“Woha, woha woha, you’re saying that your parents were going to make a deal with my dad… for what? Me?” He was getting dangerously close to the truth and I hoped he wouldn’t guess it.
“You… why do my parents want you?” he narrowed his eyes suspiciously at me.
“My sweet, sweet stache…” I put my finger up to my lip and laughed nervously.
His face contorted and it looked as if a light bulb went off in his head.
“You’re… No… You’re not… Are you?” What a poop hole…
“Oh COME ON!” I stopped my foot down in anger and knocked down a broom before I stormed out. He wouldn’t get a direct answer from me. There was no way.
6:04 pm
It’s been a little while. But rest assured there is a decent reason for that. You see, I had a little chat with my father that has sent me running around freaking out like a mad woman because apparently I am nowhere near as safe as I thought I was.
We talked about his little deal and since Seth knows that I am not exactly normal he felt the need to inform my father that he knew that fact and that we had discussed it that night at the park.
My dad freaked.
It went a little something like this…
“Dia, I am going to ask you something and I want an honest answer. None of this beating around the bush stuff. When did you and Seth discuss your… abilities and this deal?” He gave me one of those looks like he was staring into my soul daring me to lie to him.
“Uh… we talked about it the other night. He told me that he knew everything but dad… I don’t think he intends to do much. I think he’s been… looking out for me.” This sudden realization hit me and completely weirded me out.
“He is NOT looking out for you. This is a game; all of it is a game to him!” My dad took me by the shoulders.
Why is everyone acting so weird?!
Freaking parents… keep me in the dark. I barely know what I am yet no one will tell me anything just to practice my powers. They’re probably going to regret that later.
“How is it a game? I don’t really see how it works.” I said rather quietly.
“He intends to use you for something else! Just like those vampires would have!” My dad cried he was hysterical for some reason. I bet it was probably the fact that he sold his daughter’s soul to a demon!
“Vampires…? Dad what did you do?” I gulped knowing this couldn’t end well.
“I didn’t do anything! It’s too late now, they know.” He let go of my shoulder and took a step back.
“Who knows what? Dad, what’s going on?” I asked him. No one was telling me anything.
“They know everything. They know about Seth, they know about you and I don’t know how to reverse it.” He was panicking which was never good in these situations.
“You probably should calm down…” I tested but of course when does that ever work?
“I cannot calm down. There is too much at stake here.” He cried.
“Just tell me what’s going on… Really…” This was starting to get annoying but I didn’t say that in fear of getting grounded.
“It’s better if you didn’t know.”
Ok, so I snapped a little bit…
“Wait, wait, wait, wait… You know what happens in just about any story or even movie where the parents don’t tell the daughter the whole truth to ‘protect’ her?” I asked with a little attitude.
“We don’t have time for this.” He said back still panicked.
I kept on going anyways, “She always finds out the hard way, which means that I am either going to get hurt or someone else is, you better hope that it isn’t physically either.” I growled.
He didn’t respond only started pacing, ready to bolt at any second.
“Dad… Don’t take this the wrong way but you’re such a d-bag.” I said slowly.
“It is a game to all of them!” my father looked pained before he turned around and took off out the door. What in the world just happened?
I haven’t seen him since but I have seen a multitude of people who I could imagine knew something was going on.
I wasn’t sure where to begin. Who did my dad have relations with that he would have reason to tell them what I am? What kind of vampires were they?
I knew the answer to those questions but I didn’t want it to be true because if it was it would mean talking to Niklas of my own volition which was not something I wanted to do.
Also, I think my dad drank too much cool-aid… I’m just saying.
Chapter 13: Butter Knife Tension
Sunday September 9th, 2012
4:52pm
I am what a normal person would call a telepath that is, if they didn’t know any better. But I can do things you would never expect… ok, you might expect them but because of this and the rarity of my talents I guess you could say that I am a highly sought after commodity.
Not only can I read minds but I can control them, I can control you. What you do, what you say… I can control your movements. I can make you see or not see things, hear or not hear things. I can slip into your memories and erase them or I can add new ones.
I can stop your heart from beating, your lungs from breathing.
I can do all of this stuff with one look and I kind of hate it. I never use any of these things. Maybe I read minds from time to time but I try to leave the rest a lone. I really don’t want to know the stupid stuff people think or do. And I really don’t want to know all creepy things you do. Really, you can keep it to yourself.
I guess you can see why I would keep it a secret. If people knew, if demons and vampires knew… I shudder to think. I wouldn’t know who was friend and who was foe. And usually these kinds of people know how to shield their thoughts from people like me.
I’m sure that if I was different, not so weird and opinionated, I would probably use these things to my advantage. Maybe one day I would get strong enough to control more than one person. (Which is like scary dangerous by the way.)
Enough of my complaining…
Niklas figured it out. I must be terrible at keeping secrets and I must be totally screwed because my soul was sold to a demon and some vampire figured out my secret annnnnndddd I just found out his parents have something to do with this.
Life is awesome.
And slightly complicated.
When Niklas managed to find me after school that day he pretty much followed me home, which is super stalker-y by the way. I can’t stress how much the dude creeps me out sometimes. But luckily for me my parents were not home so there was no one there to witness the strangeness that is the interaction between Niklas and me.
“Dia.” Niklas called to me. I attempted to open the door before he got to me but he’s a vampire so that wasn’t going to happen.
“Niklas…” I muttered and inserted the key into the door.
“Look, I want to know what my parents are up to. And I think you need to know what they’re up to before it’s too late.” Niklas stepped in through the door behind me and I almost cursed. He’s a vampire, I should know better.
How did he even know that his parents were up to something. I should have asked him but instead I asked, “and how, pray tell, are we going to do that?” I crossed my arms over my chest as we stood in the living room.
“I think I know a way…” He smirked at me. I did not have to read his mind to know what he was thinking.
“Oh no… no no no.” I shook my head frantically. He was beginning to be a real pain in my ass.
“Look I’m not sure there is another way around it besides waiting. If we wait then it will be too late and who knows what will happen then.” I wished Niklas wasn’t here that my dad had never made that stupid deal and everything was normal.
But I wasn’t a genie so nothing happened.
“And my parents have a lot of thing up their sleeves… Who knows if they have… one of those soul sucker types.” He was referring to people who stole powers. The suck your soul from yo
ur body and thereby gain your powers.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they had someone like that working for them. They were rich vampy-pants after all.
“Niklas… don’t make me do it.” I whined
“Look, we both want answers and now that we both know what you can do, I’m allowing you to do it. Just trust me.” His re assurance wasn’t very reassuring. I wasn’t buying it. He was Niklas the stalker after all… (Which is now officially his title.)
“Trust you! I don’t even like vampires and here you want me to infiltrate your body so I can infiltrate you home and interrogate people we’re not even sure will give us answers!” I clenched my fists at my sides in attempts to keep from smacking his ass… but not literally.
“It’s not like we’re going to find out any other way…” Niklas gave me a look that I decided would be best ignored.
“Are you stupid? We have Seth. I’m sure he knows everything by now!” I poked him hard in the chest but I am sure he wasn’t fazed by it.
“That prick? Where is he now hm…? How are we supposed to get information out of someone we can’t even find?” He took a step forward and was now too close for my comfort.
I crossed my arms, “I can summon him… you know, with this.” I pointed to my head, making sure I gave him a look that told him I thought he was stupid.
“Whatever, if you’re going to do it, just do it.” He huffed, defeated.
“Fine.”
“Fine!”
“I don’t just show up willy nilly.”A voice said from the door way stated scaring the crap out of me.
“OH my-“ I made some lovely scared sounds and failed to shut up before I could look anymore stupid than I already did.
Seth chuckled, “You rang?” k.1.2
“Not on purpose!” I guess it didn’t matter that I summoned him without summoning him because I meant to do it anyways. I really suck at this whole supernatural thing.
“But you did.” Seth smiled at me… well he smiled until he finally caught sight of Niklas, “What is this little turd doing here?”
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that?” Niklas narrowed his eyes at Seth and I thought I was going to have to run away from this potential cat fight… In my own home.
“She called me here, bro.” Seth glared at Niklas and I could see his fists clenched at his sides.
“Heeeeyyyy guys… how about we figure out what Niklas’s parents are up to, yeah?” I suggested with a cautious smile. Well I guess it wouldn’t ease the tension but it would change the subject!
“What makes you think I would know about those two?” Seth questioned bitterly.
“Because my dad was talking to them before he started making a deal with you… And- now he’s gone. He just left! And I don’t know what’s going on anymore.” I ran a hand through my hair frustrated I’m not sure why people do it because it doesn’t help.
Seth looked at me for a moment before he spoke, “Dia… Your dad’s not gone.” That was it. That was all he said.
“But if he’s not… then where is he?” I looked at him, not really wanting to know the answer.
No one said anything for a moment.
“What did they do to him?” I whispered. They could not be up to anything good. I could only hope he was ok.
“Dia, He sold your soul… doesn’t that mean anything to you?” Seth whispered taking me by the shoulders gently.
“He SOLD her soul?” Niklas asked rather shocked. I guess he didn’t approve.
“He’s still my dad right?” Again with the silence, it was getting annoying. What’s going on?
“Look, it doesn’t matter. We’ll figure something out. I’ll figure something out.” I took a step back from Seth and looked out the window. “In the meantime let’s find out what the hell is going on with Niklas’s parents before I get kidnapped… or worse.” Like my dad.
I wouldn’t think of this… of him. He was probably dead but I didn’t need to know that. Not now, not when there’s a threat looming so close by. I just had to forget about it. Yeah…
“So, where do we begin?” Niklas asked politely avoiding the daddy questions. I gulped.
Seth examined me for a moment, I couldn’t tell if he was concerned or not but that was probably because I wasn’t looking directly at him. “I know just the place…”
Chapter 14: What the hell…?
September 12, 2012
Noon
About four days ago I found myself back at school under Seth’s guidance. He said if I was going to pretend to be human I had to do it all the way… and go back to school. Not only that but I had to eves drop into people’s heads… listening to everyone’s idiotic thoughts.
Which is a huge ass head ache.
People like to think loudly especially humans. Some people go stealth mode and block their thoughts while others are like HEY I’M THINKING THE DUMBEST THINGS EVER!
The ones who might have known anything were the ones I couldn’t hear. They were really good at evading my powers which made everything a whole hell of a lot worse.
I wanted to punch myself in the head as soon as I walked into school where everyone was crowded. There was so much random nonsense that was hard to sift through.
I really did not care about Julie’s boyfriend or Tyler’s girl problems. What made all of it worse was the approach of the prissy squad. I mean… princess squad.
I was able to duck through the crowd but they were vampires; they were easily able to follow me. I think stalking is a vampire thing.
They cornered me in a less crowded hall way. I felt like we should be in some sort of movie fighting over territory. You know some sort of teen drama or whatever. Perhaps we should have been in a Mean Girls sequel. After all the mean girls usually fight over guys and… stuff. Well I guess I could call prissy squad leader ugly or something to rile her up…
“Hey pizza face.” I smirked at her as I said it. They were so fun to make angry.
“You ratty little human.” She pushed me into the locker.
“Ha ha! You’re so fantastic at come backs.” My sarcasm will be my down fall. “I’m hurt; I’m going to die in a corner now.”
“I thought I told you to stay away from Niklas.” She practically growled which did nothing to wipe the smile off my face. A vampire pretending to be a werewolf, how cute!
“I can stay away from him all I want. Doesn’t mean I can keep him away from me.” I crossed my arms over my chest.
“We saw you two on Friday.” Prissy face was not happy.
“Ah, well you also saw me ditching him then.” I shrugged nonchalantly.
“No one ditches Niklas.” I swear if looks could kill I would be dead… deader than dirt.
“I do… other people probably do. I bet his parents ditch him before they drop him off for school.” I joked.
Why did she bring his parents up? It was just a joke right? I could hear one of the prissy squad thinking. I could swear that I knew that voice.
“Just like your dad ditched you?” One of the prissy squad responded.
“Just like you nose is going to ditch your face in a second here.” I threatened. I cracked my knuckles. Settling things the human way is actually fun.
“Oh ho ho, I think we’ve hit a sensitive spot ladies.” Prissy leader said. I tried not to hit her to be honest but it wasn’t working.
“Let’s leave the parents out of this; they wouldn’t want to know about our shenanigans would they?” I clenched my teeth.
Screw it.
She doesn’t know what they really want. I tried not to act startled at Jade’s thought and punch the prissy squad leader in the face. At the same time I managed to erase her memory of it.
I grabbed Jade by the arm and dragged her away from the group. I searched her thoughts for a moment before deciding it would be better just to ask her what she knew. I dragged her into an empty class room that I hoped would stay empty for first period so that there was no chance of interruption.
“Wh
at do you know about me?” I looked at her suspiciously. Jade had never been a good liar but for all I knew turning into a vampire could have changed that.
“What are you talking about Dia? We’ve known each other for years.” She looked at me confused.
“There’s something off here. Why did you become a vampire?” Her response would determine everything. If she didn’t tell me anything I would look for myself but if she did…
