The nightmares of the past had ended, and the store unlocked itself, releasing me to go about my life. I could've gone to college, or found employment somewhere else in some other field, but I decided on my own to return to the store and reinvent the product. It was in me, not the curse, but the need to make shoes, and I embraced my emerging talents in a big way.
Restored to its original, old-fashioned charm, the sales floor was clean and welcoming. No more mass-produced sneakers or rotting shelves―only the finest in custom-made footwear was on display. I gave a friendly smile and warm handshake to the woman waiting for my services. My reputation was building, despite the fact that I was still learning the handed-down trade. “Welcome to Soles,” I said. “Do you have a design in mind?”
The window displays were thoughtfully laid out with my best creations, which were very different than what Jonathan and William had made back in their day.
“I do,” she responded as Peggy took her coat. Together we escorted the client into the stockroom. “Oh, it smells so nice in here.” The client took a long whiff of the leather and suede hanging from the walls.
She sat on the fitting chair. The old relic had been destroyed, but I'd bought a new one with a modern design that's also ergonomically correct. Peggy removed the client's shoes and I took a seat on the cushioned stool, adjusting myself. “Be careful,” she warned. “I'm ticklish.”
A light buzz filled the air and the customer looked around curiously. “What's that sound?”
“The hum? Old buildings do that, I'm told. Nothing to worry about.” I smiled reassuringly, keeping my family's secret. I'd designed a quirky pair a few days ago that were particularly animated, and although it was slightly alarming, no one needed to know what's inherent in their soles. It's what makes my brand of shoes special, and I wouldn't trade that for anything in the world.
