Skye peeped at her wristwatch and realized that time was against her. Her flight would soon be called any moment from now and going into the rest room or any hidden spot to have virtual sex with Finn was not an option. She closed her eyes, allowing the darkness to slowly creep in, then slowly, she opened them again, exhaling the air she had drawn in.
“Sir,” she said slowly, hoping that what she was about to say wouldn’t piss him off. “I’m about to board a flight back to Cork and I can’t…”
Finn’s voice cut in. “That’s alright. You don’t have to miss your flight because of me. See you tomorrow in the office. Safe flight.”
He hung up.
Skye’s bewildered gaze moved from the empty space before her to her phone screen, her mouth slightly open. “Was that Finn?”
Mabel heard her voice but couldn’t make out the words. “Sorry?” the older woman asked, looking at Skye.
“Oh, not you,” Skye replied, brushing the matter aside. “I was just thinking aloud.”
Mabel nodded and picked up another magazine.
Skye leaned on the chair, still thinking of Finn’s last statement. What in the world could make Finn to so easily take no for an answer? She imagined that he must have been in a very good mood. And he even wished her safe flight; that didn’t sound like the Finn she worked for.
Maybe he has learned the act of being nice to people.
Skye folded her arms across her chest to smile at the thought of a less cocky Finn. Just then, their flight was called.
Skye boarded the aircraft, her thoughts centering on Finn as she eagerly looked forward to seeing him at work the following day.
Chapter Eleven
Skye stepped out of the elevator and hurried down the broad corridor, the hem of her ash-colored high waist pants, swirling round her ankles as she walked. It was almost eight and she needed to be at her desk before then. Being at her desk at least ten minutes to the official opening time had been her working principle for the eight weeks she had been working with Finn.
A cleaner came out from one of the offices, pushing a cart containing his cleaning agents and equipment. He whistled along and stopped on getting close to Skye.
Skye stopped once he drew nearer. “Good morning Mr. Max. How are you doing this morning?”
Mr. Max smiled. “Good morning Miss. Foster. I’m great and you?”
“I’m good,” Skye replied. “You seem super excited this morning. What’s the secret?”
Mr. Max laughed heartily. “No big secret ma’am. I’m just grateful that big guy up there,” he said, pointing to the roof, “has blessed me with the gift of a new day.”
Skye found Mr. Max’s faith in God quite amazing. Given ample time, she would have loved to engage him a conversation about the reason for his firm believe in God.
“Alright then,” Skye said. “Carry on with your duties and do have a great day.”
“You too ma’am and stay blessed,” he said and set to wheel his cart away.
Suddenly, the left wheel of the cart turned inwards, making the contents of the cart jerk forward. Mr. Max struggled to hold the cart from falling. Fortunately, he succeeded in preventing the entire cart from overturning. However, he couldn’t stop a bottle of blue liquid soap from falling off. Before he could hurry to catch the container, the contents had spilled out, splashing on to the floor and the surrounding walls. A part of it spilled on Skye’s pants. Luckily, it didn’t splash on her white shirt and handbag.
Mr. Max’s heart sank on seeing the damage that had been done. He looked at Skye’s face, his eyes apologizing to her as he spoke.
“I’m really sorry ma’am. I didn’t mean for any of this to…”
“It’s okay, Mr. Max. It was an accident and I’m not offended.”
His face glowed once more. “Really?”
“Yes,” Skye replied and bent to pick up the liquid soap. Apparently, the cleaner’s frenzy had made him forget to pick up the cleansing agent.
“Thank you,” he said, collecting the container from her. Skye took out her handkerchief to dab the stain on her pants. She only succeeded in cleaning the jelly substance, but the wet mark was still visible. She ignored it and set to leave for her office.
“See you around, Mr. Max,” she said as she walked away.
“See you,” Mr. Max replied and set to clean the mess.
Finn who had gotten off the elevator just when the accident happened walked briskly past the scene like he didn’t notice the mess.
Mr. Max trembled on seeing him. “Good morning sir,” he greeted.
“Morning,” Finn replied and walked past him.
Three hours after arriving at the office, Finn was already exhausted from the day’s work. He leaned back to reflect on the event that took place in the corridor earlier that morning.
Skye’s words to the cleaner echoed in his ears, forcing him to voice them out. It baffled him how a beautiful and learned lady like Skye would be so nice to a cleaner. As their brief conversation replayed in his mind, one fact hit him – Skye had a good rapport with her colleagues, something which he didn’t have.
That reality reminded him in some way of his attitude towards his subordinates. He did a mental rewind on how he got here and the only thing his mind led him to, was a time in his past when the hurt from his girlfriends peaked.
He felt a tinge of anger as he thought about the subjects of his heartache. Cynthia had been to him everything he ever needed – companion, lover and friend – which is why he didn’t hesitate to reciprocate her love in every possible way. He signed large cheques on a regular basis, sponsored vacations to places of interest and sent her gift cards every weekend. He literally did everything she requested and he never once imagined that he was being conned. His greatest shock came when he stumbled on her wedding invitation card barely two weeks after he proposed to her. She was getting married to his personal assistant. The very same personal assistant that she claimed she never liked!
Having been played by several of his girlfriends, with Cynthia being the one who hit him the most, he had come to realize that aside from Aine there was no other love for him in the world, not from his lovers, not from his staff.
Let it go, Finn.
The voice was audible, yet untraceable. He exhaled deeply as he came to the realization that even his own soul was craving for a change of heart.
The knock on his door interrupted his thoughts. “Come in,” he said, looking at the door.
The door swung open and Mrs. Emer Dara hurried in, her bump stalling her movement. She was accompanied by Skye who seemed less worried. She held her notepad and quickly flipped back. She stopped mid-turn on finding what she was looking for.
She looked at Finn, her anxiety rising quickly. “I’m so sorry sir,” Emer began dramatically. “I forgot to remind you of your appointment with Mr. Ben Oswald by 10:00 am.” She paused to catch a breath. “I don’t know what I was thinking of…”
“It’s okay Emer. You can reschedule the meeting.”
Emer who couldn’t believe her ears found herself asking a question whose answer she already knew. “Sorry?”
“I said it’s okay. You can reschedule the meeting.”
Emer stood, transfixed. She expected anything but a kind response from Finn. That meeting was very important to Finn and it had taken her over two weeks to finally book an appointment. Still trying to figure out what just happened, she threw one look at Skye who was as surprised as she was.
“You can go back to your office,” Finn instructed.
“Thank you sir,” Emer replied and walked away, this time, in a more relaxed way.
Finn’s gaze shifted to Skye.
Not wanting the moment to get any awkward, she stated her mission immediately. “I brought the documents you requested.”
She placed the file in his outstretched hand.
“Thank you,” he said. “I’ll look at them later.”
Thank you. That sunk deep.
Skye smi
led. “I should get back to work, sir.”
“Sure,” Finn agreed.
Skye walked through the door, still wondering what good spirit had gotten into Finn.
Chapter Twelve
It was another cool Friday morning, one whose lunch time Skye was seriously looking forward to. As usual, Emer had gone for an antenatal check and wouldn’t be at work till the following Monday. A peep at the wall clock revealed that Skye had thirty minutes before noon, her lunch time. She looked at the corridor through the transparent office glass door for any sign of the staff that had gone in an hour earlier to meet Finn. Just like fifteen minutes earlier when she last peeped, there was no sign of them. She slumped back on her chair, determined to enjoy every second of her free time.
Steadily, her mind crawled back to her life within the past twenty-one years. She recalled with ease, the few times that her dad came around the house. Although she couldn’t remember what his face looked like, she cherished those rare moments. Then, she recalled his sudden absence and her mom’s initial unwillingness to tell her why he had stopped coming around. Gradually, her mind shifted to the summer party in her senior infant year and her meeting Aine. She recalled with relish how a single cupcake which she gave up for Aine at the party could bond them together in a lifelong friendship. She remembered having to change schools in her third class because of financial constraints. Luckily, that had not affected her friendship with Aine. Rather than being torn apart, they became closer as their parents took it upon themselves to make sure that they met often during the weekends.
Skye’s mind finally settled on the feeling of excitement she had any weekend her mom was working the night shift. For her, the night shift was synonymous with fun time at Finn’s mansion. The idea of spending some nights at Finn’s mansion was initially Aine’s idea. Skye was glad that she had come up with it. So, from watching her mom bring home her older boyfriends to spending time at Finn’s mansion, Skye had gotten used to having older males around her.
Skye went over to the refrigerator to pick a bottle of water. Despite the slightly cold weather, her throat craved cold water. She closed the refrigerator and returned to her seat. Each slow gulp she took brought back more memories of her time with Finn, memories that came with feelings she wasn’t sure she could deny anymore.
As her mind ventured into fantasies of what could be, the intercom rang.
“The meeting should be over by now,” she said as she hurried towards Emer’s desk.
Finn’s voice came alive from the other end. “Please get me the documents you’ve been working on.”
“Yes sir,” Skye replied courteously and waited for him to hang up. She picked up the documents and headed for Finn’s office.
“Here they are,” she said.
“Thank you,” he replied and began to flip through the pages of the documents. Suddenly, he stopped and looked at her. “This is quite impressive.”
Skye smiled. “Thank you.”
He smiled back. “You’re welcome.”
A pin drop silence followed during which Skye could feel her heartbeat increasing. Here she was face-to-face with the man she had been craving to see, a man because of whom she wished there would be no weekend. As she fixed her eyes on her grey Loboutin heels, she could sense a pair of blue eyes on her.
Finn’s voice broke the silence. “Could you please get me the file containing details of our last procurement from my cabinet?”
Skye found the courage to look up. “Yes sir.” With that, she set to remove that file.
Finn continued to flip through the pages of the last document Skye brought. Suddenly, one of the middle pages which Skye’s stapling pin had failed to hold flew out. The slow breeze within the room tossed it a bit far from Finn’s desk. Not wanting to bother Skye with picking it up for him, he went round to pick it.
After a little search, Skye found the file and turned round towards Finn’s desk. She saw the white sheet on the floor and Finn’s attempt to pick it up.
“Let me help you with that,” she said, bending to pick it up.
Her raised head brushed against Finn’s face as she held out the sheet to him. Her eyes caught his stare as her heartbeat increased. She found herself looking at his pink lips until everything became a blur.
She soon found her voice. “Here it is.” She held out the sheet of paper along with the file that she just brought out. Rather than look away as usual, she found herself staring deep into his blue eyes as if in search of a long-lost treasure. She could perceive his strong cologne as he towered above her. Something in her wanted to grab him, look deeper into his eyes and tell him the three worded sentence that best described the condition of her heart. But she didn’t; she just waited quietly.
Finn couldn’t help looking beyond the black beauty that stood in front of him. He could perceive the radiance of her soul. He held her shoulders, his eyes still fixed on hers. Gradually, he shifted his attention to her lips and without much thought, bent slightly to kiss her.
Their voices echoed simultaneously within the room. “I love you.”
The sobriety on their faces gave way to questioning looks as they each wondered who spoke first. Skye was sure that she heard Finn’s voice echo within hers. On the other hand, Finn could bet that he heard her voice in his.
“I love you,” Finn repeated, looking deeply into her eyes.
“I love you too.”
Suddenly, their passion sparked. Finn took the files from her and tossed them towards his desk. Then, he bent to kiss her again. She wrapped her arms around his neck and before she could draw in a single breathe, she found herself in his arms.
Finn hurried towards the couch and placed her gently on it, his lips still buried in hers. Their hands roamed each other’s bodies and before long, their clothes were in heaps thrown across the room. Finn’s finger traced Skye’s thighs, gently making its way into her wet pussy. He caressed her gently and listened to her moan softly into his ears.
“Are you ready?” he asked, seeing her increasing ecstasy.
“Yes.”
He gently patted her legs and lowered himself in. She wrapped her legs around his waist and guided him deep within. Finn began to thrust gently, driving his warmth within her.
There was something electrifying about his touch and kisses, something that sent Skye to increase her moans. It felt different and sweeter, much like their first time. They both relished the special feeling the moment brought, coupled with the extra sweetness of their unsheathed flesh fusing into each other.
Finn thrust deeper, allowing his dick to rub against her clit, an action that left Skye screaming his name. Finn continued steadily, his ears enjoying the melodies of her loud moans without much thought to whatever happened outside the soundproof walls of his office. At the peak of their pleasure, he whispered softly into her ears.
“Today marks the end of our contract. You’re no longer sexually bound to me.”
Skye nodded, unsure of whether to be happy or not. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” he replied and bent to kiss her again.
Soon, they lay on their sides to stare into each other’s eyes with Skye fondling the brown hair covering his chest.
Chapter Thirteen
Skye woke up to another wobble from her stomach. Barely a minute later, she hurried to the toilet and ended up throwing up what was left of the residue of last night’s dinner. With her face still held to the toilet, she waited behind in case the urge came again. After a moment of what seemed like a little stability, she dragged herself from the floor where she sat, with her face almost buried in the toilet. As soon as she turned to her room, she felt a wave of breeze brush against her face. At first, it seemed to bring the relief which she badly wanted. But after a while, she felt another wobble. Knowing what was coming her way next, she rushed back to the toilet.
The last week had seen her puking and feeling unusually feeble, a condition that aroused a lot of concern from her mom. She had repeatedly
reassured the older lady that it was just a slight fever that would soon go away. But right now, thinking of everything she was experiencing, she had reasons to doubt her assertions.
She rinsed her sore mouth with fresh water and dragged herself back to her bedroom. She sunk her waist into her soft mattress and clasped her hands together as she tried to recall the last time she had her period. Once more, she traced the date to five and a half weeks back. It dawned on her that she needed to put the pregnancy test kit she had bought from the pharmacy to use.
She pulled out her bedside drawer and allowed her hands to roam inside until she fumbled on the test kits. She brought them out and slowly walked back to the bathroom, occasionally holding onto surfaces to avoid falling down. She peed into her scooper and tore open the test kits. Gently, she immersed it in the amber colored liquid, careful not to pass the dip mark. She leaned against the wall to do the five-minute wait.
As she waited for the result, her mind raced to a number of factors, factors that metamorphosed into questions she knew she couldn’t avoid answering. What if the result came out positive? How would Finn take it?
She hissed on imagining the possibility of the news putting a strain on her relationship with Finn. She so much cherished what they had been able to build within the last two weeks and wasn’t ready to lose it on account of any unplanned pregnancy. What if he decided to treat her the way her dad had treated her mom? Her heart sank at the thought of being neglected by the one man she had fallen madly in love with. Something about Finn’s recent kind disposition convinced her that he wouldn’t do that to her.
Her mind went back to the test result that she needed to read. She reached out for the kit where she had left it and stared at the result. The result came out just as she had feared. She wrapped it up in the white pharmacy bag that it had come with and trashed it. She walked back to her bedroom and slumped on her bed.
