On Monday, July 13, we finally left for Siberia. We flew four or five hours each day, stopping nights in remote places like Novosibirsk in the western lowlands. Just as in the war, I had a Soviet navigator on board to make sure we didn’t stray into restricted areas, but in other ways there were astonishing contrasts between the trip now and the one in 1942. The B-24 bomber I’d flown then cruised at about 180 mph, compared with 600 mph for the Learjet. The bomber’s heaters had been broken, and in spite of our shearling flying suits we’d been in a near stupor from the cold. I’ll never forget the sight of General Bradley wiping the windshield with vodka to keep frost from building up. But the Lear was designed to handle extreme cold—it is always Siberian winter at the high altitude at which a modern jet flies.
During idle periods in the cockpit I gazed out the window at the ground below, amazed once again at the vast expanse of Russia. Maybe once an hour we’d see smoke and a big industrial installation, but there were almost no roads or villages. I was reminded of Alexis de Tocqueville’s meditation on the untamed American wilderness, and his prediction in the 1830s that the United States and Russia would become the world’s two great powers. At each airport we were greeted by local officials and old soldiers from World War II. They’d give us a little welcoming ceremony in a hangar, with food and soft drinks and speeches about U.S.-Soviet friendship as demonstrated on this ferry route.
Finally we reached Yakutsk, the little tundra outpost where we’d nearly crashed in a snowstorm during the war. It had become a bright and bustling city, with ten-story buildings that the Soviets have learned to erect on top of the permafrost. From the air we could see the booming port facility on the Lena River nearby. I put the Lear into final approach and marveled at how the airport had changed. In 1942 it had been nothing more than an open field with a single tar runway, but now it was a major hub of Aeroflot, with masses of concrete and tremendous numbers of planes.
The mayor met us at the airport and we toured the town. The old wooden shacks I remembered were mostly gone, there was no trace of the prison camp, and the weather was warm. The local museum hadn’t changed, however, and walking into that place with its modest displays of drawings and native artifacts and bones was one of the strangest experiences of my life. In advance of our trip I’d supplied the old lady who ran the museum with photos from the Lend-Lease mission. She’d made a little exhibit, and I found myself standing in front of a picture of me and my war buddies in the same room with a mastodon skeleton and the mummy of an Eskimo princess.
Before the afternoon ended, I took an hour and walked alone on the bank of the Lena thinking about my life. Yakutsk was where I’d gained my self-confidence as a young man—where General Bradley had promoted me and where the crew had finally accepted me as their leader. I looked across that great river, which I was seeing unfrozen for the first time. The thought came to me that, whether my life went on many more years or ended tomorrow, I’d accomplished something just by seeing the place again.
In my honor the Soviets had located eight or nine veterans who had served in the Lend-Lease operation. I remembered some of them right away, including a stout little mechanic who had arranged for General Bradley’s entire crew to get fur-lined thigh-high boots like the native Yakuts wore. Those boots had saved my feet from frostbite, and I still felt grateful to him forty-five years later. We had a wonderful feast, and I went to bed happy that night. I understood this might be my last great air adventure but for the moment that didn’t make me restless at all.

When I returned from my ambassadorship to Moscow in 1981, Andrew began urging me to tell my story, and it was Andrew who, six years later, escorted me to Fortune magazine and introduced me to Marshall Loeb, the managing editor, and to my eventual coauthor Peter Petre. This book does not pretend to be a comprehensive history of the computer industry, or IBM, or even of the Watson family. But it would have been much less complete without the friends and colleagues who helped reconstruct the events we describe. As I worked on the project I turned back to some of those I’d depended on at IBM. In particular, I want to thank six of my former executive assistants who later went on to become officers of the company: Dean McKay, who did masterful work in shaping IBM’s corporate image through design; Bob Hubner, one of the most effective and empathetic managers I ever met; Spike Beitzel, a particularly shrewd adviser; Dean Phypers, my confidant in the 1960s when IBM was under enormous strain; Jane Cahill Pfeiffer, who saw me through the difficult year in which I had a heart attack; and David McKinney, who aided me in the sometimes painful process of disengaging from the business.
