“Alex was smart to lie low. She’s still gunning for him.”

Karen sighed. “Actually, one day I hope he does find the right person. Right now I want everyone to be as happy as we are. Do you think he’ll ever settle down?”

“He called me last night. Wished us luck. Made excuses for not coming. That surprised me.”

  “Maybe he’s finally growing up.”

“First he has to develop a conscience.”

Karen hugged Lee’s arm—her husband’s arm. “If he’d had a conscience back then, things might have turned out very different. I’m glad it happened the way it did.” She paused. “Did you see Rachel and Martin? I’m hoping something will start there soon. They’ve always fought like cats and dogs, but I’ve begun to wonder if that isn’t a cover. Like with us. Sometimes the stronger the antagonism, the deeper the feeling.”

“That’s why you were happy when Martin caught the garter.”

“I made sure Rachel caught the bouquet! I thought you knew.”

  “Nope, pure chance.”

“Did you see Diego? You can’t tell which are his real teeth and which are the replacements. They look wonderful. He’s so handsome. He always has been, but—”

“Hank showed me his truck. First thing I had to see when I got into town this time.”

“Pepper has her new living room set, too.”

“Did Mary show you her savings book?”

  “No! Did she show you?”

  “Oh, yes.”

“They look on you as a friend, Lee. Someone who helped make their dreams come true. Aren’t you glad you got rid of the headstone?”

  “I was glad right away.”

“You realize they’re making you an honorary citizen of Twilight?”

“Well, I seem to be with you more than I’m in San Francisco, when the crew’s not on the road.”

“They hope to convince us to stay.”

  “Do you want to?”

“I want to be with you, wherever that is. I used to think living in Twilight made the difference in me. Gave me the freedom to be myself. But it was in me all along. All I had to do was listen. I can take that with me anywhere.”

He squeezed her hand. “I’m listening to something right now.”

“What?” she asked, even though she had a good idea of the answer.

“I want to get you inside that fancy hotel room we have reserved, pick you up, carry you into the bedroom, rip all your clothes off and have my wicked way with you.”

She giggled. “It’s going to take a while to get there.”

“Not if we follow Mae’s plan.”

  “Oh, dear.”

“Her neighbor has his own plane and he’s willing to fly us directly to Cozumel.”

  . “She’s already asked him?”

  “That’s Mae.”

“Mae’s really very sweet, isn’t she?”

He laughed. “Don’t ever let her hear you say that!”

“She reminds me a lot of Aunt Augusta in the way she watches out for the people she cares for.”

“I’m going to have to take your word for that.” He laughed lightly. Then he gave her an estimating look. “What do you think your aunt would make of us right now?”

“I think she’d be very happy.”

“Karen Parker.” Lee tried out the legal blending of his last name to hers.

“Karen and Lee Parker,” she murmured back.

Lee couldn’t wait any longer. He pulled the car to the side of the road, took her in his arms and didn’t notice that the sky was once again resplendent with color as the sun sank slowly beyond the mountains in the west.
