Hitler's Valkyrie Page 33

by David R L Litchfield

Mitford, Jessica, Hons and Rebels, Phoenix, 2003 (first published 1960). Mildly critical of her family’s political sympathies, it was still authorised by all the surviving members of the family. Thus it contains few surprises and many omissions.

Mosley, Charlotte (ed.), The Mitfords, Letters Between Six Sisters, Fourth Estate, 2007. Unsurprising gaps in the letters, particularly those from Unity during her period in Germany.

Murphy, Sophie, The Mitford Family Album, Sidgwick and Jackson, 1985 (out of print). Murphy is the younger daughter of Deborah Mitford and the 11th Duke of Devonshire. She not only mentions Unity’s interest in SS officers but also names Eric Widemann, a ‘part-time’ SS officer, as Unity’s steady boyfriend for several years. She also mentions one of Hitler’s adjutants, Stadelmann, as another of her lovers.

Petropoulos, Jonathan, Royals and the Reich, OUP, 2006.

Pryce-Jones, David, Unity Mitford – A Quest, Weidenfeld, 1976 (new edition 1995). The only other biography of Unity. Apparently due to his family connections with the Mitfords, Pryce-Jones compromised himself by admitting to having failed to include certain details that he believed, with admirable consideration capable of ‘causing distress or embarrassment’. The surviving Mitfords were still upset by the book, which is now out of print.

Theweleit, Klaus, Male Fantasies, Polity Press, 1977.

  SOURCES

Sources include my mother, who gained intimate knowledge of the Mitfords’ ‘goings-on’ while her father was practising as a doctor in Burford; my friend Baroness Gaby Bentinck whose German industrialist family, the Thyssens, owned Rechnitz Castle, next door to Almasy Castle where Unity spent a great deal of time with her aristocratic Austrian Nazi lover. Gaby also married a Dutch diplomat called Baron Adolphe Bentinck, whose ambassadorial friends passed on yet more details to both her and her companion, Marie-France Railey. My grandmother, Milly Howard-Brown (first married to Frederick Litchfield, and remarried a Jewish Hungarian playboy who also went under the name Count von Schossberger), was also witness to Unity’s extraordinary behaviour by her involvement with the Almasy crowd in pre-war Vienna, Munich and Venice. She spent the war years in South Africa, returning to spend the rest of her life in Nice, on the Cote d’Azure; every August being spent in England.
