A Question of Hope Page 15

by Lynn Landes

“Come play, Daddy,” they call and Magdalaine sits and watches her boys play. She runs a hand over her small bump.

“Welcome to the family little one. You’re going to be so loved.” She sighs and jumps when her brother marches over to sit next to her.

“Jack how are you?” she nudges him and stares at the handsome young man beside her.

He frowns, “I have news Mag’s.” His deep voice startles her for a moment. It hard to see him as a man, when she remembers the baby.

“Care to share it?” she asks.

“I got it,” he grins at her surprised look.

“What?!” she shouts, and he laughs as she throws her arms around his shoulders and hugs him close. “Jack, I’m so proud of you!”

“Thanks, Mag’s. I couldn’t have done it without your help. Apprenticing in the kitchen at the largest Hotel in Little Falls is one thing, but what if I fail. It’s Paris, Magdalaine,” he drops his head and looks at his hands.

She grips it and squeezes gently. “I know exactly how you feel, Jack. I left at sixteen for Boston. It was terrifying, but so exciting too. The things you will be able to see, and experience Jack can’t be taught. They have to be experienced. You were born to do this you just have to have hope.” She glances at her boys playing with Shep and she smiles as she quotes Jeremiah 29:11.

“I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. They are plans for peace, not disaster, plans to give you a future filled with hope.”

Jacks sits up taller, “I like the sound of the Mag’s, thank you,” he presses a kiss to her head.

  “No problem.”

“Just one. Now I have to tell Mom and Dad,” he quips.

“Uncle Jack, come play!” the boys shout and run over to pull him into the grass. Shep shoves a glove at him and sits next to his wife.

“Wanna sneak away before anyone notices?” he asks pulling her to her feet.

“I’d go anywhere with you, Mr. Millard.”

Laughter floats around them as the door closes.

  The End.

  Before you go!
