Desperate Call (New Breed Novels Book 5) Page 3

Pax’s body jerked when James followed up with special attention to the underside of his cock before he drew him deep into his throat.

“Fuck,” Pax bit out as the heat and suction of James’s wet mouth hit his arousal. The feeling was one of total possession and he never wanted it to end. When he looked down and caught sight of the male’s head bobbing up and down over him, he nearly lost it right then. And the male’s moans each time he drew him in were hot as hell. He tried to look away to collect himself, but watching James take him after wanting him for so long wasn’t something Pax wanted to miss. He slid his hand behind the male’s head and moved his hips, trying to get more of that piercing on his shaft. When they made eye contact, James took his arm and brought him upright before moving to the floor and kneeling down.

“Let me take you down here.”

Pax’s body obeyed before his brain even had time to catch up. He stood in front of James looking down into his glowing eyes as the male took hold of his prick and pressed his piercing gently into the tip. Pax’s head fell back and he exhaled with a groan at the delicious sensation. James drew him back into the heat of his mouth, running his tongue up and down his shaft while he cupped his balls. Pax buried his hands in the male’s thick auburn waves and James dug his hands into Pax’s ass, urging him to take control. A low growl rumbled up from Pax’s chest as his hips took over. James extended his tongue so that every stroke hit that little metal ball. Pax’s hips pumped wildly, his hands holding James’s head in place. His shouts grew louder with every thrust, his abs seizing up, balls tightening. He was just teetering…

“James!” Pax came in a burst of energy so strong he felt it all over his body. His arousal kicked hard in James’s mouth as the male sucked out wave after wave of his release. Pax pitched slightly forward and he felt the brother’s hands take hold of his hips and steady him. James licked a few wayward drops from his stomach and thighs, which, God help him, was making Pax hard again.

When James stood up, he took him by the chin and kissed him tenderly. “Mmm. You and that tongue are going to be the death of me.”

“No worries. I’ll just take the piercing out next time.” James kicked off his jeans and started to crawl under the duvet.

“Don’t you fucking dare.” Pax flipped him over and tickled him until he was a ball of giggles.

“Stop! I give up, I give up.”

“That’s what you get for being fresh.”

They collapsed onto the bed. James lay on his side, lazily stroking the line of hair that ran down Pax’s stomach.

Pax leaned back against the pillows. “Should I trim that? Neaten it up a little?”

  James shook his head. “Nope.”

Pax gently stroked James’s earlobe. “Your plugs healed up, but your original piercings came back? How is that even possible?”

“You know, I’m not sure. Maybe because I had them before my second transition?” James yawned.

“I’m not sorry to see those gone. Guess I’m a bit old school. But, you know, you’d look great with some really nice diamond studs.”

  “Really?”

“Definitely.” Pax turned on his side, drawing James in to spoon. He lay awake, listening to James’s breathing even out before falling blissfully asleep.

  CHAPTER FOUR

Troy pulled on his boots and looked at the time. Poking his head into the bathroom to check on his mate, he said, “All set, babe? We only have a few minutes.”

“Yeah, let’s go. I don’t want to keep Helen waiting.” Evy grabbed her phone as they headed for the door.

He took her hand and they walked down the back stairs to the compound. “Do you have a lunch appointment with her this week?”

“No, I think that if we have an appointment as a couple, then she and I skip our weekly lunch.”

“That makes sense.” Man, he sucked at small talk. Troy didn’t bother to check on his female’s emotional status. He could see it in her face and hear it in her voice. She was worried about the Goddess and there was very little he could do to keep her mind off it. She seemed to feel her absence as powerfully as she felt her presence. It had to be painful as all hell.

They walked into the ward just as Helen came out from her office. “Hi, Thomsens. Come on in. Let’s get your weight, Evy. How have you been feeling?”

Evy stepped on the scale. “Okay.”

  “How’s the nausea?”

“Still much better with the tea.”

Helen put her arm behind Evy’s shoulders. “Excellent. Let’s have a seat in my office. I don’t need an ultrasound yet.”

The three of them filed into Helen’s office and sat down. “So, I’ve been a little concerned about your weight, Evy, and the scale pretty much confirmed it. Your weight hasn’t climbed the way I expected after the nausea abated. I’m sure some of it has to do with everything that’s going on right now, but you need to eat more at meals. Troy, maybe you could make her a milkshake every day. Whatever her favorite is.”

“Is it that low?” Evy asked.

“No, not necessarily. You’re petite, and you’ll probably be all baby anyway. But, using your power takes a lot of energy. I don’t want us to get to a point where I have to ask you to stop.”

Out of nowhere, Evy looked panic stricken. “No. I can’t stop using it.”

“Ev.” A wall of stress slammed into Troy and he reacted almost defensively by bringing it under control. Holy shit. He hoped to hell that wasn’t her baseline.

“See, that’s what I’m worried about. It’s fine to use your power. You should. But I need you to eat. During any meal with Ana, I want you to look at her plate. She’s very disciplined. Your body needs extra calories, not unlike a New Breed’s does. Even just gleaming burns a lot. We don’t want an underweight baby, or a condition like toxemia.”

  “What’s toxemia?” Evy asked.

“It’s one of several issues we could have if you don’t stick to your diet and keep your stress level down. This baby is a whole new thing for us. We don’t know what that means yet, but you need to take care of yourself, Seer or not.”

Troy nodded. “We’ll make sure she does, Helen.”

The female took Evy’s hands. “I’m not saying this to scare you. I just want you to understand that you need to be careful. We’re in uncharted waters here. Maybe being the Seer means you don’t need those milkshakes. But maybe it does. So, what do you say, a milkshake once a day?”

Evy nodded. “A milkshake a day. And I’ll eat more at meals. I promise.”

Helen winked and smiled. “Don’t forget you eat at the same table as your doctor. On that note, I’ll see you two at dinner.”

Evy walked back through the ward with Troy. They stopped in front of the elevator and he hit the button.

He kissed her forehead. “Don’t look so worried, Ev. You’re doin’ a great job. Helen just wants to make sure that with everything goin’ on, we don’t overlook things.”

She nodded. “Yeah, I know. You’re right.”

“Listen, X and I won’t be more than an hour with the car. How ’bout I pick you up after for a walk in the garden? There’s some new flowers out.”

  She smiled. “That’s sounds good.”

The elevator opened and she stepped inside. Troy held the door and gave her a quick kiss. “See ya in a bit.”

She stepped off the elevator, into the game room and felt for anyone nearby. When she didn’t sense anyone, she let the tears clouding her eyes fall. She was barely eight weeks along and already screwing it up. She thought back to the night she thought she’d conceived. The night her Goddess had allowed her to share her divine energy with Troy as they made love. Had Akina played some part in it? Had she wanted her to become pregnant? Evy paced the length of the pool table and shook her head. That didn’t make any sense. What possible reason could she have? Besides, she would have said something while she was there at the mansion. Right? Shit. She was gonna lose her ever-loving mind. She needed Ana. Now.
/>   She swept the upstairs. Ana was alone in her room. She gleamed, materializing in the bedroom by the window.

Ana was on the bed using her laptop with the hummingbird nagual perched on her shoulder. “Yes?”

Evy blew an unruly lock of dark hair from her face. “How did you know?”

“Girl, you’re never going to sneak up on a New Breed packing that kind of k’ul.” She looked up from her work. “What’s wrong?”

“Oh, nothing. I’m just having a nervous breakdown.”

Ana patted the bed next to her. “Come tell Doctor Ana all about it.”

She sat down next to her friend. “I’m going to be a horrible mother, aren’t I?”

“Well, look on the bright side. You can’t possibly be worse than Mommie Dearest.”

  “Joan Crawford?”

Ana shot her a look from the corner of her eye. “Victrixa. I’d say genocide beats a wire hanger, wouldn’t you?”

Evy took a deep breath, and let it out. “I think maybe the Goddess had something to do with me getting pregnant.”

  “What makes you say that?”

“I dunno. It just happened so fast. And there was this one night where—”

Ana put up her hands. “Whoa. TMI.”

Evy arched a brow before continuing. “One night just after we were mated, she allowed us to feel her essence. Love, beauty, sensuality. It’s the only time it’s ever happened and it was right around the time of conception.”

“Okay. First of all, you were newly mated. So, basically, we would’ve needed a crow bar to separate you two. But let’s say she did help you conceive. She’s the Goddess of Love. Would it really be so odd if she did help things along?”

Evy shrugged. “No, I guess not.”

“And I’m sure if she had somehow intervened, she would have told you…right?”

“Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. Maybe I just miss her. Her guidance especially.”

Ana sighed. “I know it can’t be easy trying to figure it all out on your own.”

“I definitely feel as though there’s a whole other side to our fight. And my intuition tells me that you’re the one who’ll lead us there.”

Ana closed her laptop and pushed it aside. “Ugh. No more shop talk. What’s all this terrible mother crap about?”

“Well, we saw Helen this morning and she said my weight is low. I have to eat more and drink a shake every day. You know, the whole power uses “calories” thing. She told me to watch what you eat at meals.”

“I’m sorry, but did your doctor just tell you to pack on the calories? Why is this bad?”

Evy put her head on Ana’s shoulder. “I dunno. I guess you’re right.”

“Damn straight. You just got green lighted to eat eggs benedict with me every morning. It’s the dream. No more muesli. So quit your bitchin dot com.”

They laughed until Evy’s sides hurt.

James opened his eyes to no sun whatsoever in the room. No wonder he’d slept so long. What time was it? He heard a keyboard next to him and realized he was still in Pax’s room down in the compound. He smiled to himself as the events of the night before came flooding back. His face flushed.

“You’re awake.” Pax leaned down and kissed his forehead.

  “Is it late?”

  “A little after ten.”

  “Shit, breakfast. I’m sorry.”

“No worries. We still have time if you feel like going.”

James looked over at the screen. Pax was reading a newspaper in Spanish. “Your laptop still works?”

“Yep. Thanks to the genius that is X.”

“Do you read that every day?” James asked.

“Most days. It’s a daily from home. Hey, isn’t your birthday in a couple of days?”

“Yeah, actually. I totally forgot about it.”

Pax smiled. “Nineteen. What do you want for your birthday, old man?”

  “Nah, it’s okay. I don’t need anything.”

The male slowly turned his head. “Are you seriously trying to get away with not getting a birthday gift?”

  “Is that even possible?”

  “Nope.”

Pax moved his laptop to the bedside table and lay down next to him. Their feet intertwined and James closed his eyes for a moment as Pax ran his hand along his chest. Best freaking way to wake up ever.

“Maybe just a movie with Dies and Helen or something?”

“We can do that. But that’s not a gift.” The male propped himself up on his elbow and ran his hand through James’s hair. “There must be hundreds of guys going bald in Boston this very moment, and you have enough hair for all of them.”

  “Pax?”

  “Hmm?”

“Have you ever…you know?” James rolled his eyes. He sounded like he was in junior high.

  “Gone heli-skiing?”

  James shot him a look.

  “Bottomed?”

James nodded and his face flushed. Again.

“Just with Luis.” He put his cool hand against James’s red cheek. “God, you’re cute.”

  “Did you like it?”

“Well, I didn’t hate it. The closeness was really great at the time. I’m not sure it’s something I’m drawn to naturally. I’m more of a top guy. You know, looking back now, I think there were probably expectations there. Hey, you know there aren’t any here, though, right?”

James nodded and bit a nail.

Pax took his hand and gently kissed his finger. “None of that. The thing is, there are a lot of ways for gays to express love. Everyone is different. Some prefer to top. Others like to bottom. Some like to do both. And a lot of couples don’t even like anal sex. It’s all good.”

Okay. So that was helpful. Worth the total embarrassment, he supposed. Being a gay male shifter who had kissed exactly one guy before Pax, he had no freaking clue about gay culture. Zip.

Pax scrunched up his brow. “Are you thinking you might want to try it?”

He looked up into his camzah’s soft brown eyes. “With you, yeah. With you, I think I would.”

Pax leaned down and kissed him gently. “I think that can be arranged.”

One of their phones went off and James sat up. Pax’s cell was vibrating along the table.

  “Would you grab that?”

James picked it up just in time to save it from taking a nose dive and read the text message. “It’s just Diesel. He wants to borrow your guitar.”

Pax kissed his shoulder. “Like that’s gonna happen. He still owes me a string. He can fuck off.”

James typed a message and hit send.

  “What’d you write?”

“Do not disturb. Love, James. And then a couple of those heart thingies.”

The two of them cracked up until they were literally leaning on one another for support. James had just caught his breath when Pax’s phone went off again.

Pax grinned. “I can’t wait to hear this.”

James looked at the screen. “Oh, it’s just your calendar. It’s Jesse’s birthday today? I didn’t know his was so close to mine.” He turned back to Pax and froze. The male’s jaw was clenched tight; his eyes glowing faint amber. Nice one, asshole. With his own brother being so much older, he was practically an only child, but that was hardly an excuse to be an insensitive dick. Of course Pax missed his younger brother. James reached out for him. “Come here.”

Pax laid his head against his shoulder.

James gently ran his hand along the male’s stubble. “I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking.”

“It’s not your fault. For some reason Jess has been on my mind a lot lately. Maybe it’s just having Dimitri and Viktor around. I’m not a big Viktor fan. Frankly, I don’t even know how he and D can be cut from the same DNA. But just seeing them around. You know?”

“When was the last time you saw Jesse?”

“When I was thrown out the first time for becoming a shifter, the Admiral took me back.”

  “The Admiral?”
>
“Yeah. That’s what Jess and I called our father. It’s what he was…his rank in the Navy. He was all duty and respect and rules. When I came out to be with Luis, he kicked me out for good. I told Jess he shouldn’t try to contact me. He was only fifteen. Staying in touch with me after I came out was a really bad idea. I was sure our father would never be able to overlook it. So, we didn’t see each other for three or four years. Right after I went through the second transition, I broke the rules by going back to see him one last time. I just wanted to let him know I’d be okay.”

James ran his hand up and down the male’s powerful arm. “Of course you did. Can’t you see him at all? I mean, you can clone.”

“I’ve thought about it a lot. I’m just not sure it’s a smart idea. And if Reyn caught me, Mary would be serving Pax filet for weeks. Anyway, we’ll see.” He stretched. “I shouldn’t have mentioned food. Wanna try to make breakfast?”

“Actually, yeah. I could use some coffee.”

“Maybe you should wait ’til your birthday. You don’t want it to stunt your growth.” Pax grinned.

“Oh, six-five isn’t tall enough? Because you’re six-six and I thought we lined up pretty perfectly last night.”

  Pax’s eyes went bright amber.

Bingo. He gave the brother a wise ass grin.

“Fucking A right we did.” Pax took him by the side of the neck and drew him into a searing kiss.

James could feel his whole body wake up at the contact and felt the male’s absence just as keenly when he broke it off. Oh. Oxygen. Right. He couldn’t seem to remember what they’d been talking about. “Uh, what was it we were going to do?”

  “Shower?”
