“I had not decided yet.” He looked at her pleadingly. “I had to tell you Camille. I wanted there to be honesty between us.”
“You expect me to applaud you for that?” she asked him scornfully, her body trembling. “You lied to me and used me to get close to my best friend and tell me in the same breath that you love me. How do you expect me to feel?”
“I am sorry,”
“Not good enough Leighton.” She fell back against the sofa, feeling the weariness invading her entire body. “I want you to leave.”
“We can work this out,” he said desperately as he came and dropped to his knees before her.
“Are you out of your mind?” she cried pushing him away from her. “I can’t even look at you right now. Please leave.”
He got to his feet and stood there in the center of the room. “I am asking you to give us another chance,” he told her quietly. “I spent my early years in group homes when they separated us and two years ago I decided to look for my sister and I found her. We suffered Camille and I was pissed when they fired her and she ended back into a group home.”
“She caused it on herself.”
“I know that now. I am just asking you to find it in your heart to forgive me for the way I had been thinking.”
“I just need to do some thinking on my own. I am asking you to leave.”
*****
“You were right and I am asking myself why I never saw that he had an ulterior motive,” Camille said bitterly as she stood by the window looking out on the snow covered grounds. She had cried and raged and had cried some more and had ignored his calls before deciding what to do. She had called Monique and told her a little bit about Leighton and had asked her if she could come over and had done so. It was mid-afternoon and Lorenzo was at the offices as well as Bernardo and Adele were out at a charity function.
“I did not want to be right honey. But I am puzzled. Why did he tell you?”
“Because he claimed he could not go through with it.” She clasped her hands before her as if in prayer and felt the weakness invading her body. She still loved him, damn him to hell! “He said he fell in love with me and I apparently changed him for the better. Whoopee for me!” she said bitterly.
They were in the sitting room across from the nursery where the children were sleeping peacefully. Lorenzo and his mother had interviewed several nannies and had finally chosen two to help take care of the children. They were almost a month old and Monique was not sure she could leave them.
“Honey, I want to tell you that I agree with you in telling him to leave, but I have a feeling he is telling the truth. Why else would he confess?”
“You are taking up for him?” Camille turned to look at her incredulously. “You were the one who warned me about him in the first place.”
“And I was right then,” Monique said soothingly. “But the fact that he came clean to you has to count for something. Love makes us do things we never normally do,” she said with a whimsical smile. “People change and I can attest to that.”
“Your husband is no longer a playboy, big deal. I am talking about a man who used me to get to you guys. How can I trust him again?”
“You are miserable without him,” Monique pointed out. “I have never seen you so broken up over a man before and I have known you for a very long time. I have talked to Lorenzo about it and after he stopped being angry I told him that I wanted to help her.”
“The same woman who could have caused your death you want to help her?”
“Yes. She had no idea what she was doing and she did it for love. We do strange things for love and I don’t think she should be condemned for that.”
Camille stared at her and shook her head. “You are an incurable romantic. What did Lorenzo say?”
“He said I should make sure I do not get too involved.” She shrugged her shoulders. “I have so much right now, more than I can ever manage. What is it going to take out of me to help someone who needs it? The group home where she is staying is dilapidated and in need of so many things. I have also called in the wives to solicit their help. Kelsey is away in Japan for a week but is asking her husband to chip in on her behalf. They are really good people Camille and they are doing their best to make the world a better place. Call him and talk to him before you throw away something wonderful.”
*******
“Mrs. Romano, how does it feel to be the person who made all this happen?” a reporter asked her. It was spring and the air smelled clean and fresh after the rain. The group home had been refurbished and looked brand new. Rooms had been added along with several recreational areas. Doctors had been solicited to become a part of the whole thing.
“I am afraid I cannot take all the credit,” she said with her quiet calm smile. She was wearing one of the new spring outfits with the Romano brand stamped inside. It was a floral jumper with thin straps and was showcased in the local department stores. The press had called her the woman who was not afraid to go local. “All of my friends have chipped to make it work.” She gestured to the rest of women who were gathered around, some seeing to the needs of the people there. Leesa was holding court with some of the elderly men sitting around a table having afternoon tea.
“What’s next?” the reporter asked her.
“More projects like these. We are nothing if we are not giving back to society and I intend to do just that.”
She moved away before the reporter could ask more questions and went to find Camille and Leighton who were helping to serve the afternoon meals. They had talked and decided to work things out. They were planning on getting married in the summer. Linda had moved out into an apartment that had been given to her by the wives and she was working at an advertising agency. “I owe you everything,” Leighton told her gratefully as he put away his tray.
“You can pay me back by keeping my best friend happy.”
*****
“How about going back to the hotel where we first met?” Lorenzo asked her softly as he took off the champagne silk she had put on when she went into the nursery to see to the kids. “I would love that!” her eyes glowed as she ran her hands over his smooth muscled chest. She had told him she wanted more children and he told her that the two they had right now were quite enough but she secretly wanted to get pregnant. She enjoyed being a mother and a wife and knew she had been born for it. “When?” her concentration was drifting away as his mouth touched her neck.
“Next weekend.” He had reached the hollow of her throat and his tongue touched her there and lingered. They had started making love as soon as she was able and found that the passion between them had heightened. Their children were photographed whenever they were out in the public.
“Yes,” she moaned as he drifted to her breasts, his tongue touching her sensitive nipple. She was still breastfeeding even though the twins had turned four months but she enjoyed doing so.
“Good,” he raised his head to look at her. “I will make the arrangements.” He reached between her legs and opened them, his fingers reaching inside to touch her wetness.
“Lorenzo,” she was ravenous for him and felt as if she was burning up with a fever that could only be quenched by him.
“Patience,” he told her huskily. He did not have time for foreplay so great was the need. He rubbed the tip of his penis with the moisture from her and inched his way into her tightness. It did not matter how many times they made love! Whenever he entered her it was always the same knee jerk reaction for him as he went deeper into her. She wrapped her legs around his waist and lifted her hips to meet his thrusts. He bent his head and ran his tongue over her full bottom lip. Monique moaned and dug her fingers into his muscled back. This gorgeous man was her husband and the father of her children and she could not fathom it! He captured her lip between his teeth and set her off! He felt the tension inside her body and eased out a little wanting to prolong the moment before the orgasm took over but she was having none of that as she dug her heels into his firm butt an
d forced him to remain inside her. She cried out his name, her body arched as she gave in to the delicious pleasure of his being inside her. He switched position while she was in the throes of ecstasy and settled her on top of him holding her hips steady as he thrust upwards. Monique curled her fingers on his chest and grinded her hips against him, her moans echoing around the elegantly furnished room. She was not shy or contained around him! He had taken that away from her and replaced it with a passion that overrides everything else. She gave him everything in her not ashamed to show him how much she loved him!

“I cannot believe we are in the kitchen at this hour scourging for food.” Monique said as her husband took out the leftover lasagna and put it to heat before getting out two plates to share the meal.
“Two bouts of incredible lovemaking make one hungry,” he told her with a grin as he leaned over and kissed her full on the lips. She could not believe this was the same moody and taciturn man she had met more than a year ago. He had changed so much.
“True,” she agreed as he passed her the plate. “How about some juice?”
“I am invading the chef’s kitchen and he hates when we do that.”
“I will tell him it’s me. He likes me.” She said smugly.
“Who doesn’t?” he asked tenderly as he looked at her. “You are one terrific woman.”
“Thanks,” she murmured.
“Stop looking at me like that or else,” he warned.
“Or else what?” she asked him seductively.
“Or else this,” he scooped her into his arms and kissed her roughly.
“I like the ‘or else’” she told him shakily.
“You do huh?’ Lorenzo could feel himself hardening again. “Let’s go upstairs and eat there.” He suggested.
“Good idea.” With a contented smile Monique wrapped her arms around his neck; totally in love with her husband!

“Mom, I cannot discuss that with you right now. I have several deliveries to make and the van has been giving me hell since yesterday.” Janice rummaged through her closet to find something suitable to wear to work. Nothing in her closet looked even remotely like something she wanted to wear. She was supposed to go shopping with her two best friends Leah and Candace, but that had not happened yet.
“You are breaking your mother’s heart, honey,” Janet complained.
“Mom, what do you care that Dad is getting married to some bimbo? I thought you were over him ages ago.”
“I am sweetie, it is just the principle of the thing. He is getting married to the bimbo just to spite me.”
“I strongly doubt that.” She pulled out a long floral dress and gave it a frowning look. It will have to do. She could team it with a white jacket. It was spring and the weather was a little on the cold side. “You have been dating since you and Dad have been divorced and that has been over five years now.”
“Yes honey, but you are providing flowers to the competition.”
“I am providing flowers to a paying customer and I have no problem doing that,” Janice corrected her. She was tired of being caught in the middle of her parents’ ongoing arguments and drama, and she wished they would keep her out of it.
“I saw them the other day at the supermarket and she was clinging to his arms like a love-struck kitten, it made me sick to look at them.”
“Mom, you need to move on and I thought you had. You keep telling me that, but it seems to me that you are still hanging on to something that has been dead for years.” Janice stared at herself in the mirror critically. She looked more like her father than her mother. She had gotten his amazing dark brown eyes and h
is mouth, but she had inherited her mother’s strong black curls that framed her oval face beautifully. Her mouth was all her own, full and generous and needed no artifice.
“We were married for twenty years honey, which has to count for something. I am surprised you are taking it so well,” her mother complained.
“You guys were very unhappy long before the divorce and I noticed that. So I think the best thing to do is be apart. If it does not work, then it’s time to let go,” Janice said practically. “Tell you what, I will be around there this weekend and you can bitch about Dad the entire time. How about that?”
“Okay, talk to you later,” she said with a sniff. “I think I hear Maud calling from next door. Bye honey.”
Her parents had separated five years ago when she was still in college doing her horticultural degree, but she had seen it coming. Each weekend, she had come home to find that the silences between them were getting more and more, and although they had tried to keep it together when she was there, it was very apparent. Her mother had accused her father of cheating on her and he had accused her of being cold and distant. So they had parted and he had left the house to her and gone to live in an apartment. He had called her a month ago and told her he had met someone and was planning on getting married. “Have you told Mom?” she had asked him.
“I was thinking you would,” he told her with a laugh.
“Are you serious, Dad?” she had asked him in exasperation. “You and Mom need to sort this thing out between you.”
“You know how crazy your mother gets, sweetie. As soon as we start talking, she starts arguing and I cannot deal with that,” he protested. She had never held any resentment towards him because he was a very good father and always treated her with love and respect. They had a standing lunch engagement every Thursday afternoon, and no matter what happened, he always made it.
