Lance exhaled. He could feel her hesitation. He backed out and drove away slowly, waving at his neighbors as he headed towards the highway. He reached over and grabbed Fin’s hand and held it tight, then checked Isla in his rear-view mirror. He was happy to go. He had children to care for. A wife to love and cherish. Home could be anywhere. It could be inside a cardboard box for all Lance cared. As long as they were together, their lives would be a real-life fairytale. And he could only hope Fin felt the same. The fact that he didn’t know for certain was maddening. He still didn’t know her completely. He had no knowledge of her species. And there was nothing to research. No one to ask. They were embarking on a life together with uncertainties, and hoping for the best. He still didn’t know if something in her actually required the water. She was, after all, a mermaid.
