Cold Cat Mountain: The Peak (Cold Cat Mountain Trilogy Book 1) Page 22

by Kimberly Goss-Kearney

When Blaze was within close proximity she inquired quietly if they had any medical personnel on hand to take a look at Matilda. Dazed, Matilda allowed herself to be led to a low standing cot. She sat down listlessly, staring out the open door of the hangar.

Dusty and an EMT took a look at her vitals and stood back, speaking softly to Blaze about their concerns. Matilda felt herself being wrapped in a blanket. Just beyond her the trees swayed in the wind, beckoning. The cold chill of the air scented with pine relieved her aggravation and stress as she was lulled into a sense of safety, calm. Inhaling deeply she stood. The crisp chill of the air played at the ends of her hair and she blinked, feeling a longing stir deep within. Somewhere a small voice in the back in her mind suggested she should be considering the recent crisis, the abduction of Skid, but she couldn’t summon the will to experience fear from the situation. From the corner of her eye she watched as Blaze and the EMT’s huddled around a cell phone, discussing Matilda’s options. Their images began to shrink inside a tunnel that expanded and widened, compelling her forward, toward the trees.

Stopping, she fought the pull and tug that seemed to have overridden her sense of reason. She stepped back once, reaching for Blaze, reaching for her hand to help ground her in the moment. Blaze, unaware, stepped closer to Dusty and Gordon, just beyond Matilda’s reach, whose heart beat loudly in her ears, her breathing slowed. She walked forward, unnoticed, through the large open doors of the hangar, and into the night. Turning once more her eyes caught and held Blaze’s in a confused moment. Somewhere in the back of her mind Matilda heard Blaze scream.

Blaze screamed hoarsely from the back of her throat as she turned and watched Matilda advance toward the dark trees just outside the hangar doors.

Matilda paused once, with a sorrowful look of longing, and stepped quietly into the trees.

In a single moment she was gone.
