“So Kayla is pregnant and that is why they are getting married?” another person asked.
“Seriously? That’s a ridiculous comment in this day and age. Not only that? This is Amore Island. We are Bonds. They are getting married because they love each other. Proof of that love is my first grandchild.”
“Was this a planned pregnancy?” another person asked.
Hunter stepped forward at this point. His father had said enough. He’d said a lot of the right things and Hunter was proud it was done with a smile on his father’s normally stoic face.
“Not everything in life is planned,” Hunter said. “As my father said, I’m a Bond. I live on Amore Island. Love found me, or I found love. It all has the same ending in the eyes of myself and my family, my future family. Now unless you’ve got any more questions on the Retreat, we are finished here.”
His father and he walked away and went back to their offices. Kayla hadn’t wanted to be in the lobby where she would be seen and risk having her face on the news, but she was in a room above where the interview was done outside and had the window open. Hunter knew she heard everything.
He could also imagine she gasped a few times by the comments, but since his father was truly coming around and they’d had another family dinner, this one where he openly talked about his grandchild, he figured she’d let it slide.
“Do you really think it will be over with now?” she asked when he walked into his office where Kayla was now waiting.
“I’m sure your mother will back off when she reads the lawsuit. She can’t afford a lawyer to defend her words and she knows it.”
“I still am so sorry this all happened to you and your family.”
“I’m more sorry of the bad reputation Great-great-grandfather James had, but I can’t change my bloodlines any more than you.”
“No, we can’t.”
“I wonder if she will stay away. I’ve got a half brother and sister out there.”
“Do you want to get to know them?” he asked.
“I don’t know.”
“If you decide to, I’ll be there every step of the way with you. And I’ll make sure they can’t hurt you or our family. I believe in what I said. You think a black cloud or trouble follows you everywhere. It brought you here to me. That’s love and that’s how I’m going to look at it today, and tomorrow, and fifty years from now.”
“Fifty years?” she asked, hugging him and laying her head on his chest.
His hand came up and fingered the necklace she was wearing. “Be glad I didn’t say fifty years and five kids from now. I could make a wish on it like you do so much on this necklace.”
“Not happening. Not five kids,” she said. “Two. Maybe three. But that’s my limit.”
“Regardless of the number we’ll make our own family. We don’t need anyone but each other.”
“But I’m coming to love your family as much as you do.”
Epilogue
“Are you ready to find out the sex of your baby?” Dr. Mills asked Kayla. Hunter was by her side. The first time he’s come into the office and she finds out he’s related to her doctor. She’d have to get used to this. That once she and Hunter were married, she’d probably be related to half the island.
“We are,” she said.
“Hoping for a boy, Hunter?” Dr. Mills asked.
“I’m good with whatever is in there as long as it’s healthy.”
“Good answer,” Dr. Mills said. “Let’s just do your exam first and then you can go down to the lower level for the ultrasound.”
“Exam,” Kayla said. “My bladder can’t take an exam. It’s so full.”
Dr. Mills laughed. “Not an internal one. I just want to hear the heartbeat, let Hunter hear it too, and make sure everything else is fine. Looks like your vitals are doing well and you’ve gained three pounds.”
“It’s probably the two bottles of water I drank this morning that I’m not allowed to let out.” Hunter laughed. “Sorry, that was kind of crude and gross. You don’t want to think of that.”
He shook his head. “So you need to pee. Who cares?”
“I keep telling her having a baby is messy business. She better get over it,” Dr. Mills said.
A few minutes later she and Hunter were on the way for the ultrasound. “It hurts my bladder to walk,” she said. “I have to go to the bathroom so bad but they said I can’t until the ultrasound is done. I’m afraid I might when they press on me to find the baby.”
“Then you do,” he said.
“No. That can’t happen.” Talk about mortification.
“I know you need to go to the bathroom,” the tech said. “Let me get some images and then you can go let some out.”
“Some? Once I start, it’s all coming out.” What a stupid thing to suggest.
“Then let’s find out if you’re having a boy or a girl,” the tech said. “Lie back and lift your shirt. Tuck this towel under the waist of your pants. I’m going to put some gel on this, but don’t worry, it’s warm.”
Kayla lay back, her heart racing she was so excited to find out. Hunter’s leg was shaking on the floor next to her. She reached over and grabbed his hand while the tech started to move around her belly.
“We can see the head, look at the nose.”
“That’s amazing,” Kayla said. “It’s so detailed.”
“It really is. But I’m sure you’re dying to know the sex, so let’s see if we can get the baby to open their legs and then I’ll get the rest of the pictures.”
She lay there and fought back the wince when the tech was pressing on her. “Should it hurt like that?”
“Sorry,” the tech said. “I’m just trying to get the baby to move. Looks like it’s naptime. Ah, there we go. Just a bit more. And there you are. Do you know what that is?”
“That’s a Bond,” Hunter said. “Just like his father.”
Kayla looked over and laughed. Hunter had tears in his eyes. She did too. There on the screen was the next in line for the Retreat. The next generation of Bonds.
Family, it’s what ties them all together.
