Chapter One
Tanya
So much for the story of the century.
Tanya made an annoyed noise in her throat as her foot sank into yet another mud hole. She yanked it out, groaning as her shoe stayed behind–again. She pulled it out and stomped another few paces until her feet rested on hard ground. There, she sat on a fallen branch and scraped off as much of the mud off her feet as possible before shoving her feet into her shoes again.
The darkness closed around her, making the forest even creepier than it had been before the sun went down. Animals called to one another in the thick foliage, and not for the first time Tanya regretted her decision to come out here.
It had all started when the head editor of the newspaper she worked for told her that she'd never make it as a reporter. She'd been on the job for a whole two months and he was already telling her that she was worthless.
Well, not entirely.
A scowl crossed her face as she remembered how he told her she'd never make it–unless he helped her out a little. Her nostrils flared. The suggestion had been backed up with one of his hands on her breast. She would have liked to kick his ass for that, but it was a new job and she had bills to pay. If she messed up this one, it would follow her all over the newspaper world. So, she had declined as politely as she could. Apparently not politely enough, because since then he had refused to give her anything other than coffee runs, despite her qualifications.
Today, however, he had given her an assignment, and it was a doozy.
Nobody knew much about the wolf packs that owned over five thousand square acres up in the mountains next to the town, but there was supposed to be some sort of special ceremony happening somewhere in the forest tonight. She was sent to find out what it was.
Tanya knew that if she didn't come back with her story, she'd be fired. Her boss was expecting her to fail, it was the reason he'd given her the assignment. She had looked him square in the eye and told him she was going to get this story. And she had every intention of doing so.
Unfortunately, her car had broken down and now she was utterly lost. Her stupid cellphone had fallen out of her pocket somewhere near the road. Luckily the sky was clear and she was able to find the North Star to help direct her out of the forest. If she kept heading east, then she would eventually hit the road.
With a sigh, she pulled herself to her feet again. She'd hit a muddy patch, but it seemed to be over, and she wanted to get back to civilization before dawn. Maybe if she showed up at work in this state, the editor would give her a break and at least let her find a new job before he fired her.
She hadn't gone much further when she was suddenly out of the trees. The full moon shone down around her, revealing a circle of standing stones. Her eyes widened as she glanced around. Each of the stones had a different design carved into it, and the area inside looked well-worn, trampled hard and empty of any vegetation. Was this a meeting place that the wolves frequented?
The sound of snarling answered her. She looked up to find three huge figures emerge from between the stones. The first thing she noticed was the teeth. All three of them had massive jaws with lips pulled back over teeth the size of steak knives. It was also the last thing she noticed because she wasn't sticking around to find out more.
Tanya spun on her heel and fled. An ear-splitting howl behind her made her stumble. Her heart jumped to her throat, exhaustion forgotten as adrenaline flooded her system. Bushes whipped into her face and she darted in a zig-zag pattern. It didn't help. Seconds later, a huge paw wrapped around her waist and she crashed down. Her scream split the air, causing the wolf to jerk back. She spun onto her back and grabbed its snarling muzzle, spitting curses and swears.
"If you hurt me, the whole county will be down on you with pitchforks and torches!" she screamed.
The wolf dropped over her. The crushing weight drove the air from her lungs. Apparently, it was exactly what the wolf wanted because it backed off as soon as she stopped screaming. The gaping mouth closed around her middle and it picked her up.
Tanya held herself limp as they trotted through the forest, surprised at how gently the wolf carried her. Or at least, it wasn't crushing her in its jaws. It didn't seem to care if her head banged into passing trees, though. If it wanted her dead, she would be. So, she just needed to figure out what to do from here–how to get away.
Or, maybe, she could trust that the wolf didn't want to kill her, and instead let it take her back to civilization. Wolves didn't like humans in their territory, maybe they'd just drive her out and fine her or something. That would be something she could use. A traveler lost in the woods set on by wolves. Her editor couldn't say no to that.
"You can put me down now," she said hesitantly. "I'm not going to run away again."
The wolf growled, but dropped her. Tanya scrambled to her feet, shooting the wolf a dirty look as she inspected the tears in her shirt. It winked at her. Actually winked.
The problem with making a gripping tale out of this adventure was that she didn't want to come in here and write more of the bigoted drivel that filled the media when it came to wolves. They were dangerous brutes, according to the news. More animal than human, unable to control their lust and passion. Tanya's heart kicked up a few notches as she remembered all the stories she had read about the wolves being insanely lustful for human women.
But wasn’t that the first step in justifying oppression? Make the oppressed out to be dangerous monsters that will rape and murder you if you don't steal their land and freedom? She snorted, trying to push aside her irrational fears. Wolves were just like everybody else, and she aimed to prove it. If she could get an interview with one of the alphas it would help her case even more.
The wolf nudged her and she started walking. Another wolf came out of the darkness and trotted beside them. The first one pulled back his lips–she could see that it was a 'him' in a very obvious way that had her blushing–but didn't make a noise. Together they escorted her back to the standing stones. A half dozen young women stood there, completely naked. Two old women were also there, and the two that had escorted her stepped back.
There was a crackin
g and popping noise. Tanya watched in fascination as the two wolves changed before her eyes. They slipped smoothly into human forms. Her eyes widened. Both were tall, with massive shoulders. Dear Lord, all those muscles! Thick, roped biceps. Sculpted abs. She forgot that she was supposed to be nervous, too busy ogling the two men. One of them cleared his throat and turned aside, but the other grinned at her and thrust out his hips towards her.
Blood rushed to Tanya's face and she quickly turned away. Her hands twisted. She first looked at the women, then the sky. Ugh. This was a terrible, terrible situation. Although if the women weren't here it would be oddly similar to one of her favorite fantasies…
Mind out of the gutter, she reminded herself.
"I take it that you will spread word to the packs?" the man on her left said. He had a deep voice, like rich dark chocolate. Mmmmm. Chocolate. That was what she was hungry for. Nothing else…
"We will settle this," the other man said. "I want no protests."
The women scowled, but his words had Tanya's heart thumping again. "Settle… what? What are you going to do to me?"
The one to her left grinned, licking his lips. "If I have my way? I'll be eating you up and you'll love every second of it."
The other man snarled. "Show some respect, Nathan. You are a crass, arrogant—"
"Yeah, yeah, you hate me. What's new?"
The first one growled, stepping closer to the second while his hands clenched into fists. No way–they weren't going to fight, were they? Tanya glanced around wildly, but all the women were giving her dagger-eyes, so she didn't think there would be help coming from them.
"The human doesn't know what she stumbled into. There will be no talk of eating her until she understands." The man to her right spoke with such authority that she expected the second wolf to drop in submission and agree, but Mr. Chocolate Voice–Nathan–only laughed. The first growled again, then turned to Tanya. "My car is waiting for us."
It didn't exactly seem like an invitation, but Tanya nodded anyway. She kept quiet as the wolf put an arm around her, not quite touching her, and led her away. They walked for about fifteen minutes before they came to a road, and the three of them slipped into an honest-to-goodness limousine. Wolf number one pulled a blanket over his lap, but wolf number two let it all hang out freely. Tanya tried not to stare.
"So… are you taking me back to town?" she asked hesitantly.
"No." Wolf one shook his head. "My name is Gabriel. I'm—"
"One of the alphas." Tanya nodded. She recognized him. "I read about you. Which means you are…?"
"Nathan. Another alpha," Wolf Two said with a grin. "So… are you really here by accident, or did you hear about the ceremony and decide you wanted to be a wolf queen?"
"A…" Tanya had trouble breathing. "What now?"
Gabriel gave Nathan an annoyed glare. "You interrupted a ceremony to decide on who will be the alpha of our combined packs. The woman that stepped into the stones first was to be the alpha's mate, and choose which of us she wanted. You were the first woman to enter the stones, so it's you. You'll need to choose Nathan or me as your mate within the next two months."
What the hell? Tanya's jaw dropped. She usually wasn't one to swear–much–but her mind was filled with all sorts of language that would have her mother dying of shock if she was still alive. "I… choose… to mate?"
Nathan yawned widely and pushed out his hips. "Course, when I get you pregnant it'll be an easier choice, huh?"
"Nobody's getting pregnant!" Tanya pressed herself back away from him. "No way. Na-uh. I don't even know you and I am not the type of girl to go sleeping around. No. No pregnancy. I'm certainly not going to sleep with you, and that's final."
Nathan grinned at her. "Oh, you'll change your mind."
"I will not! I never change my mind about anything. So, you can wipe that dirty smirk off your face, because it's not happening. Never in a million years. Now, you are going to take me back to town or I'll have you all arrested for kidnapping!"
Gabriel looked put out, but didn't reply. Nathan continued to chuckle as they drove along, and Tanya forced herself into a smaller space as she stared out the tinted window into the darkness beyond. Her heart sunk. There was no way she was finding her way out of this maze of a mountain road. And… she snuck a look at Nathan again, and the impressive bulge under the blanket on Gabriel's lap… she had an uncomfortable feeling that Nathan was right. Her mind was still reeling, uncertain as to what they really wanted, but if they started trying to seduce her, would she say no?
This was the epitome of her favorite fantasies, two men lusting for her, claiming her. She was aware she wasn't a classic beauty. Though she had a great hourglass figure and her breasts were nicely sized in comparison to the rest of her, she was pretty much round everywhere. Thick waist, thick thighs, her butt a little too droopy. Usually, the guys that showed interest were the skeevy type, like her editor.
She wasn't sure how long they drove but they stopped in front of a huge mansion. The porch alone was bigger than the whole property that she lived on in town. Her jaw dropped as she stepped out of the car. Had she died out there in the forest? There was no way that two sexy alpha males were wanting to take her as their mate as well as being stupid rich. No way. There had to be some sort of catch.
"I'll show you to your room," Gabriel said, offering her his arm.
"And I'll show you a good time."
Nathan grabbed her hips and ground against her, the motion sending zings through her body. It shocked her so much that she actually started pushing her ass back against him when Gabriel's fist flew out of nowhere. It hit Nathan hard in the jaw. The wolf spun and dropped. He groaned before laughing weakly.
"Asshole," Gabriel grunted. He ran a hand through his hair. "Sorry about that. I'll take you to your room now."
Tanya was silent as she glanced back. Nathan gave her a wink. Her pulse fluttered and she swallowed dryly. Yes, she had to get herself out of this soon, before she did something stupid… like break down and sleep with them.
Chapter Two
Gabriel
Tanya was overwhelmed and frightened. Gabriel hung up his cellphone, grinning. The situation was less than ideal, what with a human entering the stones before a she-wolf could. Now if he had any chance at winning her, he would have to use all his charm, be patient and understanding.
And of course, calling in the Calvary to help Tanya see Nathan for what he was as well as giving her some comfort would only do him good. Women seemed to be easily blinded by his false charm. Especially in this situation, Gabriel would have to be twice the man his rival was.
Speak of the devil… Nathan stormed past him, carrying a tray of the dinner he'd had cooked by his personal chef–apparently Gabriel's wasn't up to his standard. The other alpha zeroed in on the cellphone in Gabriel's hand and narrowed his eyes.
"What are you doing?" he snapped. "We agreed to settle this through human courtship rituals. If you're calling in the council to—"
"I'm not calling the council. I have no desire for them to stick their wrinkled noses in my love life." Gabriel shoved the phone into his pocket. "And what about you? Does Tanya not like…" He took a deep sniff. "Roast duck on a bed of wild rice with a mushroom gravy? Maybe she's more of a hamburger type of girl."
Nathan scowled. "I already tried that. She won't open her door, not even for food."
Gabriel had to laugh at that. The only reason Nathan wanted her to open her door was so that he could get her into bed. He knew the other male well.
The two of them had grown up around each other, and for a while in their younger years, Gabriel even considered Nathan a friend. Until the incident with Olivia. Now Gabriel wanted nothing more than to see Nathan brought to his knees. Not that he would use Tanya to do that. She would choose, and he would respect that choice.
"Go ahead and laugh." Nathan shook his head. "If she won't let me go to her, I'll break down her door and drag her to the kitchen. She has to eat."
r /> That stopped his amusement. Gabriel's hands curled into fists. "You will not drag her anywhere. I won't allow you to ruin my chances by being a pig-headed idiot and scaring her off!"
"Your chances? What chances do you have?"
Don't rise to his bait. Gabriel forced himself to unclench his hands. If he was going to win Tanya's affections in two months, then he had to prove himself to be the bigger man. None of this lowering himself to the other male's level. Nathan wasn't above playing dirty, lying and cheating his way to get what he wanted. After what happened to his father, it was clear to everybody that he would do whatever he wanted to get what he wanted.
"Tanya will decide between the two of us," Gabriel said. "And the only way I don't have a chance is if you scare her so badly she ends up thinking all wolves are of your ilk."
The other alpha yawned and popped a slice of duck into his mouth. "Riiiiiight," he drew the word out, sarcasm dripping from every letter. "Because you've had such great luck with women already. Me, I've got the experience. I know what women like and I'm going to give it all to her. I'm well on my way already. Preparing her meals, expressing concern for her well-being… oh, and we're going to get a truck later on tonight. Roses and chocolate. All for her. And what do you have to offer her? Only your money and experience with, what, two girls?"
A hot feeling rose in his chest and clouded his brain. "I cherish every woman I'm with, something you have no experience with."
"Whatever."
"And you think roses and chocolates will win you her favor? When she's already frightened and confused?"
Nathan yawned. "You have something better that you're going to give her?"
It was Gabriel's turn to smirk. "Yes, I do. I just got off the phone with Olivia." The arrogant expression on the other Alpha's face disappeared. Gabriel felt a surge of triumph and he barely resisted pumping his fist into the air in victory. "She's coming to stay with us. So yeah. Female companionship, someone she can talk to and be friends with, without the pressure of having to mate them on the full moon… I'd say that's better than roses."
