “Besides, this isn’t my first time.”
“How does a woman know?” Ben asked with bewilderment.
“I’ll explain that to you later,” Daniel told Ben, realizing his job as a father to a boy was already a lot of hard work, and now, very soon, he would be adding a second child to the equation.
“Congratulations,” Uncle William said, giving them both a giant hug.
“That’s such wonderful news,” Mabel said with a smile.
“What are you congratulating the newlyweds on?” Becky asked with curiosity as she came up to the group.
“Well, I wasn’t going to tell that many people this soon, but,” she looked around and then lowered her voice to a whisper, “I’m pregnant.”
“You’re what? Pregnant?” Becky shouted out in surprise, then realizing she said it so loud that all of Belle turned to look at her, she covered her mouth with humiliation.
“Thanks for announcing that for us, Becky,” Daniel stated with a shake of the head. “So much for keeping it quiet.”
“I’m sorry. I just couldn’t believe it,” Becky stated with shock. “It’s so quick, but I’m really happy for you.”
“Thank you,” June said, giving her friend a hug. “We’re going to be really busy making baby clothes at knitting club.”
“Yes, we are,” Kate agreed, as she approached the group with her sister beside her. “I love baby clothes.”
“Will this mean I will be doing most of the oversight for the building of the new house and apothecary?” Daniel asked, slightly relieved that June wouldn’t be hovering over him second-guessing his every decision for the project.
“I can’t guarantee that,” June warned. “You can’t forget that’s my other baby.”
Everyone started to laugh, except Ben who had a look of confusion on his face. “Where do babies come from? I still don’t understand.”
This caused everyone to laugh even harder, making Ben turn red with anger at being the source of their amusement.
“I’m going to go find Sally. At least she doesn’t laugh at me,” he scoffed in anger, running off towards where all the children were playing.
“So, wife, I have to say, this barn-raising will not only go down in the history books for the Davis family, but for us too. You’ve made me the happiest man on earth, knowing that you’re giving me a second child to love.”
Daniel bent down and kissed his wife on the lips, knowing that entering the Belle apothecary three months ago was the best decision of his life. Finding his way back to June was the exact remedy he needed, and he was never going to suffer from a broken heart again.

Acknowledgments
My writing journey would not be possible without those who supported me. Since I can remember, writing is the only thing I love to do, and my deepest desire is to share my talent with others.
First and foremost, I am eternally grateful to Jesus, my lord and savior, who created me with this “writing bug” DNA.
In addition, many thanks go to:
My husband, Dustin, and three daughters, Katie, Julie, and Nikki, for loving me and supporting me during all my late-night writing marathons and coffee-infused mornings.
My mother, Connie, for being my first and most honest critic, now and always. As a little girl, sleeping under your desk during late-night deadlines for the local paper showed me what being a dedicated writer looked like.
My angels in heaven: my grandmother, who passed away in 2001; my infant son, Dylan, who was taken by SIDS five years ago; and my father, who left us three years ago.
To my ARC Angels for taking the time to read my story and give valuable feedback.
And lastly, but so important, to my dedicated readers, who have shared their love of my books with others, helping to spread the words about my stories. Your devotion means a great deal.
