Coven of Magic Page 20

by Leah Silver

“Well, I’m glad you’re ready. This will be a fight. It won’t be the life you’ve been used to.”

“Mom. I’m a vampire, not some dewy-eyed schoolgirl. I’ll be fine. And Levi will be with me while you’re out hunting.” She put a hand on my shoulder, comforting me. Wait. When had we changed roles?

“Well, as long as you know what you’re getting into, and you’re okay with it.” I scrambled to get back into my authoritative role.

“Do you even know what we’re getting into?”

I hesitated. “No. Not really. I know it’s a mess of a problem that I’m not sure I can fix. That’s about it.”

“And that’s okay.” She grabbed my hand and squeezed it. “We’re in this together.” She paused for a moment, her expression turning serious. “The council is hiding something from you.”

“I know. I think this super race might have something valuable of theirs. Something they’re threatening them with.”

  “What?” she asked, completely horrified.

“When I’m out, stay close to Levi. Promise me. I need to know you’ll be safe. New Orleans is full of its own dangers, even when there isn’t a race-ending plague threatening our world as we know it.”

“I will.” She threw her arms around me in one of her soul-soothing hugs.

I never pulled away from her first, ever. Because I just never know how long she needed. When she was ready, which was inevitably always before I was, she went and grabbed her suitcase off the bed, and we walked out into the hall.

The four men who’d come to mean so much to me were waiting there for me. Levi had my bag in his hands.

I nodded to them, getting solemn nods that were deeper than vows back. Demons and a super race with vampire bloodlust waited for us. But I was ready, because they had my back.

The hunt was on. And I never missed.
