Cailleach (CAL-yak) The Goddess in her winter or crone guise, literally meaning ‘old woman.’
clarted up Covered in mud.
cysgod-cerddwr (CUS-god CER-thor) Shadow-walker.
ewe lamb A female sheep under a year old.
Howay A traditional Northumberland greeting.
Imbolc A Celtic festival of birth and new beginnings celebrated on February 1, now called St. Bride’s Day or Candlemas.
Orion A constellation depicted as a huntsman in many cultures.
otherworld The world bordering our own, the destination of all souls after death and the home of spiritual or supernatural entities.
Pennaeth (PEN-yth) Leader or headman.
pipit A moorland songbird.
quern A set of stones for grinding grain.
rum ’un A sly or roguish person.
Samhain (SA-wen) A Celtic festival held on November 1 marking the start of winter and the day when the barriers between this world and the otherworld weaken, now called All Souls’ Day or Halloween.
