“I signed on the dotted line, you gave her to me!” He accused.
“That’s mine,” he pointed at Danni beyond the glass in the hospital bed, “and that’s mine too.” His finger swung toward the live image of her baby thriving in her belly.
“We understand. I have been given the authority to reinstate you as her partner. If she survives this the upper management has decided to give her an option of continuing on in the same capacity once she has given birth or she can be transferred with you to a less dangerous position. We never intended for pregnancies to be possible for a Bionite but it seems she wasn’t sterilized like the others. If she lives she will always be a part of this system but in this rare instance they are willing to break the rules.”
“Can I go to her?”
“Yes, come with me.” She had him change his clothes to sterile ones and place a mask over his lower face to help protect Danni from any bacteria he might be carrying. He walked slowly toward her bed at odds with the volatility he displayed before. He leaned down toward her face and saw her eyes blinded by the fire didn’t see him. “I’m here Danni, I told you I wouldn’t let you go.” He just kept repeating that he loved her, that she had to get better. He spoke to her for hours telling her they would raise their baby together and it would be the start of a whole new set of experiences they would share together. He told her he wanted to touch her so badly but was afraid he would hurt her worse than she already was. He told her of how his world wouldn’t be the same without her. Finally the doctor came back and told him that they needed to do more tests on her and he should get some rest. “I will wait upstairs and watch everything you do to her.” She nodded in agreement seeing that he would fight to stay. When they entered operation command was a buzz of activity, the screens were flashing, people running all over.
“What’s happening?” The doctor asked as she ran over to a monitor. One of the lab technicians happily replied, “The minute he started to walk away the nanites began going crazy. They are still protecting the baby but have begun healing her at an amazing rate. It’s as if they didn’t want him to leave.”
“Get back down there Simon, let’s see what they do.” Simon quickly got to Danni and saw a ripple along her flesh. Burnt skin fell away like ash and new prefect pink skin was revealed. A speaker in the room sounded with the doctor’s happy voice, “The nanties seem to like you, and they are working harder than we’ve ever seen them before.”
“The sun is shining again.” Simon jerked back to Danni, her face totally healed love and happiness at seeing him evident. He grasped her healed hand and brought it to his lips, his face mask dangling from one ear forgotten. “I love you too.”
