First, Imran Khan. Although trying to pin him down proved nearly as challenging as was descending into the briar patch of Pakistani politics, he turned out to be a patient and generous interviewee. Reflecting the rather mobile nature of his life, we spoke by phone over a nine-month period when Imran was variously in London, Brussels, Lahore, Islamabad and aboard an Amtrak sleeper train somewhere on America’s eastern seaboard. He made no conditions and did not ask for advance approval of the manuscript, for which I’m grateful. Although one or two of his long-time opponents declined the offer to speak, occasionally after venting at me, the research process generally was productive and tantrum-free. Writing this book after one on Roman Polanski was like drinking a glass of sparkling mineral water after gorging on heavily salted nuts. I only wish I could blame someone listed below for the shortcomings of the text. They are mine alone.
