Brice released his grip on her hair, casting a sardonic look at Horn over her head before giving her a chaste kiss on the forehead. “Later,” he mouthed for her ears only.
“Pleasure to see you as well, Horn,” quipped Brice.
“The pleasure is entirely yours, I assure you,” he snapped back.
“Mr. Notorious Gunfighter, you promised to behave,” chastised a smiling Emma as she emerged from the small ranch house.
Grabbing her around the waist, Horn captured Emma’s mouth in a quick kiss. “Now why would I want to do that when Mrs. Notorious Gunfighter likes it so much better when I don’t?” He laughed, giving her a saucy wink.
“Under the circumstance, we all have to stop misbehaving,” insisted Mason as he appeared on the porch. He was holding several tin cups by the handle in one hand, a jug of Sweetbrier Applejack Whiskey in the other. “We have to start acting respectable and all that shit.”
“How is she?” asked Michaela eagerly.
Mason’s eyes sparkled with pride. “Calico? Full of horns and rattles as usual.” He circled the group offering them a cup and a swig.
Annabelle walked out of the cabin looking as beautiful as ever, carrying a small bundle held protectively in her arms. The whole group instantly closed around her, greeting both mother and child with a chorus of ohs and ahs.
Giving a delighted giggle when the baby closed his little fist around her finger, Michaela asked, “What are you naming him?”
“Well, with your permission, we would like to name him Brandon Jackson Weiser,” said Annabelle.
Horn clapped Mason on the shoulder, tossing him a wide grin. Michaela felt Brice’s arm wrap protectively around her waist as she swiped at a tear.
“I think that sounds wonderful,” responded Michaela, her voice slightly husky with emotion.
Horn raised his cup. “To Brandon. A fine soldier and an even better friend and brother.”
“To Brandon,” cheered the group.
Mason threw back his shoulders as he grabbed his belt buckle. “Well, gents. I’ve proven I’m a man,” he crowed with a nod to the baby wriggling in Annabelle’s arms. “When are you two going to get crackin?”
Annabelle and Emma immediately protested the sheer arrogance of his statement.
Michaela, on the other hand, remained quiet as she shared a secret smile with Brice.
