His eyes crinkled as he grinned at me. “Not quite. Now, never mind them. I wanted to ask you something.” His smile fading, he gave me a somber look. “It seems to me that you are quite intent on finding this…donor of yours as soon as possible.”
“Ah…well, yes.”
“You and I are attracted to each other.” His eyes held mine steadily. “And I hope I don’t come off as vain, but I’m an attractive man.”
My heart fluttered as I realized what he might be getting at. “I don’t think it’s vain to state the obvious, Bastian.”
“Fair enough. And we both seem to like each other well enough, if I’m not mistaken.”
My heart stopped fluttering and started pounding, hard and fast. “What are you getting at, Bastian?”
“I meet all of your qualifications, Venus,” he said quietly. “I can even assure you that once everything is…accomplished, you won’t see me again. I’m hardly ever in America, and it was simple chance that we ever met in the first place.”
“Bastian…”
He covered my hands with his. “I could give you a baby, Regan. If you’d like.”
