2#Unlikely Mates: BBW Shifter/Vampire Romance Page 3

by Charlene Hartnady

“One minute ago.” Elisabeth whispered knowing exactly what Becky really meant. “Your hair needs a finger brush but otherwise you’re good. I can’t believe that just happened.” Her eyes were wide. They also shone with…what looked distinctly like envy and maybe a little awe.

  “We’ll discuss it later.”

Although Elisabeth was still in her twenties, she was a nerdy schoolmistress type. Perfect for an admin assistant slash receptionist. She pushed back her glasses and smoothed her blouse. “I look forward to it.” With a wry smile she added, “Your next appoint will be here in ten. You are officially running late.”

“I know.” Becky huffed, glancing at the file. “Please follow me, Mrs. Stanley.”

  Chapter 3

“I solemnly swear not to tell anyone that you had sex with a really hot vampire.” For the first time since interviewing Elisabeth a year and a half ago, the dark haired beauty removed her glasses and looked at her with a riveted expression on her face. “Was it really as good as it sounded?” Her cheeks turned crimson, but her eyes sparkled mischievously.

“As my employee, I don’t think this line of conversation is appropriate.”

“Really?” Her receptionist slid her glasses back into place. “I heard you scream while you orgasmed, not”—she glanced at her watch—“six hours ago and you want to play the ‘I pay your salary card’?”

“Don’t make me freaking fire you.”

“You can’t, I haven’t done anything wrong. I don’t understand why talking to me about this is such a big deal.” She shook her head while she spoke.

“It’s not a big deal…” Becky sighed loudly. “I guess I just feel a little embarrassed. That should never have happened. I should’ve had more willpower. I work here…” She looked around her. It had taken her a long time to build up a thriving business. To have been able to afford to hire Elisabeth in the first place. “You’re my employee for god’s sake. I can’t believe I had all out noisy sex during my lunch break when anyone could’ve come in.”

Elisabeth shook her head harder. Her hair was pulled back into a severe bun at the back of her head. “Okay first off, I turned the sign on the door to ‘closed’. I would say that you’re welcome but it’s my job to make sure that things run smoothly around here and that includes none of your patients hearing you have what sounded like a spectacular orgasm.”

  Becky’s mouth fell open.

“Next…” Elisabeth went on. “If a hot guy like that walked in and threw me on my desk and ripped off my panties, I would have a hard time saying no…I can promise you that much.”

“How did you know he ripped off my panties?” Becky checked her coat pocket to make sure they were still there and felt a crumpled up ball.

“Oh my word…he actually ripped off your…” She clasped a hand over her gaping mouth.

Becky sighed. “I’m not sure that I want to spend the night with him.”

  “Why the hell not?”

“It was too explosive.” Like they were made for one another. Then again, it had been the same with Rushe so maybe explosive was how non humans fucked. The problem was that Ross had also said that he didn’t think one night was enough to cure him. Although he had been joking, she couldn’t help but to feel that he was being serious. Maybe she hadn’t been clear enough about this only being for one night. What if he wanted more?

Panic set in. She wasn’t ready for a relationship. Why did she keep meeting such perfect guys and exactly when she wasn’t looking? Breathe. Relax. Stay calm. Rushe would find himself a mate in a matter of days. He was so sweet, polite, sexy…he deserved to be happy. To be with someone that was ready to settle down. Why was it that the thought of that certain someone made her want to rip out the woman’s eyeballs with her bare fingers? She took a few deep breaths. Even if she didn’t like it, Rushe would be off limits all too soon and it was for the best for both of them.

Ross was another story all together.

“I don’t get it. The sex was so good that you don’t want to see him again? Shouldn’t it be the other way around?” Elisabeth pulled her bottom lip between her teeth.

“I think he might want more than just sex. I think he wants a relationship.” Becky pulled a face.

“And you aren’t interested because…” Elisabeth paused, “…he’s not human?”

Becky shook her head. “No, that’s not it. I don’t want any relationship right now. I need to concentrate on work.”

Elisabeth pouted for a few seconds. “Work isn’t going to keep you warm at night or grow old with you. Work is not an excuse.”

“This practice is only just starting to really pick up. I can’t afford to fall in love.”

“I don’t see how one has to do with the other. You can date this vampire and still work.” Elisabeth folded her arms.

“I promised myself that I would play the field a bit. I married too young and to the wrong person. I need to live a little.”

“And allowing yourself to fall in love would mean you’re…not living? You’re not making sense.” Elisabeth raised her eyebrows. “I would understand if you were some eighteen year old girl, but…”

“But what?” It was her turn to fold her arms. “I’m unmarried and reaching my late twenties, is that it?”

“No, that came out wrong. Age doesn’t matter, but your excuses for not wanting a relationship are weak.”

“I just want to have some fun. I don’t want the heartache and pain that comes when the relationship ends.”

Elisabeth nodded. “Okay, this is starting to make more sense. You were terribly hurt when your husband left you and don’t want a repeat.”

Becky had to laugh and Elisabeth looked at her with a confused expression. “Actually, I left him. He was the one that was hurt. I don’t think I’m capable of long-term. Non-humans mate for life. Can you imagine the mess I would leave when I left the poor male?” She sighed. “The problem is, I’m wired like all other women. Of course I want love and forever after, so I have no problem falling in love. It’s the staying in love that’s the problem. True love is not going to happen for me.”

“Okay…that’s a lot more complicated and I’m finally understanding. So these non-human guys are in it for life? Like as in they don’t do divorce?”

Becky nodded. “As in forever after.” She watched as Elisabeth’s face turned all dreamy.

“I can see that you like the idea of that. I happen to know for a fact that the shifter males are looking for mates…oh shit”—she covered her mouth—“I probably shouldn’t have said that. Please don’t tell anyone.”

“I’m a stay at home, nerdy bookworm. Relax.” Elisabeth licked her lips. “I won’t say anything. Thing is, I kind of really liked those vampires.”

“Don’t knock the shifters till you try them. You would be pleasantly surprised.” Becky bobbed her eyebrows.

“Oh my gosh. You’re talking from experience aren’t you?”

Becky held up a hand. “I don’t want to talk about it and I mean it this time. I need to order you around tomorrow and right now you already have too much on me.”

This whole thing had made her realize one thing, she really couldn’t meet with Ross. Just like Rushe, there was a danger that she might fall for the male. It would be all too easy. What if they did end up mating? Non-humans didn’t do divorce. She didn’t do forever, it left them in a bind.

Becky sighed. “I can’t go home.”

“You could come to my place.”

“I don’t want to intrude.” Becky shook her head, looking down at her attire. “If I wasn’t dressed like this I’d go grab some dinner and lay low for a while.” Ross wouldn’t wait around for hours. Non-humans didn’t have that kind of patience.

“I have my gym clothes in my bag?” Elisabeth raised her eyebrows.

“You’re at least two or three sizes smaller than me.”

“I like roomy clothes when I’m exercising so it’s drawstring sweatpants and a t-shirt. We could ca
tch some dinner and then swing by your place to make sure that the coast is clear. Are you sure you want to miss out though?”

No. “Yeah. It’s the right thing to do.” She could hear the disappointment in her own voice. “Okay, let’s do this. Thanks for the support.”

  Elisabeth nodded. “Sure thing.”

  ****

They decided on a diner just a few minutes’ walk from the clinic. At least no one would look at her strangely given her choice of attire. Or in this case, lack of choice. Becky walked in close behind Elisabeth, hoping that no one would notice that she wasn’t wearing a bra. Heels, sweatpants and a t-shirt, she was a hot mess as the saying went.

The waitress brought them menus and then their drinks. They both ordered salads and sat back to wait. Part of her wanted to just go to Ross but the scaredy pants part won out so she sipped her diet soda and tried not to think about all that she was missing out on.

“You’re second guessing yourself aren’t you?” Elisabeth asked.

“Hey, sexy.” Two guys sat at the booth alongside them. They were good looking, in a preppy kind of way and somewhere in their mid twenties. The guy that had spoken had his eyes fixed on Elisabeth. “You should let your hair down. Undo the top button of your blouse.” He licked his lips, his eyes dipping to her breasts. “Join us for a chat.” He winked suggestively.

“Not interested.” She rolled her eyes at Becky. “Where were we? Oh yeah, if you’ve changed your mind then we can get the salads to go. It’s only half past six so I’m sure he’ll still be there. Probably thinks you’re just running late.”

Becky shook her head. “I sent him a message after the second missed call. It was while you were in the bathroom before we left. I let him know that I’m not coming. I asked him to go.”

“We’ll join you ladies then?” It was the other guy this time, his eyes were on Becky.

  She so didn’t need this.

“You heard my friend, we’re not interested. Please leave us alone.” Becky said while looking back at Elisabeth.

“We’re snipers.” The bozo grinned wildly like the fact that he could shoot a gun would have her pulling down her panties. Then again, she didn’t have any panties to pull down. That fact annoyed her.

“Leave us alone.” Becky said, raising her voice for emphasis.

“Do you even know what a sniper is?” The other bozo asked.

“We know.” Elisabeth sighed. “We just don’t care.”

“Look,” the bozo that had been interested in Becky just seconds before narrowed his eyes at her. “We’re out of your league. We fuck chicks that are way hotter all the time. She”—he gestured at Elisabeth—“needs a bit of make-up and the carrot removed from her ass. And you only have one thing going for you, a descent pair of titties. Now get your fat ass over here and be thankful we’re even talking to you.”

“What did you just say to her?” A deep, familiar voice sounded and Ross stepped up to the table.

Both assholes jumped to their feet, the table rattled and their sodas spilled. “You heard me.” The bozo said while looking at Ross from head to toe and back. An arrogant smirk appeared on his face. He put one of his hands behind his back. “There is a saying, the bigger they are the harder they fall. I have a loaded gun and won’t hesitate to shoot you, motherfucker.”

Ross smiled, he folded his arms across his broad chest. “If, and it’s a very big if, you were quick enough to shoot me, you had better have silver bullets in that gun of yours. If you don’t, I will kill you straight afterwards with my bare hands. I would like to take a bet that you don’t actually even get a chance to get a bullet in me, silver or otherwise…”

Bozo’s face paled. “You’re one of them.”

Ross nodded once. “For the record, just because you are the type that fucks their mother, I would appreciate it if you didn’t assume the same about the rest of us.” Calm, cool, deadly. Becky almost had to strain to hear what Ross was saying.

Bozo’s face turned red and his jaw locked but he didn’t respond. “Come on, Simon, let’s get out of here. Those two aren’t worth it.”

“I really should beat you for your comments,” Griffin growled. “Would you like me to beat them?” he asked Elisabeth.

Her receptionist swallowed hard and shook her head.

The bozo actually cowered and whimpered as they scampered away from the table and left the diner.

“Thanks so much. Those guys were serious assholes,” Elisabeth said, her eyes on Griffin. He leaned forward and whispered something into her ear which made the normally together woman giggle.

“I hope you didn’t listen to anything he said.” Ross sat down next to her as he spoke, the space suddenly felt cramped. Especially when his thigh brushed against hers.

She shrugged, feeling the familiar pain. Her mother had put her on countless diets growing up. Curvy was her natural build. Becky ate healthy most of the time. She exercised regularly and actually loved herself just the way she was, but at times like these she felt like an awkward teenager again…her mother monitoring everything she ate, telling her that a tight, perfect ass was just around the corner. When she liked her booty just fine. Why the hell did skinny have to be considered beautiful? All women were beautiful regardless of their size. Why couldn’t her mother understand that?

“I can see that you are shaken.” Ross slid his arm around her waist. “Would you like me to go after them? I could…I don’t know…break an arm or a leg. I wouldn’t do major damage.”

Becky giggled while shaking her head. “No, please don’t bother. They’re not worth the effort.”

Ross threw her a half smile which heated her blood even in the middle of a busy diner. “It would be no effort whatsoever. Human bones crack easily.” He shrugged.

She shook her head, still giggling but stopped when his eyes turned serious. “What that jerk said to you was a load of bullshit.” He looked thoughtful for a few seconds. “Then again, most of it was bull. The part about you having really great breasts was accurate. Your ass is…” His eyes looked drugged for a few seconds and he made a pained noise. “Amazing…I have never seen better. I have a confession to make, I might just be in love with your ass, Becky.”

She laughed at his goofy expression. “Stop.” Becky hit his arm, which was rock freaking hard.

Ross shook his head, lowering his voice. “I’m serious. I love your ass. So much so that I want to hold onto it while I’m pounding into your…” He paused, a look of…hurt flashed across his face. “Why did you send me that message? Why don’t you think it’s a good idea to spend the night together?” She had to be mistaken about the look. They may have known each other for several months. Texted back and forth, but they’d only actually seen each other a handful of times. How could her not showing hurt him?

She groaned, putting a hand over her face. “I don’t want to talk about it. Just trust me, it’s not a good idea okay?”

He shook his head, his dark eyes zoned in on her. “No, it’s not okay. I don’t understand why we can’t—”

“I may develop feelings for you, Ross, and that wouldn’t be a good idea. Even worse, you might start feeling something for me.” She shook her head. “Trust me, you don’t want that.”

  Chapter 4

  Too late.

Ross was all in already. Especially now that he knew they were highly compatible. He couldn’t wait to have the human again. To find out everything about her.

Becky’s face was distraught, like developing feelings for him was the worst thing in the world. Then he had a thought that concerned him greatly. “Is it because I’m not human?”

“You’re the second person that’s asked me that today. Do I look like the type that would randomly discriminate like that? Did a swastika tattoo suddenly appear on my forehead?”

  “A what?” Ross frowned.

“It’s a German symbol…never mind. Do you really think I would have let you fuck me earlier if I had a problem with non-humans? Wait just a
minute.” She held up a hand. “How did you find us?”

He had to smile. “You keep forgetting that I am not a human. You left a trail even a deaf, dumb and blind vampire could find.” Ross sighed. “Back to your earlier comment. You may have let me fuck you but that doesn’t mean anything. Many human females, including mated ones, want us to rut them. Not that we are allowed to generally mate humans that is. Anyway, it does not mean that they want us to be with them.”

“Okay, you have a point, but no I don’t have a problem with you being a vampire.” Her brow wrinkled in the cutest little frown. “Wait…that’s not entirely true.”

His heart rate kicked up a gear. “What do you mean?”

The server brought them their salads. When her eyes landed on him, they looked like they would pop out of her skull. Thankfully they moved to Griffin, who sat on the opposite side of the booth with the other human. But then they settled back on him, looking like they were there to stay. “Can I get you gentlemen something to eat and drink?” She ended on a giggle.

“We are not gentlem—” Ross started to correct the server but Becky cut him off.

“Two cokes and nothing to eat.” Becky ordered for them which was fine with him because he wouldn’t know what to choose anyways. His female’s mouth pulled into a tight line. “Thank you,” she added, sounding sarcastic.

The server didn’t leave, she was still staring down at him. Ross knew that look well, when a female looked at him in that way it meant that she wanted to rut.

“Um…hey…” Becky clicked her fingers. “You can go now.”

Ignoring his female, the server addressed him. “I don’t usually do this, but can I give you my number?” Her cheeks turned crimson and her pulse raced.

His female was getting upset, which irritated him. Ross had to work to stay cordial. “No”—he cleared his throat—“I’m not interested. I already have a female.” He tightened his grip on Becky who leaned back into him. It made him feel good since her return of affection meant that she was showing possession.
