“It’s a sad story, and I don’t want to remember my grandmother as a victim,” Matt announced. “She was a kind and honest woman, who was brave and stronger than she thought. She was prepared to give up everything in her life to be with the man she loved, and when she found out she was pregnant, she was ready to face life as a young unwed mother with only her sister to help her. That’s brave.”

“And in the end, when all her other options had been taken away from her, she did what she needed to do for her child,” I added.

Matt slid his hand over to cover mine. “Thank you, Kay. Thank you for being a nosy busybody and bringing all this to light. Now I know just how brave my grandmother really was, and what she was willing to sacrifice for my mom.”

And now I had a beautiful piece of dining room furniture without a ghost, and the satisfaction that my nosy busybody self had helped a restless spirit find peace. I pulled my hand out from under Matt’s and away from the grave stone, smiling up at him. “Want to grab a quick cup of coffee before I have to go to work?”

He smiled back. “Absolutely. And no matter what you say, I’m calling it a date.”
